This WP form is an example of responsible media that allows Islamic experts to clarify and debate the issues, dispel the popular misconceptions about Islam and Muslims and ultimately bridge the gap. I would like to discuss one issue, Jihad-the aspect of “Suicide Bombings” or “Martyrdom missions”, depending on which side of the issue one stands.

The world renowned Islamic scholar and jurist Dr. Yousef Qaradawi is unequivocally main stream and falls within the definition of a Muslim by Quranic standards, namely that a Muslim is moderate by definition: the Quran says “We have created you a community of moderation…” Dr. Qaradawi is not therefore in the minority of Islamic jurists at all. Am interested to hear your opinion on the following reasoning behind his fatwa on martyrdom missions/or suicide bombings as I understand it and am not speaking on his behalf:

1// That Palestine is an occupied Arab Muslim land by a group of invaders-this time Jews-as it was invaded and occupied by the Crusaders (11th-13th century AD) who were ultimately evicted by Muslims; the conflict is strictly political and about the occupation of land and not in any way or shape against the Jews per se or their faith-as the case was with the German occupation of France in WW11 or the French occupation of Algeria 1832-1962;

2// The Quran rightfully sanctions defensive war against existential threat to any Muslim land or community and against those who evict Muslims from their homeland as is the case with millions of Palestinian refugees scattered in refugee camps who were evicted by Jewish terrorist gangs in 1947/8;

3// That Israel is armed to the teeth with the most sophisticated arsenal of modern conventional weapons backed by a formidable nuclear arsenal-compared to the dispossessed Palestinians who live under a brutal 60-year old military occupation in a state of Apartheid, starved, imprisoned or killed in their own homeland while the world looks on, in a state of human despair and desperation; with the Palestinians besieged from all directions in a big concentration camp called the West Bank/Gaza with meager or no weapons with which to defend their occupied land and families-resistance to occupation is legitimate and sanctioned by international law and by all religions and creeds;

Prof. Jackson, again, with all of the above do you think that Suicide bombings/Martyrdom missions specifically targeting Israeli regular and reserve army-excluding children and non-combatants-are sanctioned from an Islamic point of view?."

It is so heartening and encouraging to see the extreme efforts Washington Post (the genius idea of Sally Quinn and Jon Meacham to start this forum) is making to bring peace and understanding in the world by encouraging dialogue with Muslims and trying to incorporate the peace loving Muslims around the world into the family of all believers.

For eight years in India, until I finished my schooling, I attended a school which took great pains in inculculate a sense of national unity in us. As part of the school curriculum we learnt the verses of Kabir, a Sufi mystic, who was claimed by Hindus and Muslims alike as their own. We celebrated the religious holidays of the major religions in India. Such positive indoctrination worked wonders for me.

Then let me be the first to condemn the cartoon, the mouse, the people who produce it, Hamas, Hizbullah, the Jihadists, etc etc. I also don't do it needing to highlight any specific atrocities committed by Israel or the US, the world is witness to them. Neither does those atrocities committed give a muslim anywhere the right to kill innocent people or him or herself for that matter. This is diametrically opposed to the teachings of the religion all of which are easy to ascertain if that is the goal. However, if a regular muslim or a prominent scholar came on here to say that "Islam is Peace", then they are wrong. Islam means submission to God's rules, and God's laws. And part of God's rules and laws are how muslims must deal justly with EVERYone, regardless of religion or lack thereof.

In an authentic narration from the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, he said: "If one of you kills a non-Muslim unjustly (i.e. he's innocent, has committed no crime) under the protection of the muslim land, he would never smell the fragrance of paradise even though it's fragrance travels for 40 years." In the Quran, God says (paraphrasing) "if you kill one innocent person unjustly then its as if you have killed all of mankind, and if you save one innocent person it is as if you have saved all of mankind (this means in your reward with your Creator)."

So any of the verses that you think contradict this with regards to fighting, then you are mistaken, you have read only part of the verses or not all the verses in their context. The narration and verse that i mentioned above affectively preclude a muslim from ever being allowed to commit an act of atrocity. But as we are all well aware, not everyone follows the rules or they are lied to about what the rules are.

Furthermore, it's simply wrong to state that Islam teaches hatred for Jews. There are muslims who teach hatred for Jews, or people who call themselves that, there are christians who do it as well, but Islam as a religion, the Quran as a book and Muhammad as the Last Prophet, peace be upon him, do not teach hatred against Jews. I am a devout muslim and I don't hate Jews, i've been a muslim for 14 years and have never read a single thing that told me i should hate them. I am a white American, I wear the long white tunic to Walmart or the Mall (the ones you see worn if you see Saudi Arabia on the news), I have a beard you could get lost in, those are outward signs of course (and actually mean nothing about real piety in the religion) but to people they only understand the outward signs of anything they don't understand inwardly, its expected. But I don't hate Jews. Many Jews of their own volition become Muslims.

What is hated was the *actions* that various Jewish tribes at certain times in history took with regards to Prophets, peace be upon all of them, who were sent to them. Either they were reviled or they were killed and God punished those tribes for this. This is mentioned in the bible as well. You don't hate people, you hate what they do. And whether or not you hate what they do is contingent upon if what they are doing is hated by God.

Hamas is following a tradition in education that Wahabists in Saudi Arabia also have followed - creating a toxic anti-Semitic education system. The same pattern was evident in Nazi Germany. So repellant though the practice is, it is not unique to Hamas or to radical Muslim groups.

It is chilling to consider a possible stream of future suicide-bombers emerging from factory production schools. I can only hope that these Muslim children share the same low regard for their schoolwork that infects many American children. In this case they will have a better reason.

Someone to speak the truth with a real life example about what Islam is all about on this On Faith site after having to endure all that "Islam is peace" nonsense last week.

Islam teaches hatred towards all non-muslims, particularly Jews. The Hamas government's sponsored Farfour the Martyrmouse is living, undeniable proof of how deep this hatred goes, and it starts right there in the pages of the "Holy Koran". A hatred so deeply believed in that there is a felt need to teach that hatred to children so that they too can become "good peaceful muslims".

For the past week we have had to bear the incessant rantings of so called islamic scholars and "moderates". Many posters say they are saddened by the animosity shown towards these muslim scholars and ask "Can't we all just be nice to another?
