Merry Christmas from Yale!
A Daily News column wonders why Jews are so afraid of Christmas. "I suppose I can understand - the holiday does have the word "Christ" right there in the name. And perhaps it used to carry some meaning you wouldn't want to associate yourself with as a member of the Chosen Tribe."
I'm with the author (full disclosure: he's my roommate) in loving Christmas -- and not, since I disagree with his overt atheism, simply because it's "the American winter holiday." Christmas is about more than presents and national unity, and I've no problem with that. I especially like peace on earth and good will to men, but I've no problem with you celebrating your holiday, and no problem with you hoping that I enjoy it. So Merry Christmas!
P.S. In case you are wondering what we do at Yale instead of posting blogs during exam week, we either study or run through the library naked. I studied. Merry Christmas!

10 or 15 years ago, I spent Christmas day doing what I always do on Christmas-I went to the movies! I loved going to the movies on Christmas Day, I had the day off, being Jewish, I had no family commitments and the fact that almost everything else is closed and I can' possibly "accomplish" anything else, makes it special. I like to see a really long movies I would be more reluctant to untertake on day of work or errands. This particular year I was going to see Ghandi. (Isn't that a good Christmas movie?)
I was waiting with a crowd of others when I heard someone behind my party ask his companion who all the people were who were there to see the movie. The companion said "They are Jewish people. They are here today because they already had their Christmas last week." Of course, Chanukah is nothing like Christmas, but that is another topic. I thought, that's right, we have our holiday and you have yours. Who can obejct to that! So Merry Christmas and enjoy the movie.
