BOSTON -- Steven Maki threads his way between men and women clad in dark wool coats and carrying bags of Christmas gifts. He is under-dressed for Newbury Street, one of Boston’s high-rent shopping districts, stocked with $10,000 couture dresses, expensive hotels and soft Italian leather shoes.
Maki glances around, looking into corners and doorways.
At 31, he looks a little like a kid. He is small. He wears a thin beard, a nylon parka, dark pants, and sensible shoes. His bangs cut straight across his forehead. A silver stud pierces his right eyebrow. There is a hoop in his left ear. If you look past the piercings, you’ll notice that around his neck is the white collar of an Episcopal priest.
The Rev. Steven Maki, as he is properly known, has been on the job about one month, ministering to the homeless on the streets of Boston. He grew up in the Bay State and has recently come home after a stint in a small parish in Newfoundland, Canada.
Maki’s church is the city of Boston, its alleyways and sidewalks and doorways and parks. His job starts at 9 a.m., the moment he walks out the door toward the offices of Ecclesia Ministries on Newbury Street, nearly Copley Square and the Boston Common. On a cold day, when many of his parishioners have taken refuge from the cold inside shelters, Maki may speak to nine or 10 people. When the weather is fair, he’s likely to talk to 40 homeless men and women.
“There’s a woman here who makes about $70 a day,” says Maki, pointing at an empty spot on the sidewalk near an exclusive men’s clothing store.
Her name is Laura, and she makes pretty good money because she is charming and pleasant, he tells me. The aggressive panhandlers, while they may need the money, make less.
But Maki says even Laura can’t get off the streets because the money she makes is not sustainable. It’s not steady enough to pay rent or utilities or any number of expenses that go along with renting housing in a city like Boston.
To walk with Maki through the streets of Boston is to notice details one would normally not see – a shopping cart filled with bags and boxes. A wood-handled black umbrella tucked against the wall between a drug store and a Starbuck's.
“That shopping cart’s been there all day,” he says, looking around but not able to connect it to any of the homeless people on that block.
Maki characterizes his job as listening, giving comfort and reaching out to the men and women who most need it.
“I think some people get the impression that I’m out there evangelizing, I’m there to convert them,” he says. “I’m coming from ‘You are a child of God. You are right with God’.”
Maki says he wants to be a pastoral presence, to offer prayers but not to sell religion.
In his previous work, he was a mental health counselor. Many he worked with were homeless. Homeless people could end up on the street because they fell on hard times, but chances are they might also be addicted to drugs or alcohol, or have mental health problems. He doesn’t want to sugarcoat it. He said some panhandlers go directly to the liquor store and buy alcohol with the money they receive from passersby. Others, like Laura, will save it for an apartment they may never get or may not be able to keep.
The work of a street minister, Maki would say, is to help in the healing of humanity, to look in the eye human beings who hundreds of people walk by every day without ever really seeing.
A normal day for him and other street ministers at Ecclesia includes checking in with people around Copley Square and Boston Common, just saying hello, asking them where they slept the night before.
On the surface, it’s casual. The male and female ministers dress in jeans and slacks. They watch the street. They notice who is there and who is not there. They look for the signs of homelessness – a lot of bags, worn shoes, weather-chapped and reddened hands, missing or bad teeth, well-worn or dirty clothing.
A typical exchange might include asking how a person is doing, where they slept, if they’re warm enough. If they’re outside in freezing weather, he might try to get them inside. Sometimes the ministry gets them bus rides home to a loved one. Or ministers let them use their cell phones to call their doctor or a friend.
Maki offer prayers, transportation passes, gift certificates for Dunkin' Donuts or other food, but he and his colleagues never give out cash. Nor do they require religious conversion or even praying, although Maki finds many of the homeless he meets were raised in some kind of faith and take comfort from prayers or from the sacraments, which he is ordained to give.
“I think one of the most healing things we do is to lift up humanity, to see them as sacred.”
He carries oil to anoint the sick. In a pocket, he keeps a small, round gold box with a black and white drawing of a suffering Christ wearing a crown of thorns. Inside are the hosts he uses when he gives Communion to those in crisis.
“I’ve had Communion on the sidewalk with my scarf as a tablecloth,” he says.
He also attends the weekly homeless Common Art show, at which homeless men and women sell their art in the gallery of a church on Newberry Street. There, homeless people come inside, eat and get warm while shoppers browse paintings, beadwork and other art projects.
For the most part, Maki says, he is received well on the street. Some find out he’s not going to give them money and they want nothing to do with him. Others wave him away if it’s during peak hours for panhandling – when employees downtown are entering or leaving work.
One man he approaches is sitting on the sidewalk near the Back Bay train station with his hood up over his head, rattling a cup and asking for change.
Maki walks up and introduces himself. He has talked with him before. It takes a few seconds for the man to register that Maki is a minister, and the man shakes his head no.
“Now’s not the time,” he says urgently, looking around him at the men and women in business suits, slacks and full-length coats walking past. “Maybe when I’m done panhandling.”
The man isn’t rude about it, and Maki smiles and nods graciously as he moves on. Being turned away is also part of the job. Homeless people have their spots, and this man will be back in his tomorrow or maybe the next day.
He will check in again.
At the end of the day, Maki says he often goes home and meditates on what he has learned. Tonight, he will think about the homeless man he offered a bronze Ecclesia cross to this morning. The cross is worn by members of the community, as a reminder of Jesus’s suffering and that this is a community, that people here care for and watch out for one another.
Maki said the man declined. I’ve got my own cross to bear, he said, pointing to the many bags he carries with him every day.

Of course, there's nothing a good conspiracy theory likes more than astronomical odds, but that could be a positive thing. Contemplating the possibility of contamination forces people to confront questions of environmentalism in space: what's our responsibility to non-Earthly life?

I've heard a lot about them, apparently it's a real penny stock, one that could go to over 1 dollar. I'm probably going to buy $1000 worth on monday. What I love about stocks like this is there is almost no risk. But a possiblity that it could change your life if it takes off at all.

There will always be exceptions, in the same way some non-tattooed people might say tattooed people are drop outs, I'm fairly sure we're not haha.
Recently I discovered a rant on quite a respected figure in the tattoo community's Myspace. I say rant, it was more like pure venomous hatred.
It would seem that some find young people with visible ink, impatient and disrespectful, and they must all just think it's cool to have visible work.
I'm 23, My first tattoo was on my shoulder, then my wrists, then I got a full sleeve. Then I moved to my hands, then neck and I also have a large part of my leg tattooed.
It took me about two years to get the opportunity to get my hand tattooed by my idol, and then my neck by an artist I greatly admire, a lot of time, effort and thought was put into both of these.
Even though I'm somewhat older and do have a fair bit of coverage, I might still be classed as young and "under-tattooed" to have such visible work, and I can't help but think that's kinda crazy!
Sure I've seen some 18 year olds with kanji on their necks or poorly executed skulls on their hands, and you can almost tell they rushed into it, wanting everyone to see their new work as clearly as possible, and fine that to me is impatient and maybe even attention seeking.
Basically what I'm trying to say is that not everyone who has visible work is disrespectful to the art, some people invest a great deal of time, money and effort into getting that particular location inked with the highest standard work possible.
It's kinda funny to find prejudice within a community that tries so hard to divert it away from itself.

Aeroponics is similar to hydroponics but instead of submerging the roots in a liquid, a fog or mist of the nutrient solution is sprayed over the root system. This has the advantage of minimizing water usage as well as giving the roots ample access to oxygen. Aeroponics have been given special attention from NASA since a mist is easier to handle than a liquid in a zero gravity environment.

I appreciate your criticisms, but consider that you may be missing my point.
Just as any law case has two aspects, substantive and procedural, any piece of writing also has two aspects:
(1) what is being written about [substance] and
(2) how, and how well, the piece is written, which involves factual accuracy, correct use of language, spelling, style, and impact on the reader.
Note that I never mentioned Mr. Maki's wonderful work, which I think is marvelous. Did I have to?
Show me where in the heavens it's written that I have to comment on the substance of a piece of writing, rather than commenting on the nature and quality of the writing as a piece of writing.
I grew up in Boston, so it grated when Newbury Street was misspelled "Newberry".
Also, as any English teacher (or lawyer) will tell you, if a writer gets basic things like spelling wrong, she arouses in the reader's mind the thought that she may not know what what [substantively] she's writing about. Effective persuasion is in the details of the writing itself.
I admit that the bit about Mr. Maki's proper title was a bit over the top for most people, but Herb found it of interest and made appropriate and interesting comments about it.
When a civilization goes downhill it starts by fraying at the edges, one manifestation of which is its citizens not knowing or caring how to use language correctly.

Fr. Maki's good work is part of his vocation and not, strictly speaking, volunteering. [I await the cries of rage and and anguish over that statement!] In the 40+ years I practiced my vocation, sometimes in ways not too different from Fr. Maki, I also helped people.
As for volunteering in a physical-labor way, in the winter of 1957-1958 I was working on a kibbutz in the Negev. [I mention this because of your kind "Shalom".]
Knowing I was not Jewish, the kibbutzniks assumed I was Christian [which I wasn't, though my ancestors were] and kindly said I could take Chrismas Day off. Thinking "When in Rome, do as the Romans do", I spent the day stacking feed bags, which is quite hard work - does that improve my standing with any of you physical-labor-volunteering buffs?

I know that "evangelize" and "convert" are now dirty, non-PC words in the minds of some.... but Jesus didn't go around saying everyone was automatically a "child of God" and "right with God". Quite the opposite - He was sent precisely because we're not right with God, and have the right to become His children only through faith (or "conversion"), only because of His work on the cross. (see John chapters 1 and 3)
Good works, such helping the homeless and hungry, are honorable and necessary endeavors - my church and I are active in them ourselves. But doing these things (with or without a white collar) doesn't change clear Biblical teaching, nor does it in itself change people's eternal spiritual status. Only Christ does. The Rev. should continue the true works but leave out the false teaching.

Thanks for the historical references to earlier editions of the AHD. They make the case for your comment that language changes constantly. I grew up in a German Lutheran parsonage during and after WWII, and my father was never referred to as "The Rev.," or "The Rev. Mr." but only as "Rev. " As it happens, my wife is also a Lutheran pastor, and I have never heard or seen the term "The Rev. Ms./Miss/Mrs." but only "Rev." However, Google gives 6200 hits for "Rev. Ms." as a collocation vs. 120,000 for "Rev. Mr." I can't check for "the Rev. Mr." because Google won't search on "the." What all of this suggests in terms of language change (part of my academic field) is that the use of "Reverend" as an adjective in titles had been replaced by the use of the word as the title itself by the time ordination of women became common practice in such mainline denominations as Lutherans, Methodists, and Episcopalians. The terms "The Rev. Dr." and "Rev. Dr." are still in popular usage, which suggests that "Reverend" maintains its adjectival function in this more specialized case. This is fairly common in historical change in language, that a word will maintain an older function or meaning in certain more specialized uses even if that function has been lost in more common uses.

We all know that language changes all the time, and, in the eyes of people my age in every generation, the changes are almost never for the better.
An example of how things change:
The 6th and latest edition (2006) of The American
Heritage Dictionary of the English Language does not include a "Usage Note" on this question, though the Dictionary has a great many such notes.
The 1st edition of the Dictionary (1969) did have a Usage Note on this issue. That it vanished at some point in the intervening 37 years suggests these possibilities:
**The 2006 Panel couldn't agree;
**The Panel didn't think the question was important enough to discuss;
**The Panel threw up its hands and, abandoning all concern with standards, said: "Let the groundlings have their barbarous speech and be done with it!" [that's my hunch].
Mr. Maki is a priest of the American Episcopal church, the American branch of the Church of England.
As you noted, Herb, "The Rev. Mr. Maki" form is used by the Church of England. (See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Reverend#Anglican_Churches).
To repeat myself, every generation as it ages thinks that usages different from what it learned in youth grate on the ear and are wrong and ignorant.
I was taught that "The Reverend Mr. Maki" is THE CORRECT form and I'll die believing that.
BTW, let me quote from the '69 edition's usage note:
"REVEREND, as a title is an adjective, not a noun, and thus is properly preceded by THE in formal usage...."
[In writing, second and subsequent references to the clergyman] "the proper form is THE REV. MR. HAMES (not REV. HAMES or merely the REVEREND) according to 63% of the Panel.
"As a form of address in speech, the term REVEREND unaccompanied by a name, is considered impolite."

A few weeks ago, when Hillary Clinton came to town, I was going back to my car when I came up on a homeless woman walking with a cane & crying. I gave her a lift. She told me bits & pieces of her life - how her children don't want to have anything to do with her, she has cancer, a bad knee, she had no money & no heat in the room her daughter was generously letting her stay in until she got a check that weekend & could find a place to stay. She had gone to find a man who'd helped her before, but a guard had run her off, she was crying. I took her to the free food kitchen at the local Presbyterian church & left $10 with them to buy her some kerosene to heat her room.
I didn't know how much of her story to believe, until I talked to a local policeman who deals with the homeless & the soup kitchen director who knew her. She does have lung cancer. I don't know if she was living with her daughter, but she does have one. The policeman said he'd look into it & get back to me, but he never did.
I felt her fear, her hopelessness. I wanted to help her. I also felt a sense that I'm not that far from being like her as I used to think. I could become homeless. It doesn't take all that much to destroy everything a person has.
We give our children too much. We should have to start out in life with almost nothing, work for all we get. We need to know how it feels to have almost nothing.

The title form "The Rev. Mr." is Church of England usage, in Britain and elsewhere in the Commonwealth. It is not standard American usage, although it is found occasionally in very formal usage.
By the way, I have taught English at the college level for 40 years, and never have I seen your usage judgment cited in a style manual as the only correct form.

This was a moving article. There, on the streets of Boston, goes a true Christian and a remarkable human being. I happen to be Episcopal, and the Rev'd Maki is an inspiration that makes me proud of my religion. By the way, Episcopalians very, very seldom go around trying to convert others, no matter where they are or what they are doing.
Norrie - I have never seen 'Mr' inserted in the title of a priest or minister - new to me. But it kinda seems like 'Dr Mr John Smith'. Oh, well.

Helping the Homeless is a hot item among media these days, and so it should be. In New York City a young and ambitious Greek man has established a very successful program called Pathways to Housing. In Detroit many churches have established 'Warming Centers", where meals, a shower, a clean and warm bed, and laundry are offered. There is no more worthy calling than to serve the poor. I visited Boston for the first time last January while our daughter was competing in figure skating and I was in that general area.
I am touched by your article and the Rev. Maki. Although I am not of his faith tradition, I certainly think he is doing the Lord's work every day in this ministry.
We are all blessed to read about someone like him especially at Christmas time.

Thank God this minister gets it. He apparently has great compassion and is learning about suffering ad sacrifice.
The only way to help many people in need, such as the homeless, is to get close. Only through such interaction can you begin to understand.
Many simply need a friend. That is a start.
He gets paid to do what he does; what about the rest of us? You don't have to work for an organization and just giving money is too easy.
Each of us must begin by finding one...making friends, and helping where you can. Then two...three...
It only works if we share the love by touching each other one on one.
It helps if you are inspired by faith and follow the example of Jesus who said, "what you do to the least of these, my brethren you do to me."

Great article. Thank you; it was a lovely and important way to start the day. God is with this pastor and with every one of the men and women he meets on the street. As the pastor points out, many are out there due to alcohol/drug abuse and/or mental illness. Decades ago families took care of their own. Now it's sadly uncommon for extended families to feel the obligation to be there for their loved ones. And, of course, some families tried but were simply unsuccessful thru no fault of their own. There will always be the poor, the lost and the lonely, but the pastor is living proof that each one of us can make a difference. I shall spend Christmas afternoon away from my husband and children, bringing Communion to 13 residents of a nursing home who may or may
