The God Vote

Jacques Berlinerblau

Jacques Berlinerblau is associate Professor and Director of the Program for Jewish Civilization at the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University. Many years ago he received a doctorate in ancient Near Eastern Languages and Literature from New York University. Soon after, for reasons that he himself has never fully understood, he completed another doctorate in theoretical sociology from the New School for Social Research. Feeling sufficiently credentialed to write about and research any topic under the sun, his areas of interest include the Bible, its composition, its interpretation, and in particular the way that it has been dragooned into modern political discourse. To this end his new book is called "Thumpin' It: The Use and Abuse of the Bible in Today's Presidential Politics" (Westminster John Knox), described by First Things as "laugh-out-loud funny as well as astute." He also has published "The Secular Bible: Why Nonbelievers Must Take Religion Seriously" (Cambridge:2005). An earlier book, "Heresy in the University: The Black Athena Controversy and the Responsibilities of American Intellectuals" (Rutgers: 1999) probed the manner in which institutions of higher education handle scholarly dissent. He has written extensively in scholarly journals on the subject of heretics, intellectuals, secularism, and Jewish civilization. This confluence of interests accounts, to a great degree, for his fascination with modern Jewish-American literature. A life-long New Yorker, he has recently moved to Washington D.C. with his family and is beguiled by the strange traffic lights that count down the seconds until they finally change colors. Close.

Hillary Clinton's Dream Week

The agony in the Obama camp will be prolonged for there is no telling when Wright might pop up again to opine that the American government wishes to murder its own citizens.

In less than 48 hours we'll know if we know or need to wait some more to find out what we know.

This Jeremiah Wright thing is being worn out before the big game begins -- like a team playing a full scale practice game just before the big game. Of course it does serve to toughen them up as well as wear them down. It's just a matter of time and time keeps marching on.

"It's the economy stupid" has come back in style with a twist. "It's the energy stupid" footnote oil is a little more to the point. As usual, the devil is in the details but the location is as far from hell as one can hardly get, frozen Alaskan wasteland jealously guarded by ecologist.

Could hell for the oil interest, that's suddenly everyone be freezing over? Jeremiah Wright with his official demand that America go to hell is getting a bit boring. I think there's a significant mismatch between public and media interest in it.

Best week ever Hill!

Conchita:

It is very degrading for Americans to project Barack Obama as the best next president of America. Unfortunately, if Obama is going to be the next president due to sympathetic skins and racial votes, the Black Ones, USA will collapse before you Americans know it. Barack Obama is a pugnacious in-experienced and un-committed leader. What he will just do is to infuse African Leadership to the most respected country world - what a shame! Jon Michael:

Reading some of these comments, one appreciates how much danger there is in the combination of hate and ignorance. Obama is attracting the young and the country has seen a massive registration of new voters. The democratisation of funding for candidates is one of the most important developments in recent years so that special interests do not rule the country. I believe in Obama as he is inspiring. He is half white/half black and will offer us a post-race future. We need to forever put race behind us and black people need to have faith in the future.

The USA cannot afford to continue with the war in terms of cost and in terms of the 30000 US soldiers injured and over 4000 killed. Surely, the pro-war republicans can see this. As the USA has spent its savings on the war, it has little now to spend on infrastructure and oher measures to counter-act recession. Support Obama.

All I can say is - let HILLARY be nominated as the Democratic Presidential Candidate - no further issues

Berlinerblau is a rare Barack Hussein supporting Jew, perhaps to show his "intellectual" status as a Professor. His disdain, indeed mocking of the ordinary white factory worker is palpable. No wonder he loves the elitist, patronizing, "I was never a practicing Muslim" "convenient" Christian Barack Hussein. Unfortunately Jews in America do not have numbers, merely money! Otherwise Barack Hussein would have proclaimed himself a Jew as well!

Why should Berlinerblau feel so resentful about Jeremiah Wright's fulminations against America and whites? He has not criticized Barack Hussein has he? Is there a sub text that reads Wright knows more than he has been telling, in particular about Barack Hussein's pre 1988 Muslim past and his convenient "conversion" to Christianity no doubt at the behest of Wright who saw the political potential of Barack Hussein and correctly assessed that he had to rid himself of Islam if he had to get ahead in American politics?

Instead of focusing on this expose of Barack Hussein, Berlinerblau mocks Hillary for talking about the issues that concern ordinary Americans, possible loss of jobs, galloping health care costs, threat of foreclosure and loss of homes, deteriorating public schools and loss of American influence world over.

If in a fit of collective insanity the super delegates nominate Barack Hussein, these ordinary working class white Americans will switch to McCain and oust Barack Hussein who is the real threat to our country.

Joe Lynn:

Was it a dream week? The NY Times poll released today shows a dramatic shift in momentum back to Obama. McCain and she were the big losers in the poll following their call for the gasoline tax holiday, thus allowing Obama to shift the campaign discussion back to the pandering of politicians and the need to change the way Washington works. It was a big blunder that coupled with Obama's Tuesday newsconference managed to get Wright behind us. The advantage of the campaign landscape has been returned to Obama.

So here we are again with the "Neds" of America about to decide who will be the new leader. And the criteria they will use to decide their preferences: the biases against those who preach to a different congregation. No wonder America has the leadership it does. Successful politicians appealing to the lowest possible common denominator. America deserves better than Neds' choice.

Raul Pedraza:

My name is Raul Pedraza I am a Cuban American U.S. Army veteran, my grandfather Rafael fought in the WW1 in the battle of the Marne, my son Jorge just returned from Iraq after having served proudly in the 82nd Airborne in Tikrit. I also have an awesome wife who is african-american.

I have absolutely no doubt about Barack Obama's patriotism and find him inspirational and ready to become Commander in Chief. I prefer the candidate of true integrity who can admit a mistake unlike Hillary and her vote for the Iraq war and sniper fire stories. Supporting John McCain will merely let the disastrous results of the George W. years continue to drag us down.

I use my real name in this blog instead of a pseudonym because I am very proud to be supporting Barack Obama for President and wish to dispel a few of the myths that the media continually pours down our throats. No not all Cubans support the Republicans, No not all Latinos favor Hillary over Barack, No not all Army veterans are for John McCain though we do honor his sacrifice it does not make him uniquely qualified to be our leader.

I have contributed all the hard earned dollars legally allowed me to support the man whom I had the great privilege of meeting at an inner city youth center in Miami's Overtown neighborhood.

Barack Obama is the real deal folks and I pray our great nation is smart enough to give us a President of integrity and Intellect two traits sorely missing as of late.

Again my name is Raul Pedraza and I wholeheartedly support Barack Obama for President of the Untied States.

VC, MD:

Some people who could not justify their opposition to Obama are using pastor Wright as a cover to attack Obama. However if you look at all the polls the core support for both Clinton and Obama has not changed. They both are at about 45% support on an average nationally. Rest 10% are undecided who like Obama but they don't want to take a stand and line up behind whoever seems to be winning. That group gets influenced by these attacks into believing that Obama is probably going to lose and Hillary's support goes up by a few points. If Obama wanted he could pick up dozens of scandals where the Clintons (and not their pastors or neighbors) are directly involved and Clinton would be toast. He is trying to keep the debate on issues. I guess after India and NC it will become clear (Obama wins NC and Clinton IN with 4-5 net delegates for Obama) that Clinton can't win the nomination. At that point these undecideds would start leaning towards Obama and his support will start going up.

The sooner the democrats realize that Obama is their nominee and they start lining up behind him the better chance they will have at defeating republicans in November.

sunny:

What is Rev. Wright's goal? It certainly is not to defend the Black Church and if so why does the responsibility fall solely on him? You have to wonder is he working for the Clinton Campaign? Maybe the Republicans (maybe? since he has single handily made the democrats primary season run longer than it should). He has wasted time (that should be directed towards focusing on the Republicans) and money contributed by Obama Supporter nationwide. What legacy does this man want to leave behind? if he has any sense he should retire quietly or else he will be remembered as that Disaster Pastor that ruined the chances of the First African American President.

martin edwin andersen:

Charlotte Observer backs Obama

North Carolina's biggest paper backs Obama for his potential to restore decency to politics, and for a list of reasons it doesn't like Hillary:

A few examples:

Many of her supporters seem intent on depicting Sen. Obama as the Jesse Jackson of 2008, a leader who appeals to an ethnic minority ...

She sometimes exaggerates her influence and experiences...

Florida and Michigan were stripped of national convention delegates after breaking party rules by scheduling their primaries too early. The candidates didn't campaign in them. Yet after Sen. Clinton did well in those states, she pushed to change the rules and count the votes. That's a cynical, self-serving effort to corrupt the selection process.

Her tendency to tell voters what they want to hear is disturbing. Her proposal to suspend the federal tax on gasoline this summer is campaign gimmickry, not leadership.

candide:

It is increasingly clear that Barack needs to divorce both Wright and his wife Michelle -- they are both loud-mouthed black racists.

But we're wasting time. Before Wright Obama had a slight chance of getting to the White House. Now he has none.

center:

AHMAD,

Your thinking represents the premises on which Rev. Wright spoke during the Press Club performance. Your suggestion is premised on the Dark Side of life.
The US has changed; you need to keep up with the times.

DonJulio:

But will the Neds care enough about all the steel insight Hillary offers, enough to show up at the polls on Tuesday? We'll know soon enough.

The mistress of smoke and mirrors and making sound bites misses all of the key opportunties to turn the discussion to long-term working solutions. Is anyone else tired of this being the model for successful politics?

Now she's an expert in mechanics too?! Remember Al Gore - who invented everything? He really emerged as a credible and strong leader when he turned his attention to things he believes in and is passionate about (like Obama does).

How are Americans fooled so easily?

thomas c:

Where is the condemnation of the blatant double standard that has been so evident in the media over the last six weeks? Why does Jacques find it so hard to acknowledge that the controversial views of pastors with whom candidates have associated are only imputed to the candidate if he's black?

We all know Obama has had a tough week, and many tough weeks, since the media decided that Wright is fair game but Hagee/Falwell/Robertson are not. We didn't need Jacques to tell us that. As a scholar posting here at the Post's "On Faith" debate, I would have expected some insight from Jacques as to why the subject of faith and politics are approached by the media in such widely divergent ways depending on whether the candidates and pastor are black or white.

Really, Jacques, don't you have any view on this conspicuous unfairness? Doesn't your faith require you to speak out? Or does it permit you to remain perfectly silent in the fact of this discrimination on the basis of race and faith?

avwrobel:

Nice burst of insight Jacques. It shows how the Republicans will club Obama like a baby seal in the general election. The Democrats are trying to find a way out of this Obama fix, and launch Hillary Clinton to the presidency. At least that's what I sure hope is happening!

Kevin:

It really is disappointing to be here. But, I guess all things happen for a reason. The good news now is that there is a virtual tie for the nomination. The smart party will understand that the best ticket for the Democrats is Gore/Obama. This will also allow the party to heal. So, second round vote for Gore!

NAYYAR SHABBIR AHMAD:

I READ YOUR ARTICLE WITH INTEREST. EVEN BEFORE THE PASTOR CAME ON THE SCENE, I DIDN'T WANT OBAMA:

VOTE FOR HILLARY CLINTON

There’s a certain section of America
Who will never vote for Senator Obama
Not because they don’t like him
But, because of the colour of his skin
So far they’ve been ignored
But, come Election Day
They’ll vote in Senator McCain
Not because they agree with him
But, because they prefer the colour of his skin
So my advice to you is:
Vote for the safer bet
Vote for Senator Hillary Clinton

NAYYAR SHABBIR AHMAD

Beverly:

I support Obama for President of the United States, but Michelle Obama does need to keep her mouth shut. Each interview is a disaster for Clinton's worthless campaigns advantage.

Beverly:

How Senator Clinton acts with blue collar workers and how she votes once elected are two different demeanors. She voted yes on the war in Iraq. The majority of soldiers sent to Iraq are blue collar workers children.

Beverly:

Senator Clinton connects effortlessly with blue collar workers! What about Nafta? What about voting yes for the war in Iraq? Who is being sent to fight that war? The blue collar workers children. Senator Clinton's mother enjoys her at 60 years old, those parent of deceased soldiers won't experience the late in life companionship. How she acts in during an election and the decision she makes once elected are not the same. I am not impressed. It is appalling that she could even be considered as a nominee this late in the game by superdelegates because of Rev. Wright and "bitter" comments.

The Man:

If Obama has any hope of being President he needs to throw his big ugly Racist wife under the Bus with his Grandmother and the Rev. Weight. I am sure the Obama cult will believe him when he tells them he just discovery she was an American hating, Racist!

jon sid:

Why isn''t the media asking Chelsea Clinton why she didn''t speak up when she heard her mother telling the Bosnia lie so many times? Is Hillary a role model for other American mothers by taking her daughter into a dangerous area where there was sniper fire? But actually she didn't do that, she only lied about it so that makes her a good mother after all. By her daughter not challenging her mother, this will come back to haunt her should she ever run for public office.

deshane:

In spite of what Obama thinks, even white stupid bitter rednecks that Believe in God, loves this Nation, support the second Amendment, Article IV Section IV against Invasion, and the rule of Law, know this much: When you take money out of your wallet and lay that money down for the same cause, week after week, month after month, year after year, for 20 years...you HAVE endorsed and believe in the Message and you have most assuredly endorsed the MESSENGER.

For 20 years Obama has supported Reverend Wright and his Radical American Hating Racist Paranoid Rants, but now that he wants to be President he throws the man under the bus alone with his Grandmother. The question is just how bitter is Obama at whites, and what kind of man is he that is seeks to be President? It seems that with Obama Bull Sh-t Talks and Truth, Honestly and Character walks! Its time for American voters to throw Obama under the Bus!

dewayne:

Part of the Obama snow job where he portrayed Rev. Wright's paranoid rants as coming from anger that is the baggage as the legacy of of old white racism, carried by old blacks. Well, there is current-day stuff that is alive and well, carried by the young blacks, that is a lot worse than the racism, sexism and homophobic intolerance of the older generation of blacks. It's called Hip Hop, Gangsta and Street culture. It's full of racism, paranoia, anger, violence, abuse of women, sexism and a whole lot of dysfunctional antisocial expression schemes. The social psychological disordered behavior that Rev. Wright's hate-speech-as-sermons represents and coveys to blacks and supported by Obama is alive and well in the current-day generation in Black America. It's just in a newer more dangerous carnation.

Blacks leaders should start speaking out about taking some personal responsibility for high rate of high school drop out, sexual promiscuity, children born out of wedlock, , absence of male parenting/role models, drugs, crime, incarceration, AIDS, instead of playing the victimhood game and blaming whites for black failures! Until that time there will always be hate mongers & race baiter,s to use them and profit from their plight like the Rev. Wright, Rev. Jessie Jackson, Rev. Al Sharpton, as well as 10,s of thousands of White and Black Politicians. In fact the whole Democrat party! Hand outs, instead of a hand up, is the means of keeping Blacks down and economic Slaves! Keeping Blacks as an race of victims and believing all of the above is Whitey fault is designed to keep them from progressing instead of a race of achievers! It is in the best interest of Black preachers and Democrat politicians! Blacks will never be lead to the promise land by hate mongering Preachers like Rev. Wright or by bottom feeding Politicians that wants and works to keep Blacks in the Ghetto, on Welfare, and voting Democrat!

Yonkers, New York
04 May 2008

I should be abundantly clear to millions of Americans by now that Barack Obama's reputation for intellectual brilliance and oratorical prowess has been overly exaggerated by his own campaign and by a gullible mainstream media.

It now turns out that Barack Obama is an ordinary mortal with feet of clay.

His dogged refusal to not only denounce but disown quickly enough his radioactive anti-white and anti-America spiritual mentor and close friend for 20 years, Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr., is proof that Obama sorely is wanting in good sense and good judgment.

He practically self-destructed when he tried to justify his refusal to do so by saying that he "could no more disown Rev. Wright than he could disown his white grandmother who feared blacks."

Such utter lack of good sense and good judgment is not a failing which the American people will take kindly to in a person who seeks the presidency of these United States.

Patrick:

Hillary Clinton could be smeared just as easily with Islamophobic rhetoric if the system decided she had to go. Huma Abedin, her closest aide and constant traveling companion, is Muslim, was raised in Saudi Arabia and speaks fluent Arabic. Her mother is currently a professor at an Islamic women's college in Saudi Arabia and her father was a Wahhabi Muslim, which, if you recall, is the sect that Osama bin Laden belongs to and which spawned al Qaeda.

esther stern:

very funny - especially the one about the neds

jimbo:

Hillary Clinton has alot of faults and of course she has made enemies in her many years in politics. Nevertheless she is alot more qualified than Obama to be President. She has served as First Lady for 8 years and if any of you think that she didnt learn anything in those 8 years and after traveling to 80 countries then you need some therapy. She has worked on the Senate Armed Services committee and she pushed through a bill to FINALLY help the returning Vets that Bush ignored. She helped womens rights in China when she gave a magnificent speech there. She has worked on other legilsation tirelessly and she is well respected in the U.S Senate. Her opponent, Mr Obama has done nothing of worth in either illinois or Washington. He criticizes government and keeps TALKING about change. Why didnt he try to change it in his years in Washington- he has beena big part of that crowd that he criticizes. He offers Change and hope and he talks talks tlaks. Well talk is cheap. Obamas actions show that he cannot be trusted. His associates are vile racists, his wife calls Americans mean and says she is ashamed of being an American. Obama has terrorist cousins in the Middle East and has a billionaire backer in Iraq helping him. His ties with slumlord Rezko left many poor people starving and shivering in Chicago. Obama is not even fit to obtain a security clearance to enter the White House. If you vote for this fraud we are in big trouble.

Anonymous:

"In the coming few days Obama will have to spend valuable time and energy proving to them (all over again) that he does not share his pastor's vision"

But the problem is, that this is a close long time relationship. And when one considers Michelle Obama's words, "I'n not proud of America. . . . " and, Obama's race-baiting the Clinton campaign, accusing good people of playing race cards . . . a la Rev. Wright -- that Obama shared many of his parstor's views makes perfect since.

Patrick:

Her dream week would quickly come crashing down to reality if her own Jeremiah Wright -- Huma Abedin -- were put under the same microscope Barack Obama's personal connections are being examined with.

tydicea:

With friends like the good Rev. Wright, Obama got a necessary lesson in what to expect from his enemies. He had a terrible week, no doubt about. But he is less scarred than many thought possible. Clinton will trip up herself, some where. It is a common hazard of those who lie a lot.

Chuck Hastings:

I'm an old (72) honky. My father was a UCC minister for 55 years, and I've attended UCC churches since childhood. I've also supported Barack Obama ever since he came on the political scene, as a breath of fresh air and a voice of reason. I still do. Rev. Wright is saying to the world "I made Barack Obama, and I can break him."

Wright was recruited to speak at the Press Club by a strong supporter of Hillary Clinton, Ms. Barbara Reynolds. That says it all.

When is the national UCC going to reject foaming-at-the-mouth nonsense like the U.S. Government inventing the AIDS virus? Wright has done much good in his long career, but his kamikaze attack on Obama now threatens to undo all of it. I call on him now to retire to his new million-dollar house, and SHUT UP.

candide:

Here in Georgia Barack won the Democratic primary but there is no way in hell he could win in November. I was thinking of supporting him until I realized that Michelle still supported Wright and his outlandish views. Obama picked the wrong preacher and the wrong wife. How can we expect him to do better in the White House?

Arminius:

Voltaire,
Good name for a reply to Candide's bigotry.

Candide,
I live in Georgia, I know your kind, and despise them. Best reply to your stone-age beliefs was a sign held by a black woman protesting a KKK march: "KKK: Drag Queens from Outer Space".

Arminius

center:

Candide racism reminds me of the 'situational' morality of Hillary; it is vulgar.

Obama's bid for the US Presidency says a great deal about the decency of the people in the US.

Candide and people like Candide should go back into their holes.

voltaire:

Thanks for your comments, Candide. Always nice to hear from the mouth-breathing, racist hillbillies out there.

Ned X:

I am stunned. This is the first lucid column you have written. I totally agree. I am seeing past the cover of your book.

Amy:

I'm not much like Ned, but I hate that sort of stuff too. Religion & politics shouldn't mix.

candide:

Nothing racist about pointing out that Michelle Obama is the evil witch in the Obama campaign who has singlehandedly sunk Obama. She is an angry black woman, black women are angry either because they have to support worthless black men from the cradle to the grave or because affirmative action is used to deny their abilities. Michelle didn't think much of this country until it allowed her husband to dream of becoming president, then it was a country to be proud of, not before. She has refused to repudiate Wright, largely because she is the one who has made the family connection with Wright so close. When I say we don't want to see her walking on the carpet in the White House with her big black bare feet: that's a metaphor for the harm she has done and continues to do.

Neal Obstat:

To Candide: Michelle Obama was "walking barefoot in her big black bare feet on the White House carpet"? Your racism is showing. And that's the problem with Obama's candidacy: America's racism won't allow it to elect a black man as president. White men simply won't vote for Obama. Oh, some will, but he will never be able to carry a majority of the white male vote. The Rev. Wright fiasco is just what they were looking for: a trumped up example of the unsuitability of a black man as president. As a WaPo columnist put it, Wright has been Willie Hortonized. Predictable.

Calling it:

Unfortunately, Obama's elitism shimmered forth with his "bitter" remark. Comments analogizing mandatory health care to requiring houses for all homeless people didn't help either.

One doesn't know someone as intimately as Obama knew Wright without knowing of his relation with Farrakhan, the famous epidemiologist.

Obama's own ego got in his way. He simply never imagined that the Rev's need for the spotlight might crowd him some day.

That day has come.

GeorgiaSon:

Why hasn't one of Wright's most far-reaching assertions received more attention? That's the one in which he asserted that black peoples' brains function differently than white peoples'. The cognitive functions of the two groups are different, and they learn differently. Surely this has profound implications for our future.

dcp:

Candide, this wasn't even about Michelle. So your assessment of her in the vein of Don Imus was quite ignorant and could even be read as offensive. But you are right about one thing: the Democratic Party is in shambles. This is because one big, bad wolf (Hillary) ran into another big, bad wolf (Obama) instead of the three little pigs she thought she was going to get. Both are unelectable. This isn't even a race we're watching. This is cocaine-induced dog fighting, and the cocaine is pure, unadulterated power.

candide:

Obama's rejection of Wright seems too little, too late. His wife's attitude seems even worse --she wants to talk about something else, like children! Of the two I suspect it is Michelle who was and is the most taken with Rev. Wright. She seems to be an angry woman and having her as first lady might be too much for many of us. Look at the scene: walking barefoot in her big black bare feet on the White House carpet. She may have been to Princeton and Harvard but she still acts like she's in the hood.

In any case, neither Obama not Clinton can win in November. The poohbahs of the Democratic Party need to get together and find someone else, perhaps Biden or Dodd. They committed near suicide by not heading Barack Obama off at the pass.
