While Lent’s imperatives did not thunder, the occasional blinding hangover resonated loudly. It led me periodically to put aside alcohol long enough to prove I wasn’t hooked, and there was Lent as the cover.

Realitycheck, that must be how all evidence of this underground movement is lacking. There is much writing from the Church Jesus established and from the counterfeits such as the gnostics and arians.

The throws at the Italian Day parade in the French Quarter are appropriately subdued. They don't toss cups, beads, and trinkets. Just lucky beans, which look like oversized chili beans but are not.

I was never one for Lent, mainly because it was not a major event like Easter Sunday but like Easter it changed every year. To find Lent, you would have to locate the first Sunday after the first full moon after the first day of Spring -- and then count back six weeks. When I lived in New Orleans lent became easier to recognize because it always began the day after Mardi Gras.
I still didn't actually sacrifice anything for lent like alcohol or ice cream, but I occasionally questioned whether it was appropriate for New Orleans to celebrate Mardi Gras and then also celebrate the Feast of St. Joseph too, which coincided with the Italian day festival/parade in the French Quarter. Apparently this sort of thing had been worked out long before I arrived and it was okay.
Americans don't take off from work on Good Friday, which is something still done in England. I can't recall the USA equity market rules about Good Friday, but I think the first Good Friday that the market was open was in 1929 and that year saw the crash that caused the Great Depression of the 1930s.

Lent is not scriptural, was not practiced by the disciples and early church, and is merely a counterfeit in and around the time of the Passover/Days of Unleavened Bread where,
symbolically, sin/leaven is put out for 7 days..an observance that was still going on and still be advocated by Paul, in a New Testament light, in the early church (I Cor 5:8) after our Lord and Saviors crucifixion, but systematically was sent underground, if you will, around and following the Nicene council...that replaced the NT versions of the Holy Days with error. Is it any wonder that Rev 12:9 states what it does.

Karen, nowhere in there does it say he is getting over his alcohol addiction. He implies he starts right up again after Lent is over.

Voltaire also said: when the Sultan sends a ship to Egypt, does he worry over the rats on board?

Candide: I am practically speechless... Why do you have to be so mean-spirited? Shouldn't we applaud whenever someone can get over alcohol addiction? If he did it through faith instead of therapy, why does that bother you so much? And are you saying that if somebody is born into a well off family that means their life should be swell, they are not subject to addiction or trouble? Why are you so bitter that you have to slam just about everybody on this site no matter what they have to say?
You should consider changing your moniker, at least Voltaire had a great sense of humor and a lot of interesting things to say.
