Anti-Abortion Ad Features Neil Armstrong

By Jacqueline L. Salmon

As the nation celebrates the 40th anniversary of the first walk on the moon, the achievement is also being featured in an anti-abortion ad.

The new ad from Catholicvote.org features ultrasound images of a fetus while in the background can be heard the countdown to a space shot. Then appears the famous video of Neil Armstrong on the moon, and his words, "one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind" are heard.

At a press conference last week, as reported by the Christian Post, several former astronauts -- though not Armstrong--spoke out about the "power of every human life," according to Dr. Joseph Kerwin, the first American doctor in space with Skylab 2.

"This historic anniversary is a perfect opportunity to show America, and the world, the power of every human life," said Kerwin. He said the "achievements of the space program remind me of the potential of every human life." He was joined by retired astronaut Dr. Bill Thornton and Gene Kranz, NASA flight director for the Apollo 13 mission.

This is the third of a series of provocative anti-abortion ads by Catholicvote.org, a project of the Fidelis Center for Law and Policy, a conservative Catholic organization based in Chicago. The ads are aimed at "average Americans," as opposed to entrenched abortion opponents or abortion rights supporters. In February, CNN and NBC rejected its first ad, featuring President Obama. Fox accepted its second ad, on adoption, for airing during "American Idol."
