mohammed:

i had sex with your pig named allah yesterday. then i killed him and made a bunch of spareribs.

Hi. I just wanted to tell you folks, that allah, the worm who likes to be called a god, is just satan in a nice, pink tu-tu.

Learn. Satan wanted to be god, and went to war against God to steal the throne. God laughed, and threw satan where folks? To the earth. Satan got to the earth, and guess what. He still wanted to be a god. So satan took the name of many gods. Allah is one of the god names allah took.

Oh, here, I will prove that satan is allah. Here is what the quran, the muslim bible says, know the worm allah and hear him oink.

From the pagan, unholy qur'an, surah 33:60, “Truly, if the Hypocrites (non-muslims, atheists, christians and Jews), those in whose hearts is a disease,... Whenever they are found, THEY SHALL BE SEIZED AND SLAIN without mercy—a fierce slaughter—MURDERED, a horrible murdering.

From the pagan, unholy qur'an, surah 5.33, “THEY (Non-muslims, atheists, christians and Jews especially) SHOULD BE MURDERED OR CRUCIFIED OR THEIR HANDS AND THEIR FEET SHOULD BE CUT OFF on opposite sides...”

Those are just 2 of hundreds of things the unholy quran, an evil book of evil 'idiots', says to murder people. God said "Do not murder." Allah said, MURDER! God said, "Do not steal." Allah tells his muslims to steal from their betters, the infidels, all the time. And islam says that women are, and I quote, "Stupid". Here is what it says.

Tabari I:280 “Allah said, ‘It is My obligation to make Eve bleed once every month as she made this tree bleed. I must also make Eve stupid, although I created her intelligent.’ Because Allah afflicted Eve, all of the women of this world menstruate and are stupid.”

I realize that there are not many men in today's America. But I sure would love to see 'men' standing up to defend their daughters, their wives, their mothers from islam. But then there is a reality. "That would take men."

Oh, by the way, has anyone seen my pet pig named allah? Call me if you do? Thanks.

A Christian:

A Muslim is a Muslim, and a true believer in the Koran. ALL who TRULY believe in the Koran have ALWAYS believed in "...Death to the infidel...". That has NOT and WILL NOT change, simply because some random scholars and leaders say they believe differently.

The Koran is QUITE specific in this regard. Period.

And, incidentally, Barak Obama is a MUSLIM, despite his claims of Western schooling, etc. He's a MUSLIM, or he has renounced his faith--a TRUE Muslim CANNOT be both a Muslim, & a Christian, Jew, nor ANY OTHER believer---that's it.
And , no proclaiming otherwise will change that fact. Also, the Arab Nations have been fighting one another for centuries--CENTURIES !! Does ANY person with ANY intelligence really believe American $$$ HAVE, or ever WILL change that ??

Get real, folks--the Arabs ALL seek one goal--domination--Period. And, all opinions, conferences, rulings, laws, concessions, etc., will NOT change this fact. All one has to do is look to History--it's ALL there. One day it's Iran that's the American ally, the next, it's Iraq. Then Pakistan, and on and on. Who's really kidding whom ??

This is written by a student of History, NOT a radical, hate-mongering, racist. Simply a man of peace, who reads and understands History.

Branding Islam:

I was almost baptized to Christianity listening from a young Mormon. I was charmed about the beauty of Christianity- "turn the other chick" and all the love about Jesus - how he crucified for our "sin".

I never felt so engrained until 911, I never knew violent verses in the Quran, I never knew Mohammed (PBUH) was a pedophile, I never knew Islam is all about Jihad and 'slain infidels'. Today, Muslims are connoted to 'Terrorist', thanks to NEO-CONS! Its hard for me to say 'Proud to be a Muslim'?

Read this:

"Samuel 15:2-3 Thus saith the Lord of hosts ... go and smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare him not; but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass."

Sounds like Quranic verse, not really! This is from Bible. If you do your own homework, you find violence and disparity in every religious book, Bible, Torah, Geeta, Grantha Sahib etc.

As a Muslim, we need to re-brand Islam. We need to spread hope and good news from the Quranic text. Out of Sixty Seven Thousands verses, sixty thousand verses shows the modality of God's virtue, humanity and justice.

Today young Muslims are very perplexed. We need to find our true religion with positive vibe. In this information age, branding is very important part of the message. Muslims need to speak louder, silence is not a choice.

Peace,

Nazim:

Mr. Harris asked: "In predominantly Muslim countries,it is only the non-Muslims who have the freedom of religion; freedom to convert to Islam."

Not being a scholar myself but a practicing American Muslim, who does not share the tribal ideology of: I support Muslims right or wrong; or I support America right or wrong (following rather the Qur'anic injunction of stand up for justice even if it AGAINST YOURSELF and PARENTS and COMMUNITY), I do observe the many hypocracy of so-called "Muslim nations."

I however, do not associate their behavior with being 'Islamic.'

For example, if the holy Qur'an says: Thou shall not kill. And thou shall not do xina (pornography, adultery, etc), and then you have Muslims in "Muslim countries" doing just that (killing each other for political gain/power, and downloading pornography at the highest levels)...they are contravening the normative Islamic tradition.

That argument therefore doesn't follow to mean Islam allows murder, violence, and ability not to leave the faith ("Will ye oh Muhammad make them believe when it is God who knows whether they believe or not?") when some Muslims do behave criminally and act outside the accordance of their faith? As any person doing things contradicting the teaching of their faith. Thus it is a human problem to err, not a religious one!

So in short, do not assume by the actions of some Muslims or Muslim nations nowadays as being true and perfect examples of teachings of God or Islam. For perfection only belongs to the Lord, and he knows just how deeply in hot water so many "so-called Muslim countries" and their corrupt leaders are in.

As I always say, in many ways Western nations esp. the Nordic countries, Canada, and to some extent the United States are doing much better in following the very basic injunctions of the rules of God, than those nations predominated by Muslims.

As one Shaykh Abdul Rauf quoted the Prophet Muhammad as saying: Authentic Islam will rise from the West itself.

Peace.

I hope my answer was of help in your quest to understand my faith a little better.

Thank You.

Nazim:

Salam (peace),

Although I undertand these are the "hot button issues" and topics generally asked by non-Muslims of Muslim scholars, I would have liked answers to more non-controversial topics...so to give a more holistic and comprehensive understanding of Islam and what Muslims believe.

In any case, my deepest appreciation and gratitude for Ms. Sally Quinn and WashingtonPost/Newsweek for doing this weekly segment.

It goes a long way in breaking down undue stereotypes and fosters understanding to a faith that is still greatly misunderstood by a majority of Americans and Westerners according to a recent Pew poll.

Kudos.

Averell Harris:

In predominantly Muslim countries,it is only the non-Muslims who have the freedom of religion; freedom to convert to Islam. As far as the oft quoted phrase" no compulsion in religion", their whole institutional setup is geared to force people to convert to Islam. The inordinately high "head" taxes on non-Muslims as well as the restrictions in worship and work as well as social ostricising are their creative ways to achieve that aim.
Women in Islam are considered "unclean" and treated as a third class citizens, and nothing they can say would change this reality.
Jihad is an exhortation by their Prophet, whom they talke to be the model for human behavior, to fight the "unbelievers till they believe in Allah and His Messenger".

Robert Scribner:

1. what is jehad ,answer ,an act of absolute ignorance , people from the beginning of time have been taken in by an idea the examples are so numerous, but the idea of the third rights final solution comes to mind as most exageratedly obvious ,whare an inteligent industrious educated people were drawn to an idea so absurd it is seen by most as insane but these people were not insane .Not that ,that is an excuse for the actions . The people of the Jehad will pay a price beyond any cost for thair sick idea, and as usual the working classes will bair the load and tradgy. Perhaps it is the Leming factor.Gandi had the only right idea in a long time unfortunately..

Jay Deal:

Muslims say one thing and do another. Tell me why the media in general and Newsweek in particular doesn't take Muslims to task for the intolerance and hate that permiate Islamic societies? In the US, Muslims appear to say that they want us to hear; in countries where they dominate, that say and do differently. In Islamic societies, basic human rights, freedom of religion and the ideal of equality are not respected. Why should anybody believe them? Why don't they talk about the hate and violence in the Quran or the many evil deeds recorded about their prophet, from their own traditions (ahadith)?

Thank you.

J. Deal

Jim Walker:

I am sorry you did not ask a fourth question about the possible links and conflicts between Islam and democracy. Relgious belief, broadly defined, played a major role in shaping American Democracy. This has been noted by scholars of many policitical persuasions from DeToqueville to today. It strikes me a odd, that as we try to "export" democracy to other countries we do not take into account their religous beliefs and the ways it might support that effort. We often discuss democracy in economic terms-- i.e. does it require a "middle class" to succeed but rarely discuss it in relgious terms relevant to the countries where we seek to plant the "seed of democracy." I hope that this can be covered in future dicussions.

Mohammad Ali Khan:

1. WHAT IS JIHAD? UNDER WHAT CONDITIONS DOES ISLAM SANCTION THE USE OF VIOLENCE? WHAT WOULD YOU TELL SUICIDE BOMBERS WHO INVOKE ISLAM TO JUSTIFY THEIR ACTIONS?

2. HOW DOES ISLAM DEFINE APOSTASY? IS IT PERMISSIBLE FOR A MUSLIM TO CONVERT TO ANOTHER FAITH? HOW CAN LAWS AGAINST APOSTASY AND BLASPHEMY BE RECONCILED WITH THE KORANIC INJUNCTION OF "NO COMPULSION IN RELIGION"?

3. WHAT ARE THE RIGHTS OF WOMEN IN ISLAM? HOW DOES ISLAM'S VIEW OF MALE-FEMALE EQUALITY DIFFER FROM THE WESTERN VIEW?

Instead of asking us these questions, wouldn't it be better if you sponsor a conference of religious scholars, and have them reach a consensus on these issues?

GUparent:

I think other issues that could be addressed are:

1.Could someone discuss the difference between the Mecca Verses and the Madinah Verses, and the revelations which were situation specific (i.e., conditions of war or behavior for the beleagued Muslim community at the time of the Prophet) and those revelations which are not situation specific and address greater issues? If I am correct, that should address some of the confusion about exhortations to violence and commands to maintain the peace.

2.Because Muslims believe that the Qur'an is the literal Word of God, does that mean they must read it literally?

Cherif El-Ayouty:

Moderation was the core of Islam for over 1400 years. Islamic extremism is hardly 25 years old. The leaders of that movement discovered that violence based on their own interpretation of the Koran was a great tool for achieving their goals. At the same time the traditional leaders of Islam were not equipped to contain the new movement.

The counteraction to such movement is to strongly push the principle that many of Koran's injunctions were never meant to be followed beyond specific periods of time. Furthermore, Muslims who are part of the Western civilization must use their influence to convince the extremists and their sympathizers that it is simply not possible in today's world to insist on invoking interpretations of some of Koran's injunctions which are completely incompatible with the fundamentals used today to secure the advancement of societies and their wellbeing.

Anonymous:

DOES ISLAM TEACH AND ENCOURAGE LYING?

Cherif El-Ayouty:

Apostasy, like many other Koranic injunctions, was meant for a defined period of time. It was forbidden when Islam in its infancy was fighting for its existence and every runaway Muslim soldier was considered a deserter to be punished by death as he was compromising the Muslim armies of that time.
Deserters in any Muslim or Christian army today are subject to the same punishment in a war situation.

The matter today is that Islam is not at war and its existence is not threatened. A peaceful civilian Muslim doesn't compromise Islam in any way if he decides to change his or her faith.

Cherif El-Ayouty:

Last year a prominent French author described the Koran as a supermarket where every Muslim can find what is suitable to help himself with in accordance to his needs, environment and culture. Subsequently, a fatwa was issued that the author should be killed for his "blasphemy" since the Koran must be followed whole and not piecemeal. He lives today under a cover identity with police protection.

My question for the suicide bombers: Aren't you using the Koran exactly in the same context as the French author suggested when you are choosing to interpret from it what justifies your actions while ignoring the other citations in the Koran that are clearly meant to forbid your endeavor?
