I would say the Arab world has contributed but Islam has not.

When the second Muslim Caliph, Omar ibn el Khattab, had been consulted about the Alexandria library he replied "If what in those books are in the Koran, well we have it, and if what is in it not in the Koran, we don't need to know it". The result was the burning down of that edifice to the ground. Saving that library would have contributed more to human knowledge than all the purported contribution of Muslim scientists throughout the ages.

My humble proposal is that Drew and ANON take up the crusade where daniel Pearl's widow left it. Surely that is a far worthier way to pursue their selfless militancy against extremism than writing on a WAPO forum.

The last place to look for the truth is in ancient books of religion.There may be wisdom in old books like the Bible and the Koran,but truth is another matter. If you want truth,read books about truth,or about the search for truth by great thinkers, philosophers and scientists.
Read Steven Pinker for example,or Bertrand Russell.

The greatest mistake of all,is to regard ancient texts as literal truths.The religious scholar,Karen Armstrong,writes that the ancients made a clear distinction between mythos and logos,and believed that chaos could occur when a culture confused one for the other.
Actually it's very exciting and liberating to realize that God isn't real;that the truth of 'the mystery of universe' is out there somewhere waiting to be perceived and understood,if that is at all possible.
To conclude that a god is responsible for all this,is a conclusion a child might reach,having absolutely no clue about any other possibilities.
Our ancestors really didn't have a clue.

"Failed" Islamic countries, nothing like an ignorant & prejudiced frozen "snapshot" view of history. India & China are rising again, one of the main IT companies in India is WIPRO founded by a Muslim. The Muslim countries are similar to "India" BUT are a fragmented, divided civilisation. Why are the Muslims divided, well a lot of the reason is deliberate Western intereference since the crushing blows upon a centralised state by the Crusaders & Mongols. The tribes with flags were set against one another as western-supported self-serving plutocracies i.e. neo-colonialism. The Muslim world has the twin misfortune of sitting upon the geo-strategic slap bang middle of the world's main trade routes at the intersection of 3 continents & of being the nominal owners of strategic resources e.g. OIL. A reading of history in context would help a narcissistic giant with the history of pygmy. The neo-Darwinist Military-Industrial Complex (MIC) is always fabricating expediently opportunistic casus belli for nosily INTERFERING in other nations. Why do Muslims live in the "West," many reasons just like everyone else. Imperial illiberalism abroad whilst relative liberalism at home. If the Muslims were allowed to carry on their lives WITHOUT interference, then perhaps we could concentrate our efforts on building up the socities instead of chucking out the invaders! Alright. This is the first I've heard of the squirrels being taken captive. I am really steamed! How can anyone do this to an innocent squirrel family? They were on vacation there.
