What are Holy Texts of Mormonism?

Like other branches of Christianity, Mormons regard the Bible as a core text, but Mormonism (also known as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) centers on a supplemental work called the Book of Mormon.

First published in 1830 by Joseph Smith, Mormonism's founder, the Book of Mormon recounts how God commanded Lehi, a prophet living in Jerusalem around 600 BCE, to lead a small group of Hebrews to the American continent. There, Christ appeared to the descendants of the Hebrews after his resurrection several hundred years later to deliver his final testament and establish his true ministry. These events, compiled from ancient records, were inscribed on gold plates by a prophet named Mormon, then buried for safekeeping in what is today New York state by Mormon's son, Moroni. According to the Mormon tradition, in 1823 Moroni appeared to Smith as an angel and disclosed the hiding place of the plates, which Smith then translated into the Book of Mormon.

Two additional works, both authored by Smith, are considered sacred by Mormons. One, the Doctrine and Covenants, is a set of revelations and divinely inspired edicts, including messages and warnings directed at both Mormons and humankind generally. The other, the Pearl of Great Price, is a collection of Smith's writings on faith and church doctrine, such as his translations and revisions of certain books of the Bible.

Together these four works constitute the foundation of the Mormon faith.

Google Book of Abraham and see what the prophet wrought. JSmith was caught with his pants down more than once. Most of his prophesies proved false. He coerced a 13 year old girl in to sex. He had 5 distinct and differing version of his supposed vision, which he did not even mention to his family for years. He is a proven liar who preached institutionalized adultery will get you into the highest place in heaven. Most mormons are nice folks but totally and willingly ignorant of their own church history. Scary. Sad. A bargain with the devil.

Clint Hollomon:

So where are these golden plates which only one man had the power to translate? Bring them out in the open & let the scolars of today examine them.
Are they truely locked away? If so, Why? Are the Mormons fearful they would be exposed as false or do they even exsist?
Are all these revalations from the early leaders or are they they biggest deception by a "religion"?
If all this is true let the Mormons open the door to their "temple" in Salt Lake for examination of these "truths".

In addition to Joseph Smith, eleven others signed their signature as witness to the Gold Plates.

THE TESTIMONY OF THREE WITNESSES
Be it known unto all nations, kindreds, tongues, and people, unto whom this work shall come: That we, through the grace of God the Father, and our Lord Jesus Christ, have seen the plates which contain this record, which is a record of the people of Nephi, and also of the Lamanites, their brethren, and also of the people of Jared, who came from the tower of which hath been spoken. And we also know that they have been translated by the gift and power of God, for his voice hath declared it unto us; wherefore we know of a surety that the work is true. And we also testify that we have seen the engravings which are upon the plates; and they have been shown unto us by the power of God, and not of man. And we declare with words of soberness, that an angel of God came down from heaven, and he brought and laid before our eyes, that we beheld and saw the plates, and the engravings thereon; and we know that it is by the grace of God the Father, and our Lord Jesus Christ, that we beheld and bear record that these things are true. And it is marvelous in our eyes. Nevertheless, the voice of the Lord commanded us that we should bear record of it; wherefore, to be obedient unto the commandments of God, we bear testimony of these things. And we know that if we are faithful in Christ, we shall rid our garments of the blood of all men, and be found spotless before the judgment-seat of Christ, and shall dwell with him eternally in the heavens. And the honor be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost, which is one God. Amen.

THE TESTIMONY OF EIGHT WITNESSES
Be it known unto all nations, kindreds, tongues, and people, unto whom this work shall come: That Joseph Smith, Jun., the translator of this work, has shown unto us the plates of which hath been spoken, which have the appearance of gold; and as many of the leaves as the said Smith has translated we did handle with our hands; and we also saw the engravings thereon, all of which has the appearance of ancient work, and of curious workmanship. And this we bear record with words of soberness, that the said Smith has shown unto us, for we have seen and hefted, and know of a surety that the said Smith has got the plates of which we have spoken. And we give our names unto the world, to witness unto the world that which we have seen. And we lie not, God bearing witness of it.

In a world where even the existence of Jesus Christ is under assault, more then ever do we need the Book of Mormon, a second witness to Jesus Christ.

I thought others might be curious to sample some of these “unfamiliar” works. Here’s a personal favorite from the Pearl of Great Price…

Moses 5: 9 - 12

9 And in that day the Holy Ghost fell upon Adam, which beareth record of the Father and the Son, saying: I am the Only Begotten of the Father from the beginning, henceforth and forever, that as thou hast fallen thou mayest be redeemed, and all mankind, even as many as will.

10 And in that day Adam blessed God and was filled, and began to prophesy concerning all the families of the earth, saying: Blessed be the name of God, for because of my transgression my eyes are opened, and in this life I shall have joy, and again in the flesh I shall see God.

11 And Eve, his wife, heard all these things and was glad, saying: Were it not for our transgression we never should have had seed, and never should have known good and evil, and the joy of our redemption, and the eternal life which God giveth unto all the obedient.

12 And Adam and Eve blessed the name of God, and they made all things known unto their sons and their daughters.
