For Hillary and Dems, God Talk a Whisper
Hillary Clinton delivered a resplendent, American Odyssey of a speech last night. In so doing, she may have finally reanimated the increasingly lifeless campaign of her one-time rival, Barack Obama. Too, her address made nary a mention of religion and faith.
Michelle Obama also laid off the God Talk in her remarks on Monday. That's two nights in a row! Two nights in a row of what Republicans would have once dubbed as "godlessness" emanating from the featured speakers at the Democratic National Convention.
But the GOP is going to have a hard time making that talking point stick in 2008. This has everything to do with the development that I and many others have been charting over the past year: the Democrats have labored mightily, and mostly successfully, to erase their image as cultured despisers of religion.
In the past few days, those of you who have been reading my colleagues here at "On Faith" have also learned that the Party is reaching out to faith-based communities at the convention. Check out the recent posts of Susan Thistlethwaite, David Waters and Sally Quinn and you will see that Democrats are praying, witnessing, tambourining, gospeling, and occasionally evicting (!) uppity agnostics.
We still have two more nights to go but these reports as well as my columns may (emphasis on "may") point to an emerging pattern: for the Democrats Prime Time = Secular Time. Of course, prime time was also secular time in 2004. In fact, all of 2004 was secular time in 2004. In 2008, by contrast, the secularism of 10 p.m.-11 p.m. is set within the context of a party at peace with religion for the rest of the day.
Insofar as it is my job to cover the intersection of religion and politics, this lack of faith tinged oratory has the added advantage of permitting me to compose a short post. But in closing let me point to one phrase which I found to be important.
Senator Clinton made reference last night to her support for "gay rights" and the remark struck me as not only brave and warranted, but also unusual. For next to discussions of Church/State relations, no issue has been more marginalized in faith-based politicking as much as the question of gay rights. As a matter of electoral expedience the subject is routinely downplayed or politely avoided when addressing conservative religious constituencies.
I am not claiming that discussions of civil rights for gay persons can only occur under the auspices of a secular government. Rather, I ask you to ponder what kinds of issues can and cannot be raised in Faith and Values outreach as currently practiced in the United States.

Thank you Michael Moore for that letter to God. Thank you Paganplace. And thank you God for hearing Michael More's plea that New Orleans, the big Mississippi casino and those oil riggies in the gulf be spared.
Now can we please get on with the Republican convention. The evangelicals have been scared enough for the time being and I'm running low on laughs, so help me Hanna Barbera.

After this lived Job an hundred and forty years, and saw his sons, and his sons' sons, even four generations.
“saw his sons, and his sons' sons, even four generations.”
the spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him
the spirit of wisdom and understanding
the spirit of counsel and might
the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord
for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord
the Lord shall set his hand again the second time to recover the remnant of his people
shall assemble the outcasts of Israel
gather together the dispersed of Judah
the four corners of the earth
And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots:
And the spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord;
And shall make him of quick understanding in the fear of the Lord: and he shall not judge after the sight of his eyes, neither reprove after the hearing of his ears:
But with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and reprove with equity for the meek of the earth: and he shall smite the earth: with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked.
And righteousness shall be the girdle of his loins, and faithfulness the girdle of his reins.
The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them.
And the cow and the bear shall feed; their young ones shall lie down together: and the lion shall eat straw like the ox.
And the sucking child shall play on the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the cockatrice' den.
They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain: for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea.
And in that day there shall be a root of Jesse, which shall stand for an ensign of the people; to it shall the Gentiles seek: and his rest shall be glorious.
And it shall come to pass in that day, that the Lord shall set his hand again the second time to recover the remnant of his people, which shall be left, from Assyria, and from Egypt, and from Pathros, and from Cush, and from Elam, and from Shinar, and from Hamath, and from the islands of the sea.
And he shall set up an ensign for the nations, and shall assemble the outcasts of Israel, and gather together the dispersed of Judah from the four corners of the earth.
And he said unto Abram, Know of a surety that thy seed shall be a stranger in a land that is not theirs, and shall serve them; and they shall afflict them four hundred years;
And also that nation, whom they shall serve, will I judge: and afterward shall they come out with great substance.
And thou shalt go to thy fathers in peace; thou shalt be buried in a good old age.
But in the fourth generation they shall come hither again: for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet full.
“But in the fourth generation they shall come hither again”
And he hewed two tables of stone like unto the first; and Moses rose up early in the morning, and went up unto mount Sinai, as the Lord had commanded him, and took in his hand the two tables of stone.
And the Lord descended in the cloud, and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of the Lord.
And the Lord passed by before him, and proclaimed, The Lord, The Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth,
Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children's children, unto the third and to the fourth generation.

“and took in his hand the two tables of stone.”
“and proclaimed the name of the Lord.”
“Keeping mercy for thousands”
“forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin”
“visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children's children, unto the third and to the fourth generation.”
The fourth and last generation
And, behold, the Lord stood above it, and said, I am the Lord God of Abraham thy father, and the God of Isaac: the land whereon thou liest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed;
And thy seed shall be as the dust of the earth, and thou shalt spread abroad to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south: and in thee and in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed.
“thy seed shall be as the dust of the earth”
“thou shalt spread abroad to the west”
“to the east”
“to the north”
“to the south”
“in thee and in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed”
All they that be fat upon earth shall eat and worship: all they that go down to the dust shall bow before him: and none can keep alive his own soul.
A seed shall serve him; it shall be accounted to the Lord for a generation.
They shall come, and shall declare his righteousness unto a people that shall be born, that he hath done this.
“All they that be fat upon earth shall eat and worship”
“all they that go down to the dust shall bow before him”

Get professional help before it's too late if it's not already. The Bible is a proved hoax. It's a good one but there are a few things that can stand improvement which they're feverishly working on at Georgetown U -in particular God is missing. The Bible is the word of the fallen angel Lucifer become Lord of Hell Satan, one of their earlier fixes.

Are you responsible for Gustav -been praying a lot or something? He's making a mess out of the GOP's "free advertising" of McCain's VP pick and the convention too. The God vote has been found and now it's having to evacuate. And, I swear Gustav is not alone so help me Hanna.
It's perfectly clear that the "real God" is mad as hell and ain't gonna take it no more. Will Hanna take out Washington DC and get Georgetown? Stop praying so hard we need JB for comedy relief during these troubled times that try man's soul -take harold for example.

But the land, whither ye go to possess it, is a land of hills and valleys, and drinketh water of the rain of heaven:
A land which the Lord thy God careth for: the eyes of the Lord thy God are always upon it, from the beginning of the year even unto the end of the year.
And it shall come to pass, if ye shall hearken diligently unto my commandments which I command you this day, to love the Lord your God, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul,

“all they that go down to the dust shall bow before him”
“none can keep alive his own soul”
“A seed shall serve him”
“it shall be accounted to the Lord for a generation”
“declare his righteousness unto a people that shall be born”
Give ear, O ye heavens, and I will speak; and hear, O earth, the words of my mouth.
My doctrine shall drop as the rain, my speech shall distil as the dew, as the small rain upon the tender herb, and as the showers upon the grass:
Because I will publish the name of the Lord: ascribe ye greatness unto our God.
He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he.
“Give ear, O ye heavens”
“I will speak; and hear”
“O earth, the words of my mouth”
“My doctrine shall drop as the rain”
“I will publish the name of the Lord”
And she conceived again, and bare a son: and she said, Now will I praise the Lord: therefore she called his name Judah; and left bearing.
“I praise the Lord”
“called his name Judah”
Gilead is mine, and Manasseh is mine; Ephraim also is the strength of mine head; Judah is my lawgiver;
“Judah is my lawgiver”
I have set the Lord always before me: because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.
“I have set the Lord always before me”
“he is at my right hand”
When my spirit was overwhelmed within me, then thou knewest my path. In the way wherein I walked have they privily laid a snare for me.
I looked on my right hand, and beheld, but there was no man that would know me: refuge failed me; no man cared for my soul.
“I looked on my right hand”
“there was no man that would know me”
“no man cared for my soul”
Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied.
“Then said David”
“I come to thee in the name of the Lord of hosts”
And God remembered Rachel, and God hearkened to her, and opened her womb.
And she conceived, and bare a son; and said, God hath taken away my reproach:
And she called his name Joseph; and said, The Lord shall add to me another son.
“God remembered Rachel”
“and opened her womb”
“she called his name Joseph”
“The Lord shall add to me another son”
And Jacob called the name of the place where God spake with him, Bethel.
And they journeyed from Bethel; and there was but a little way to come to Ephrath: and Rachel travailed, and she had hard labour.
And it came to pass, when she was in hard labour, that the midwife said unto her, Fear not; thou shalt have this son also.
And it came to pass, as her soul was in departing, (for she died) that she called his name Benoni: but his father called him Benjamin.
And Rachel died, and was buried in the way to Ephrath, which is Bethlehem.
And Jacob set a pillar upon her grave: that is the pillar of Rachel's grave unto this day.
“The Lord shall add to me another son”
“she called his name Benoni”
“but his father called him Benjamin”
And he lifted up his eyes, and saw his brother Benjamin, his mother's son, and said, Is this your younger brother, of whom ye spake unto me? And he said, God be gracious unto thee, my son.
And Joseph made haste; for his bowels did yearn upon his brother: and he sought where to weep; and he entered into his chamber, and wept there.
“he lifted up his eyes”
“saw his brother Benjamin”
“The Lord shall add to me another son”
“his mother's son”
“she called his name Benoni”
“God be gracious unto thee, my son”
“for his bowels did yearn upon his brother”
And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,
Speak unto Aaron and unto his sons, saying, On this wise ye shall bless the children of Israel, saying unto them,
The Lord bless thee, and keep thee:
The Lord make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee:
The Lord lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace.
And they shall put my name upon the children of Israel, and I will bless them.
“On this wise ye shall bless the children of Israel, saying unto them”
“The Lord bless thee”
“and keep thee”
“The Lord make his face shine upon thee”
“be gracious unto thee”
“The Lord lift up his countenance upon thee”

“And they shall put my name upon the children of Israel”
“and I will bless them”

Are there any among the vanities of the Gentiles that can cause rain? or can the heavens give showers? art not thou he, O Lord our God? therefore we will wait upon thee: for thou hast made all these things.
“Are there any among the vanities of the Gentiles that can cause rain”
“or can the heavens give showers? art not thou he, O Lord our God”
These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens,
“generations of the heavens and of the earth”
“the day that the Lord made the earth and the heavens”
She is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her: and happy is every one that retaineth her.
The Lord by wisdom hath founded the earth; by understanding hath he established the heavens.
“She is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her”
“The Lord by wisdom hath founded the earth”
“understanding hath he established the heavens.”
“the day that the Lord made the earth and the heavens”
But the land, whither ye go to possess it, is a land of hills and valleys, and drinketh water of the rain of heaven:
A land which the Lord thy God careth for: the eyes of the Lord thy God are always upon it, from the beginning of the year even unto the end of the year.
And it shall come to pass, if ye shall hearken diligently unto my commandments which I command you this day, to love the Lord your God, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul,
That I will give you the rain of your land in his due season, the first rain and the latter rain, that thou mayest gather in thy corn, and thy wine, and thine oil.
“drinketh water of the rain of heaven”
“A land which the Lord thy God careth for”
“I will give you the rain of your land in his due season, the first rain and the latter rain”
Then said the Lord unto Moses, Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather a certain rate every day, that I may prove them, whether they will walk in my law, or no.
“I will rain bread from heaven for you”
“the people shall go out and gather a certain rate every day”
“I may prove them, whether they will walk in my law, or no”
Then I will give you rain in due season, and the land shall yield her increase, and the trees of the field shall yield their fruit.
And your threshing shall reach unto the vintage, and the vintage shall reach unto the sowing time: and ye shall eat your bread to the full, and dwell in your land safely.
And I will give peace in the land, and ye shall lie down, and none shall make you afraid: and I will rid evil beasts out of the land, neither shall the sword go through your land.
“I will give you rain in due season”
“the trees of the field shall yield their fruit”

“the first rain and the latter rain”
The Lord shall open unto thee his good treasure, the heaven to give the rain unto thy land in his season, and to bless all the work of thine hand: and thou shalt lend unto many nations, and thou shalt not borrow.
And the Lord shall make thee the head, and not the tail; and thou shalt be above only, and thou shalt not be beneath; if that thou hearken unto the commandments of the Lord thy God, which I command thee this day, to observe and to do them:
“the heaven to give the rain unto thy land in his season”
“to bless all the work of thine hand”
“the Lord shall make thee the head”
And it shall come to pass, if ye shall hearken diligently unto my commandments which I command you this day, to love the Lord your God, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul,
That I will give you the rain of your land in his due season, the first rain and the latter rain, that thou mayest gather in thy corn, and thy wine, and thine oil.

And his mother answered and said, Not so; but he shall be called John.
And they said unto her, There is none of thy kindred that is called by this name.
And they made signs to his father, how he would have him called.
And he asked for a writing table, and wrote, saying, His name is John. And they marvelled all.
And his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue loosed, and he spake, and praised God.
And fear came on all that dwelt round about them: and all these sayings were noised abroad throughout all the hill country of Judaea.
And all they that heard them laid them up in their hearts, saying, What manner of child shall this be! And the hand of the Lord was with him.
And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Ghost, and prophesied, saying,
Blessed be the Lord God of Israel; for he hath visited and redeemed his people,
And hath raised up an horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David;
As he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets, which have been since the world began:
That we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us;
To perform the mercy promised to our fathers, and to remember his holy covenant;
The oath which he sware to our father Abraham,
That he would grant unto us, that we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies might serve him without fear,
In holiness and righteousness before him, all the days of our life.
“Not so; but he shall be called John”

“In holiness and righteousness before him, all the days of our life”
In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea,
And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.
And the same John had his raiment of camel's hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his meat was locusts and wild honey.
Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judaea, and all the region round about Jordan,
And were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins.
But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance:
And think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.
And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:
“Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.”
“Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
“And were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins.”
“O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?”
“the axe is laid unto the root of the trees”
“therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down”
“and cast into the fire”
“I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance”
Hear ye the word which the Lord speaketh unto you, O house of Israel:
Thus saith the Lord, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them.
For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe.
They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not.
They are upright as the palm tree, but speak not: they must needs be borne, because they cannot go. Be not afraid of them; for they cannot do evil, neither also is it in them to do good.
Forasmuch as there is none like unto thee, O Lord; thou art great, and thy name is great in might.
Who would not fear thee, O King of nations? for to thee doth it appertain: forasmuch as among all the wise men of the nations, and in all their kingdoms, there is none like unto thee.
But they are altogether brutish and foolish: the stock is a doctrine of vanities.
“Thus saith the Lord”
“Learn not the way of the heathen”
“be not dismayed at the signs of heaven”
“for the heathen are dismayed at them”
“For the customs of the people are vain”
“for one cutteth a tree out of the forest”
“the work of the hands of the workman”
“with the axe”
“they fasten it with nails and with hammers”

“But they are altogether brutish and foolish”
“the stock is a doctrine of vanities”
Are there any among the vanities of the Gentiles that can cause rain? or can the heavens give showers? art not thou he, O Lord our God? therefore we will wait upon thee: for thou hast made all these things.
“Are there any among the vanities of the Gentiles that can cause rain”
“or can the heavens give showers? art not thou he, O Lord our God”
The word of the Lord which came to Jeremiah the prophet against the Gentiles;
“Jeremiah the prophet against the Gentiles”
The lion is come up from his thicket, and the destroyer of the Gentiles is on his way; he is gone forth from his place to make thy land desolate; and thy cities shall be laid waste, without an inhabitant.
“The lion is come up from his thicket”
“the destroyer of the Gentiles is on his way”
How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity? and the scorners delight in their scorning, and fools hate knowledge?
Turn you at my reproof: behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you, I will make known my words unto you.
Because I have called, and ye refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no man regarded;
But ye have set at nought all my counsel, and would none of my reproof:
“How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity”
“the scorners delight in their scorning, and fools hate knowledge”
“Turn you at my reproof: behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you”
“I will make known my words unto you.”
“Because I have called, and ye refused”
“I have stretched out my hand, and no man regarded”
And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God.
And he blessed him, and said, Blessed be Abram of the most high God, possessor of heaven and earth:
And blessed be the most high God, which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand. And he gave him tithes of all.
And the king of Sodom said unto Abram, Give me the persons, and take the goods to thyself.
And Abram said to the king of Sodom, I have lift up mine hand unto the Lord, the most high God, the possessor of heaven and earth,
That I will not take from a thread even to a shoelatchet, and that I will not take any thing that is thine, lest thou shouldest say, I have made Abram rich:
Save only that which the young men have eaten, and the portion of the men which went with me, Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre; let them take their portion.
“king of Sodom said unto Abram”
“Give me the persons, and take the goods to thyself.”
“Abram said to the king of Sodom”
“I have lift up mine hand unto the Lord”
“That I will not take from a thread even to a shoelatchet”
“that I will not take any thing that is thine”
“Save only that which”
“the men which went with me”
Then Samuel told the people the manner of the kingdom, and wrote it in a book, and laid it up before the Lord. And Samuel sent all the people away, every man to his house.
And Saul also went home to Gibeah; and there went with him a band of men, whose hearts God had touched.
But the children of Belial said, How shall this man save us? And they despised him, and brought him no presents. But he held his peace.
“And Saul also went home to Gibeah”
“there went with him a band of men”
“whose hearts God had touched”
“the children of Belial said, How shall this man save us”
“And they despised him, and brought him no presents”
“But he held his peace”
My bowels, my bowels! I am pained at my very heart; my heart maketh a noise in me; I cannot hold my peace, because thou hast heard, O my soul, the sound of the trumpet, the alarm of war.
Destruction upon destruction is cried; for the whole land is spoiled: suddenly are my tents spoiled, and my curtains in a moment.
How long shall I see the standard, and hear the sound of the trumpet?
For my people is foolish, they have not known me; they are sottish children, and they have none understanding: they are wise to do evil, but to do good they have no knowledge.
I beheld the earth, and, lo, it was without form, and void; and the heavens, and they had no light.
“My bowels, my bowels! I am pained at my very heart”
“I cannot hold my peace”
“the sound of the trumpet, the alarm of war”
“Destruction upon destruction is cried”
“they have not known me; they are sottish children”
“they have none understanding”
“they are wise to do evil”
“but to do good they have no knowledge”
“I beheld the earth”
“it was without form, and void”
“and the heavens, and they had no light.”
In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.
“God created the heaven and the earth”
“And the earth was without form, and void”
“darkness was upon the face of the deep”

I mean, seriously, Paul. What's the Mother-loving *use* of a prophecy of doom if all you're going to do is feel vindicated after finally managing to bring it *about?*
Apocalyptarians were just as certain that the USSR was gonna nuke us all any minute, back in the 80s, and that *that* fit Biblical prophecy just perfectly, just like the same stuff was used in previous decades about completely *different* things.
Heck, they thought the number of letters in Reagan's name made *him* the Antichrist, now he's every Republican's darling.

" Paul Humphries:
"In 1978, I started "decrypting" the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. At first, it was done for fun and to keep up some of my NSA skills. The results of that exercise was a lot more than just interesting."
Oh, Gods. What *is* it with you guys with the nukes and spooks? :)
"While I was assigned to NSA HQ in Ft. Meade, I got a lot of help from other people, who also thought it was interesting. They said that I have to make some predictions and those predictions have to come true for the exercise to have any meaning whatsoever."
Ok, let's see some meaningful predictions, as revealed in 1999:
"Using the decrypted information, and it was the only source that I used, I made the following predictions in 1986:
--The USSR would either fall or change its form of government.
Since a lot of effort was directed at trying to bring that about, very nice...
"--The price of oil would go above $50 a barrel"
Wow. Talk about your safe predictions, was that even corrected for *inflation?*
"--Diseases in the beef, pork, and poultry industries."
Already present to some degree... Let's deregulate USDA enforcement in the name of the God Vote.... This will prove the Apocalypse is imminent when ....not regulating the meat-handling might reseult in disease...
Uncanny.
"--Food would become extremely expensive"
Good thing you didn't read any of those other economic forecasts about what would happen... Or it might be less Godly...
"--There will be a religious reawakening or a lot of religious unrest...maybe a war."
What, supporting the Taliban and running on 'Faith and Values' tickets wasn't going to *bring that about cause you were *doing things to bring that about* anyway?
It's a miracle!
"--Old diseases with new twists and new diseases will appear that affect human, animal, insect life."
Yeah, but don't believe any body who says this is going to happen by the same mechanisms as *evolution* and making sure there's disincentive to complete your full course of antibiotics and make yourself a Petri dish for resistant strains of TB...
"--The USA and other nations will suffer extreme debt and inflation...and this will lead to a trade war. Very bad economic times."
Again. This took a Bible to see coming when Reagan was... Putting us in debt?
"--World War III (China and Russia will be the main players in it. It will also be an eugenic war."
You know, Captain Kirk ran into a parallel world like that, come to think of it.
What was the moral of that story?
"I was on CBS News in Nov 1999, and brought this out, but I was considered a nut case."
At least it was for the right reasons? :)

I am glad the God talk was kept to a minimum. God has no place in politics or the White House.
Besides, Jesus wouldn't even be considered a dem or repub if he were alive today.
Get over it.

Congratulations Jacques. I'm happy fer ya. The "God vote" was hiding out in Alaska all along.
The die is cast and the stage now set for another debate on abortion that is sure to "energize evangelicals."
Goodbye government that's an abortion. Hello government that's an abortion rerun.
It gives Bubba a thrill to hear they're gonna drill. Et te Jacques Berlinerblau? I'll wager, like moonshine whiskey in Muskogee Oklahoma, "faith based initiatives" give you the biggest thrill of them all.

Anyway, I feel that I have learned more about the bible and what it really means than most of the religious leaders.
The US and other countries religious leaders use the bible and religion as a tool to keep the people in line. Race and Religion are two biggest passion amplifiers that exist. Politics need a bogeyman to scare the people--but the bogeyman has a short shelf life--unless you add religion and race to that soup bowl, then the shelf life and the passion is extended a thousand fold.
I believe those preachers think they are like the angel in the book of Revelation that stands with one foot in the sea and the other foot on land and prophesies--but the preachers have one foot in religion and the other in politics all the while they believe themselves to be religiously right--but they are neither.

I t is fine for my party to attract evangelicals but it must not be at the expense of us humanists!I prefer Paul Kurtz and Arthur Kaplan over Jim Wallace, reason over faith, the we just say so of credulity.

Whatcha looking for Jacques, a pope or a president?
When the election of America's pastor comes up we can get to religion in political speeches. In the mean time I noticed all speakers said, "God bless you" and "God bless America." None said "Billy Graham bless you" or "the pope bless America." Does that mean Billy and his holiness damns them? That damning business is a two way street.
I see you're still trying to unite church and state. Better unite God and religion first. Your "values voters" are all devil worshipers.
Look what their devil has already brought America. And here comes Gustav right on time, Lucifer punishing sinners for not mentioning his churches. I'll bet you remember that hoax buster site -"sell your soul" page. Just thinking about it makes the pope's head hurt and Frankie Graham's too. When you gonna repent?

Victoria - I don't understand how fracturing interests into smaller parties would accomplish anything. Maybe I'm missing something. That's a sincere question. Wouldn't alliances be necessary, in the end, which would all come down to what we basically have now even if people's allegiances went by more than two names?

John, thanks for responding so reasonably. The big tent that has to squeeze various groups and the squabbles and real disagreements that occur is one of the reason that I, and 67% of the americans polled- feel the 2 party system is not serving us well.

Victoria - In general I agree with you but it was noticed by many gay people that Clinton never even mentioned us, whereas Obama did. I understand we're still a political hot potato but in 2008 we have at least reached the point where the word "gay" can be uttered without committing political suicide. As for saying "San Francisco values" she did in fact say just that at one point in Pennsylvania while trying to milk Obama's "bitter" statement - galling given the support that her husband received as president from the gay community. Let's face it. Hillary got a little carried away trying to appeal to the white blue collar voter who isn't thrilled by the idea of joining the party "of all those minorities".

John in Chi-town-
I wasn't trying to minimize your slight- I just felt it may not have been an intended one on Hillary's part-
If you feel that she hasn't been a friend to gays- it wolud take an overt statement - not a perceived dog whistle code to the right wing.
I'm a Muslim, and a supporter of Obama's.
Now, I understand that I cannot expect him to fall on the sword for Muslims- he has actually snubbed Muslims in public- but I also understand that if he even acts like he LIKES us a tiniest little bit- it is giving fuel to his enemies.
So, have a little patience I guess with our politicians- who may not be able to say openly something they feel privately.
Blame the far right extemists who are maliciously fostering fear and panic-
I'm out to see a dem in the white house- and if I have to be disregarded for while, or even openly dissed- I'll bite the bullet for awhile.
I fear I may have overeacted in my response to you.
Please accept my apology for doing so.

Hillary never used such a phrase as San Francisco values.
She said this-
"I am well aware that at a fundraiser in San Francisco, he said some things that many people in Pennsylvania and beyond Pennsylvania have found offensive."
She spoke about the clinging to guns and bibles statement- several times- she accused Obamam of being condescending- (that's when arugula eating became an elitist crime)
We're not rewriting history already are we?
Maybe you could find the quote and source and cite them.

Don't forget that Hillary in her Annie Oakley phase accused Obama of having "San Francisco values". And we all know what that means - your children will be gyrating naked on a float if you don't watch out. Otherwise she was silent on gay rights until she abandoned her quest. Then our goal of legal equality was suddenly mentionable again as she contemplated the debt she had rung up.

Once again, you continue to prove that faith-based politicking, 1) has NO place in America and 2) it may take TWO centuries to rid ourselves as a nation of ANY religious impact on our government, with views like the ones you declare here, rather than maybe just one century.
One can only hope that people are smart enough to STOP listening to your views and have made up their mind to reject your dribble.

Great story. Barak Obama was the first to make faith a part of his campaign. All the others followed suit. Unfortunately, at Rick Warren's church he did not come out and say the things that we as the conservative right would have hoped for, like stricter laws on abortions or something to indicate that he values life. That does not mean, he will not going forward, hopefully, he will have a change of heart.

Kennedy cited gay rights, too. And, by the way, this quantification and qualification of politicians' talk of religion is a sad commentary on the times in which we live.

Three quick points:
1) The "separation of church and state" is incredibly misunderstood by most people, both on the left and the right. The First Amendment makes no such statement - the "separation" is judicially-created. There are two relevant statements in the First Amendment: (1) Congress is prohibited from passing laws "respecting an establishment of religion" or (2) prohibiting the free exercise thereof." The prohibitions in the First Amendment are specifically geared towards protecting individual religious beliefs from the government and not the government from religion.
2) The second point is that religious, or any other closely-held beliefs, are perfectly fine bases for taking a political position or casting a vote. The emancipation movement, to name just one cause that has been universally vindicated by history, was championed by religious movements. Arguing that individuals (be they politicians or just voters) must check their religious beliefs at the courthouse door is not only practically impossible, but also poor policy.
3) Legal or political policy often cannot be divorced from our religious (or aethiest, or any other fundamental) beliefs. If you believe, as a faithful Catholic, that life begins at conception, that belief legitimately should have a profound affect on your position on abortion. Likewise, if you have strong religious feelings regarding the Earth and God's entrustment of the environment to humanity, these feelings should inform your opinions regarding the environment. This holds true for "gay rights" and a multitude of other issues, too. To say that something is a "legal issue" and not a "moral one" is flatly wrong -- our laws are an embodiment of our society's morals.

I have to disagree that the forum is a joke.
Liberals (of all stripes, including the stripe of Frere Jacques) serve God's Will, even at the very moment they (and he) intend to subvert God's Will.
God has always instructed using negative examples, the more negative the better, i. e., Hitler and Nero.
You may be sure that the common denominator of many of God's Negative Exemplars is a denial of God's omnipotence. That necessary so that God's Negative Exemplar can proceed in hubris and blindness, like Odysseus.

'Senator Clinton made reference last night to her support for "gay rights" and the remark struck me as not only brave and warranted, but also unusual. For next to discussions of Church/State relations, no issue has been more marginalized in faith-based politicking as much as the question of gay rights. As a matter of electoral expedience the subject is routinely downplayed or politely avoided when addressing conservative religious constituencies.'
Why give Hillary all the credit for courage in advocating a liberal agenda without reference to God? What about Nancy Pelosi, who PONTIFICATED that Catholic Doctrine is IFFY about when life's conceived?
Oh, that was brave of Nancy, won't you concede, Frere Jacques? It so varies from what the Pope and the Cardinals say about the conception of life.

This forum is a joke. It exists only for God-haters to spew their atheist views. Guess what?--Atheism is a religious view that should be separated as well.
There is not such thing as the mythical "Separation of Church and State" This is not in the US Constitution or any federal laws. The Constitution only states that CONGRESS cannot make any laws regarding the establishment of religion. IE no state religion and protecting the church from congressional oversight.

There should be ZERO "god talk" in politics.
ZERO.
Why? We have separation of church and State in America - and for good reason.
Religion used to be the "opiate of the masses" - today it is the "crack cocain of politicians".
Faith is personal and has NO place in politics beyond a single, faith proclaiming utterance within a candidate's biography stating their faith.
Grow up and shut up about it. Its personal.

Why would expect any "god talk" at a political convention? We have a separation of church and state in this country, as you allude to in your article but, sadly, as the Republicans have ignored along with the rest of the constitution. As for the comment on gay rights, that is a legal issue, not a moral or religious issue, and as such it is an appropriate one to be discussed by the government tasked with making such laws. The fact that gays have been openly discriminated against by the Bush administration (again, contravening the constitution) makes that issue fair game for a party determined to undo the many wrongs committed by the republicans.
