The theory of the "Just War" is often attributed to the Christian philosopher Augustine, who wrote in his book, City of God, that the wise man "will wage just wars," and that "The injustice of the opposing side is what imposes the duty of waging wars."
But the term's genesis would be more accurately credited to a synthesis of Greek, Roman and Christian thought, with particular influence coming from Augustine, Aristotle and Cicero.
An array of thinkers have shaped the definition of a "just war" over the centuries, notably St. Thomas Aquinas and the Dutch jurist Hugo Grotius, who argued that nations, like people, were subject to the rule of law and described what conduct was acceptable during war.
Today, the theory provides much of the foundation for international laws governing armed conflict, such as the Geneva Conventions and United Nations Charter.
