For real clarity, there is nothing superior to the original sources. The Compendium of Islamic Texts at USC-MSA has three parallel Qur'an translations and four major Hadith collections. Everyone should read Surahs 4,8,9,33, 47,48&64 and Sahih Bukhari Books 52 & 53. You can find them with your favorite search engine, and there are direct links on my web page.

WaPo, can we please get someone else to give us info on Islam. Esposito is a suadi funded hack. and while he is certainly well read, he doenst comprehend much. after all isnt he the scholar that argued bin-landed was a boogy man hyped up by the west. in the summer of 2001. someone reading this list of books he recomends would come away with similar ideas about other potential bin-landens that are running around.
