Barred Scholar to Speak by Satellite

"On Faith" panelist Tariq Ramadan, a Swiss citizen and Islamic scholar, will discuss Islam and the West in three satellite conversations April 10-12 at Georgetown University.

Ramadan, a leading Islamic thinker among Europe’s second- and third-generation Muslim immigrants, has been barred from entering the U.S. since 2004, shortly before he was to start working at the University of Notre Dame. His visa was revoked under the "ideological exclusion" provision of the Patriot Act.

U.S. authorities told Ramadan that they will not issue him a visa because of a contribution he made to an Islamic charitable organization - a group later blacklisted by the U.S. government for providing money to Hamas. Ramadan said he made the donation a year before the organization was blacklisted.

The visa denial is the subject of an ongoing legal challenge brought by the American Civil Liberties Union on behalf of the American Academy of Religion, the American Association of University Professors, and PEN American Center.

Georgetown's Berkley Center for Religion, Peace and World Affairs is sponsoring three conversations with Ramadan by satellite: April 10, Islam and Democracy; April 11, Muslim Minorities in Western Europe; and April 12, Catholic-Muslim Relations.

"Islam-West dialogue is a crucial imperative in today's world. But in order to understand one another we have to listen," said Dr. Thomas Banchoff, Georgetown professor and director of the Berkley Center.

"Thanks to global communications technologies we can engage Ramadan in conversation here in the US, even if he cannot be here in person."

Each conversation will take place from 10:30 a.m. to noon in Gaston Hall on the Georgetown University Campus, 37th and O Sts, NW. All conversations are open to the public.

Read more about Ramadan's ideas, the visa controversy, and submit questions for the conversations.

jacob-so why do eclatarians hate muslims so much then?

The next time George goes overseas we should lock him out. ..... I cannot understand why George has a belly that can tell him who is dangerous and I don't.

Sari:

How did you get on the subject of Israel? This is about a Muslim speaker who could not get a visa. Why do you have to blast Israel and Jews? That's not even the subject matter.

I think it is disgraceful we have not given a visa to Ramadan. I'd like to hear what he has to say.

Lets just all agree that we're counting the days until Bush leaves office. Also...it seems pretty obvious that Jozevz is either a 14 year old kid having fun at the expense of too-serious adults or someone who is short a few marbles....

I think you may be onto something. I Googled Eclatarianism, or "Church of the New Song," and it's a religion started by a couple prisoners as an attempt at circumventing prison discipline: e.g., the practice of their religion requires that the prison give them better food.

I believe "Jozevz" has been jerking our chain.

Huh??

Jozevz,

King David, Yahweh's chosen one, sent a man to battle to die so he could sleep with his wife.

Abraham had concubines as well -- that's how he fathered Ishmael, the father of the Arabs.

Your Islamophobia is unfounded and misguided.

as far as muslim charities go- the muslims of amrica etition the us government at ramadan to find out which charities are acceptable to donate to-
the answer?
all muslim charities are suspect-hence none can be given to without ending up on a watch list-

while its precisely the soical services offered by hamas that made them get elected- this seems to escape coverage-

I have long believed that in the Holy Land, the primary difference between "terrorists" and "soldiers" is the presence of uniforms. If only the ends are being considered, then this holds true. If one considers the means, and grants that the IDF, for the most part, tries to limit civilian casualties, (within their abilities) then the IDF is less terroristic than Hamas. But the problem is, Israel is in power, and they have other means of waging war than simple murder -- for example, economically crippling the Palestinian areas and diverting their water for Israeli settlements and Israeli agriculture.

The US support for Israel involves more than just money and lobbying. The preference most Americans have for one side of a longtime conflict between the Israelis and Palestinians can also be compared to the prevalence of Francophobia in the US. American francophobia is largely fueled by the fact that France's traditional rival, England, has sent large numbers of immigrants to the States in our history. (and laid the groundwork) On the other hand, there have not been similar mass waves of French immigrants -- thus, we feel much "closer" to Britain than France. In the same way, we've had large waves of Jewish immigrants before, after WWII, and as part of the eastern European immigrant waves at the turn of the 20th century. America has never had a similar amount of Arab immigrants, so on top of AIPAC and the ADL's lobbying, there is a built-in sympathy for Israel over Palestine, all other things being equal.

Of course, then again, our sympathy for Israel could just be due to Jews controling the international media and banking system, and all of America's policies actually coming from Tel Aviv...

(And if you believe that, I've got some beachfront property in Arizona to sell you.)

Schmitty:

Well put DC guy, I would like to add that the terror in the land of the Palistinians is on both sides. So why is it that the world powers will fund one side and freeze the assets of the other? Dirty politics is my answer. Plain old greedy dirty politics.

DCGuy:

I'm starting to think that Jozevz might be a 14 year old kid getting his jollies on getting us all riled up. If so, well done young man.

Anyways, back to the task at hand, the problem with the political consciousness that prevails in this country is that a majority see "terrorism" as absolute -- because our primary experience is with al-Qaida, and Qaida IS an absolute terrorist organization. Europe, on the other hand, has been dealing with regional "terrorists", that can be bargained with, for decades -- witness ETA in Spain, the IRA in the UK, etc.

What many people fail to realize is that Hezbollah, Hamas, etc. really DO have charitable wings. This is why even the UK and Australia, 2 of our closest allies, for example, have Hezbollah's military wing listed as a terrorist organization but not its political or charitable wings. It really IS possible to donate to Hamas to support charitable works among the downtrodden Palestinian people. However, in our government's view, giving ANY money to an organization that may be linked to terrorism is equitable with direct support of terrorism. (Which is hypocritical, given the money we've donated in aid to the Palestinian Authority over the years... even though Fatah itself has the Al-Aqsa military wing) I also have to believe that strong pro-Israel lobbying from AIPAC and the ADL lead to this hardline policy as well.

It's a shame that this sort of understanding of the differences between worldwide terrorist networks and those of a more regional nature, who have a tangible political goal, is absent in Washington. Hence, Mr. Ramadan cannot get a visa.

How regrettable and shameful, that the great USA-in fact Cluless Bush representing the grat USA-barres an Swiss scholar-who happened to be a Muslim-from coming to speak-in the best American tradition-on Islam and especially Western Muslims-at Notare dame University. In the mean time Oxford University invited Mr.Ramamdan to make a contributio. the Bush gang does not want the American people to hear the true and civilized face of Islam-instead it wants to show the few extremists so it can continue to sell its false message and strategy of FEAR.

Another proof is the barring and turning of the British pop singer Yousef Islam back and not allwoing him entery into the US? Mr.Islam was totally dedicated to helping in charity work to the Bosnian victims of genocide commtted by the serbs. Unless Mr.Islam music is a threat to US national security.

Would the Bush administration dare to barr a jewish/israeli speaker from enetring the US?
