Cardinal George Blasts Notre Dame

By Jacqueline L. Salmon

Cardinal Francis George, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, has come out swinging over the University of Notre Dame's invitation to President Obama to speak at its commencement in May.
In a (rather blurry) video obtained by LifeSiteNews.com, shot over the weekend, George calls the invitation "extremely embarrassing to many, many people who are Catholics."

George, who is archbishop of Chicago, the home of many Fighting Irish alums, says he is speaking as president of the USCCB and has consulted with the administrative committee of the bishops' conference.

"It's clear that Notre Dame did not understand what it means to be Catholic on the issue of this invitation and didn't anticipate the kind of uproar that would be consequent to the decision -- at least to the extent to which is has happened," he says.

While George encourages protesters to continue to call, write and send emails to object to the invitation, he warns that nothing much can be done to change the situation.
"Notre Dame has put itself in a rather impossible position right now, but they're not going to disinvite the president. You just don't do that."

That remark aside, George's comments will probably only serve to throw gasoline on an already raging fire of controversy over the Obama speech. Protesters say that the president, who supports abortion rights, is an inappropriate choice for a Catholic university. By the count of Catholic blogger Michael Sean Winters, nine bishops have issued statements on the speech. (Granted, that is out of 424 U.S. bishops)

Groups like the American Life League are rallying alumni and donors to pressure Notre Dame to drop the president. They say they're making progress, although no donor has gone public to announce that he or she has withdrawn a pledge of actual dollars from the school. But groups say that's coming.
Stay tuned. This will only get wilder as the time to the May 17 event ticks down.

Anti-Catholic bigotry is the anti-semitism of liberals. Funny how the agents of tolearnce can be so disrespectful — and innacurate, by the way. It's why I refuse to join the Democratic party, though I loathe the Republican Party.

The Catholic church has much in common with the Republican party: No ideas; an obsession with one issue; a refusal to follow or believe in the rights and values of our American traditions; a disregard for the suffering of others; a refusal to regard the situational context in which human beings make decisions....The list goes on and on. It is no surprise that where the Catholic Church holds sway, ignorance and poverty reighs. Whence Protestantism? Think.

Cardinal George is correct, "...the invitation is extremely embarrassing to many Catholics...", but correct for the wrong reason. It is extremely embarrassing to me as one of those many Catholics that the bishops and cardinal(s)chose to object at all. My contributions now will go to private charitable institutions, exclusive of the Catholic Church and my local parish.

As a devout Catholic, I can only say that it's too bad that the Cardinal George did not express such disgust at the Iraq War and torture during the Bush Administration.

Obama's position on abortion is disappointing but not surprising. He is only doing what he said he would. By the way, McCain also supported stem-cell research on human embryos. If he had won, would so many Catholics be outraged if Notre Dame invited him to give the commencement address? I doubt it, because so many of those now outraged by the Obama invitation are those Republican Catholics who didn't vote for him anyway.

I support Notre Dame's decision. Having someone speak is not an edorsement of all his/her views. If that were so, how many colleges could ever have a guest speaker? The idea is constructive engagement.

I'm afraid that some people would have the Church either become a small anti-abortion sect or the Republican Party at prayer.

The Vatican is the seat of Satan.

They believe that water thru some hocus pocus can become holy and infants who are sprinkled with it also become holy.

Guess what? Infants are already holy coz they are not capable of sinning. And even if you spray those "holy" water everyday to the priests, they still won't become holy.

Only the Word of God and repentance after hearing the word can make a person holy.

Whatever this bishop says, take it with a grain of salt. These guys are delusional.

Using condoms is not sinful. What is sinful is when two unmarried people commit fornication with condoms or without condoms.

Why is this Satanic church blurring the issue?

Didn't God gave us brains to decide how many children we should have?

Maybe the President should give a speech on the separation of church and state, or on the rule of law, and what it means in a democracy as opposed to what the rule of law means in a theocracy, which many people in the United States who voted for the McCain-Palin ticket would like to see established.

Notre Dame has the right to invite any person. The American League has the right to try to get Obama's invitation dropped. This is a free country. I see free speech at work.

I feel like I am taking crazy pills here. President Obama is not going to speak about abortion, he is going to give a commencement speech. What is wrong with all of these people that think this is such a terrible thing?!
If their single issue with having the current president of the United States come and speak at their school is his stance on abortion, these people have their priorities out of line and need to think of something more important to waste their time with. Obama should turn down the invitation to speak just to spite all of the fanatical lunatics that are objecting to one of the busiest men in the world taking time out of job (which happens to involve running the country) just to fly to an awful place in Indiana to give a speech to a bunch of ungrateful alumni and bishops. Then he should recommend that they call Sarah Palin instead.
