I'm not sure if this is suppose to be a rhetorical question. Clearly, most Americans believe that being American is more than being part of a political arrangement. In my mind the question is "Can Islam exists within the American (or Western) culture?" Islamic countries are obviously hostile to non-Islamic cultures within their borders; so can Muslims participate within a liberal Western culture?
