My Pilgrimage to Milwaukee

Recently I went on a pilgrimage. No, I am not talking about my trip to Israel in May. I didn't explore the origins of my people or visit the great sites in our history. I explored my own origins and the great sites of my own history. I went to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the location of my birth and the first thirteen years of my life.

I think about place a lot. Once people didn't leave their hometowns. They remained near their family and the places of their childhood their whole lives, an idea that has a romantic resonance for me. While I love that I grew up in Milwaukee, live in Boston, go home to Atlanta, and have family in Chicago and Israel, in some ways it makes me sad. Having to travel long distances to see the people and places that you love is tiring and removes the relationship from the everyday. I am nostalgic for the times when my family all lived together in a place where we had roots. Now none of us live there - like Jews with Israel, we are in a diaspora.

The women in my family are all from Milwaukee. My grandmother, who moved to Atlanta to be near us, grew up there in the inner city when it was still Jewish. My mom and her two sisters grew up in a suburb there. My mom lived there her whole life, except for five years in Israel, until we moved. And I was born and grew up there. The city has a familiarity for me. My family has roots there, something that I don't have in Georgia or Boston. Milwaukee is the land of my foremothers, just as Israel is the land of my distant forefathers and foremothers.

When I got off the plane and saw guys in Milwaukee Brewers hats, I had the thought that it was sort of like when people reach Israel and first see men wearing yarmulkes. It signaled that I had returned to a place where people grew up with the same culture as me.

Before this trip I hadn't been in Milwaukee in a long time except for death-related events. Now, my mom's friend lent me her car and I meandered through my old haunts freely. I saw the house I had lived in, the places I had hung out, the synagogue I had learned and prayed in. I even went to the restaurant where my grandmother and I used to have lunch every Sunday after Hebrew school.

Maybe it is narcissistic to go on a personal pilgrimage. But I do think it was important for me. As much as who I am has been shaped by Judaism and it roots in Israel, those elements have been filtered through my family and our roots in Milwaukee. And just as with Israel, if I cannot live there, I must go back to acknowledge and remember where I came from and why I am the way I am.

The idea of a personal pilgrimage is an excellent one. With space replacing place, we become decentered, ahistorical. IMO, we all need personal narratives, which begin with the physio-cultural. Retracing gives us a restorative sense of that which dwells within.

Moreover Job continued his parable, and said,
Oh that I were as in months past, as in the days when God preserved me;
When his candle shined upon my head, and when by his light I walked through darkness;
As I was in the days of my youth, when the secret of God was upon my tabernacle;
When the Almighty was yet with me, when my children were about me;

The secret things belong unto the Lord our God: but those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children for ever, that we may do all the words of this law.

The secret of the Lord is with them that fear him; and he will shew them his covenant.

He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.

For the froward is abomination to the Lord: but his secret is with the righteous.

Surely the Lord God will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets.

Thus saith the Lord to his anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I have holden, to subdue nations before him; and I will loose the loins of kings, to open before him the two leaved gates; and the gates shall not be shut;
I will go before thee, and make the crooked places straight: I will break in pieces the gates of brass, and cut in sunder the bars of iron:
And I will give thee the treasures of darkness, and hidden riches of secret places, that thou mayest know that I, the Lord, which call thee by thy name, am the God of Israel.
For Jacob my servant's sake, and Israel mine elect, I have even called thee by thy name: I have surnamed thee, though thou hast not known me.
I am the Lord, and there is none else, there is no God beside me: I girded thee, though thou hast not known me:
That they may know from the rising of the sun, and from the west, that there is none beside me. I am the Lord, and there is none else.
I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the Lord do all these things.

The mouth of a righteous man is a well of life
Let her kiss me with the kisses of his mouth

Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.

Then answered Zophar the Naamathite, and said,
Should not the multitude of words be answered? and should a man full of talk be justified?
Should thy lies make men hold their peace? and when thou mockest, shall no man make thee ashamed?
For thou hast said, My doctrine is pure, and I am clean in thine eyes.
But oh that God would speak, and open his lips against thee;
And that he would shew thee the secrets of wisdom, that they are double to that which is! know therefore that God exacteth of thee less than thine iniquity deserveth.
Canst thou by searching find out God? canst thou find out the Almighty unto perfection?
It is as high as heaven; what canst thou do? deeper than hell; what canst thou know?

The words of Agur the son of Jakeh, even the prophecy: the man spake unto Ithiel, even unto Ithiel and Ucal,
Surely I am more brutish than any man, and have not the understanding of a man.
I neither learned wisdom, nor have the knowledge of the holy.
Who hath ascended up into heaven, or descended? who hath gathered the wind in his fists? who hath bound the waters in a garment? who hath established all the ends of the earth? what is his name, and what is his son's name, if thou canst tell?
Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him.

The earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein.
For he hath founded it upon the seas, and established it upon the floods.
Who shall ascend into the hill of the Lord? or who shall stand in his holy place?
He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart; who hath not lifted up his soul unto vanity, nor sworn deceitfully.
He shall receive the blessing from the Lord, and righteousness from the God of his salvation.
This is the generation of them that seek him, that seek thy face, O Jacob. Selah.

I love them that love me; and those that seek me early shall find me.
Riches and honour are with me; yea, durable riches and righteousness.

The song of songs, which is Solomon's.
Let her kiss me with the kisses of his mouth: for thy love is better than wine.
Because of the savour of thy good ointments thy name is as ointment poured forth, therefore do the virgins love me.

So she caught him, and kissed him, and with an impudent face said unto him,
I have peace offerings with me; this day have I payed my vows.
Therefore came I forth to meet thee, diligently to seek thy face, and I have found thee.

The mouth of a righteous man is a well of life: but violence covereth the mouth of the wicked.
Hatred stirreth up strifes: but love covereth all sins.

He that covereth a transgression seeketh love; but he that repeateth a matter separateth very friends.

Whom, though I were righteous, yet would I not answer, but I would make supplication to my judge.
If I had called, and he had answered me; yet would I not believe that he had hearkened unto my voice.
For he breaketh me with a tempest, and multiplieth my wounds without cause.
He will not suffer me to take my breath, but filleth me with bitterness.
If I speak of strength, lo, he is strong: and if of judgment, who shall set me a time to plead?
If I justify myself, mine own mouth shall condemn me: if I say, I am perfect, it shall also prove me perverse.
Though I were perfect, yet would I not know my soul: I would despise my life.

“If I had called, and he had answered me”
“yet would I not believe that he had hearkened unto my voice.”
“Though I were perfect, yet would I not know my soul”

When my spirit was overwhelmed within me, then thou knewest my path. In the way wherein I walked have they privily laid a snare for me.
I looked on my right hand, and beheld, but there was no man that would know me: refuge failed me; no man cared for my soul.

“I looked on my right hand”
“there was no man that would know me”
“no man cared for my soul”

That thy beloved may be delivered; save with thy right hand, and hear me.

“If I had called”
“That thy beloved may be delivered”
“save with thy right hand”
“hear me”

That thy beloved may be delivered: save with thy right hand, and answer me

“had answered me”
“That thy beloved may be delivered”
“save with thy right hand”
“answer me”

Now king David was old and stricken in years; and they covered him with clothes, but he gat no heat.
Wherefore his servants said unto him, Let there be sought for my lord the king a young virgin: and let her stand before the king, and let her cherish him, and let her lie in thy bosom, that my lord the king may get heat.
So they sought for a fair damsel throughout all the coasts of Israel, and found Abishag a Shunammite, and brought her to the king.
And the damsel was very fair, and cherished the king, and ministered to him: but the king knew her not.

And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him:
And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying,
Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.
Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.
Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.
Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.

“Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”

Blessed is he that considereth the poor: the Lord will deliver him in time of trouble.
The Lord will preserve him, and keep him alive; and he shall be blessed upon the earth: and thou wilt not deliver him unto the will of his enemies.
The Lord will strengthen him upon the bed of languishing: thou wilt make all his bed in his sickness.
I said, Lord, be merciful unto me: heal my soul; for I have sinned against thee.

Give the king thy judgments, O God, and thy righteousness unto the king's son.
He shall judge thy people with righteousness, and thy poor with judgment.
The mountains shall bring peace to the people, and the little hills, by righteousness.
He shall judge the poor of the people, he shall save the children of the needy, and shall break in pieces the oppressor.
They shall fear thee as long as the sun and moon endure, throughout all generations.
He shall come down like rain upon the mown grass: as showers that water the earth.
In his days shall the righteous flourish; and abundance of peace so long as the moon endureth.
He shall have dominion also from sea to sea, and from the river unto the ends of the earth.
They that dwell in the wilderness shall bow before him; and his enemies shall lick the dust.
The kings of Tarshish and of the isles shall bring presents: the kings of Sheba and Seba shall offer gifts.
Yea, all kings shall fall down before him: all nations shall serve him.
For he shall deliver the needy when he crieth; the poor also, and him that hath no helper.
He shall spare the poor and needy, and shall save the souls of the needy.
He shall redeem their soul from deceit and violence: and precious shall their blood be in his sight.
And he shall live, and to him shall be given of the gold of Sheba: prayer also shall be made for him continually; and daily shall he be praised.
There shall be an handful of corn in the earth upon the top of the mountains; the fruit thereof shall shake like Lebanon: and they of the city shall flourish like grass of the earth.
His name shall endure for ever: his name shall be continued as long as the sun: and men shall be blessed in him: all nations shall call him blessed.
Blessed be the Lord God, the God of Israel, who only doeth wondrous things.
And blessed be his glorious name for ever: and let the whole earth be filled with his glory; Amen, and Amen.
The prayers of David the son of Jesse are ended.

“Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.”

And Joseph fell upon his father's face, and wept upon him, and kissed him.
And Joseph commanded his servants the physicians to embalm his father: and the physicians embalmed Israel.
And forty days were fulfilled for him; for so are fulfilled the days of those which are embalmed: and the Egyptians mourned for him threescore and ten days.
And when the days of his mourning were past, Joseph spake unto the house of Pharaoh, saying, If now I have found grace in your eyes, speak, I pray you, in the ears of Pharaoh, saying,
My father made me swear, saying, Lo, I die: in my grave which I have digged for me in the land of Canaan, there shalt thou bury me. Now therefore let me go up, I pray thee, and bury my father, and I will come again.
And Pharaoh said, Go up, and bury thy father, according as he made thee swear.
And Joseph went up to bury his father: and with him went up all the servants of Pharaoh, the elders of his house, and all the elders of the land of Egypt,
And all the house of Joseph, and his brethren, and his father's house: only their little ones, and their flocks, and their herds, they left in the land of Goshen.

“Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.”

And Miriam and Aaron spake against Moses because of the Ethiopian woman whom he had married: for he had married an Ethiopian woman.
And they said, Hath the Lord indeed spoken only by Moses? hath he not spoken also by us? And the Lord heard it.
Now the man Moses was very meek, above all the men which were upon the face of the earth.
And the Lord spake suddenly unto Moses, and unto Aaron, and unto Miriam, Come out ye three unto the tabernacle of the congregation. And they three came out.
And the Lord came down in the pillar of the cloud, and stood in the door of the tabernacle, and called Aaron and Miriam: and they both came forth.
And he said, Hear now my words: If there be a prophet among you, I the Lord will make myself known unto him in a vision, and will speak unto him in a dream.
My servant Moses is not so, who is faithful in all mine house.
With him will I speak mouth to mouth, even apparently, and not in dark speeches; and the similitude of the Lord shall he behold: wherefore then were ye not afraid to speak against my servant Moses?

“Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.”

Give ear, O ye heavens, and I will speak; and hear, O earth, the words of my mouth.
My doctrine shall drop as the rain, my speech shall distil as the dew, as the small rain upon the tender herb, and as the showers upon the grass:
Because I will publish the name of the Lord: ascribe ye greatness unto our God.
He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he.
They have corrupted themselves, their spot is not the spot of his children: they are a perverse and crooked generation.
Do ye thus requite the Lord, O foolish people and unwise? is not he thy father that hath bought thee? hath he not made thee, and established thee?
Remember the days of old, consider the years of many generations: ask thy father, and he will shew thee; thy elders, and they will tell thee.
When the most high divided to the nations their inheritance, when he separated the sons of Adam, he set the bounds of the people according to the number of the children of Israel.
For the Lord's portion is his people; Jacob is the lot of his inheritance.

But the land, whither ye go to possess it, is a land of hills and valleys, and drinketh water of the rain of heaven:
A land which the Lord thy God careth for: the eyes of the Lord thy God are always upon it, from the beginning of the year even unto the end of the year.
And it shall come to pass, if ye shall hearken diligently unto my commandments which I command you this day, to love the Lord your God, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul,
That I will give you the rain of your land in his due season, the first rain and the latter rain, that thou mayest gather in thy corn, and thy wine, and thine oil.

“drinketh water of the rain of heaven”
“A land which the Lord thy God careth for”
“I will give you the rain of your land in his due season, the first rain and the latter rain”

Then said the Lord unto Moses, Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather a certain rate every day, that I may prove them, whether they will walk in my law, or no.

“I will rain bread from heaven for you”
“the people shall go out and gather a certain rate every day”
“I may prove them, whether they will walk in my law, or no”

Then I will give you rain in due season, and the land shall yield her increase, and the trees of the field shall yield their fruit.
And your threshing shall reach unto the vintage, and the vintage shall reach unto the sowing time: and ye shall eat your bread to the full, and dwell in your land safely.
And I will give peace in the land, and ye shall lie down, and none shall make you afraid: and I will rid evil beasts out of the land, neither shall the sword go through your land.

“I will give you rain in due season”
“the trees of the field shall yield their fruit”
“sowing time: and ye shall eat your bread to the full, and dwell in your land safely”
“I will give peace in the land”
“I will rid evil beasts out of the land, neither shall the sword go through your land”

“the first rain and the latter rain”

The Lord shall open unto thee his good treasure, the heaven to give the rain unto thy land in his season, and to bless all the work of thine hand: and thou shalt lend unto many nations, and thou shalt not borrow.
And the Lord shall make thee the head, and not the tail; and thou shalt be above only, and thou shalt not be beneath; if that thou hearken unto the commandments of the Lord thy God, which I command thee this day, to observe and to do them:

“the heaven to give the rain unto thy land in his season”
“to bless all the work of thine hand”
“the Lord shall make thee the head”

“Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.”

Therefore hath the Lord recompensed me according to my righteousness, according to the cleanness of my hands in his eyesight.
With the merciful thou wilt shew thyself merciful; with an upright man thou wilt shew thyself upright;
With the pure thou wilt shew thyself pure; and with the froward thou wilt shew thyself froward.
For thou wilt save the afflicted people; but wilt bring down high looks.
For thou wilt light my candle: the Lord my God will enlighten my darkness.
For by thee I have run through a troop; and by my God have I leaped over a wall.
As for God, his way is perfect: the word of the Lord is tried: he is a buckler to all those that trust in him.
For who is God save the Lord? or who is a rock save our God?
It is God that girdeth me with strength, and maketh my way perfect.

I said, Lord, be merciful unto me: heal my soul; for I have sinned against thee.

Bow down thine ear, O Lord, hear me: for I am poor and needy.
Preserve my soul; for I am holy: O thou my God, save thy servant that trusteth in thee.
Be merciful unto me, O Lord: for I cry unto thee daily.
Rejoice the soul of thy servant: for unto thee, O Lord, do I lift up my soul.
For thou, Lord, art good, and ready to forgive; and plenteous in mercy unto all them that call upon thee.
Give ear, O Lord, unto my prayer; and attend to the voice of my supplications.
In the day of my trouble I will call upon thee: for thou wilt answer me.
Among the gods there is none like unto thee, O Lord; neither are there any works like unto thy works.
All nations whom thou hast made shall come and worship before thee, O Lord; and shall glorify thy name.
For thou art great, and doest wondrous things: thou art God alone.
Teach me thy way, O Lord; I will walk in thy truth: unite my heart to fear thy name.
I will praise thee, O Lord my God, with all my heart: and I will glorify thy name for evermore.
For great is thy mercy toward me: and thou hast delivered my soul from the lowest hell.

O give thanks unto the Lord; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.
O give thanks unto the God of gods: for his mercy endureth for ever.
O give thanks to the Lord of lords: for his mercy endureth for ever.
To him who alone doeth great wonders: for his mercy endureth for ever.
To him that by wisdom made the heavens: for his mercy endureth for ever.
To him that stretched out the earth above the waters: for his mercy endureth for ever.
To him that made great lights: for his mercy endureth for ever:
The sun to rule by day: for his mercy endureth for ever:
The moon and stars to rule by night: for his mercy endureth for ever.
To him that smote Egypt in their firstborn: for his mercy endureth for ever:
And brought out Israel from among them: for his mercy endureth for ever:
With a strong hand, and with a stretched out arm: for his mercy endureth for ever.
To him which divided the Red sea into parts: for his mercy endureth for ever:
And made Israel to pass through the midst of it: for his mercy endureth for ever:
But overthrew Pharaoh and his host in the Red sea: for his mercy endureth for ever.
To him which led his people through the wilderness: for his mercy endureth for ever.
To him which smote great kings: for his mercy endureth for ever:
And slew famous kings: for his mercy endureth for ever:
Sihon king of the Amorites: for his mercy endureth for ever:
And Og the king of Bashan: for his mercy endureth for ever:
And gave their land for an heritage: for his mercy endureth for ever:
Even an heritage unto Israel his servant: for his mercy endureth for ever.
Who remembered us in our low estate: for his mercy endureth for ever:
And hath redeemed us from our enemies: for his mercy endureth for ever.
Who giveth food to all flesh: for his mercy endureth for ever.
O give thanks unto the God of heaven: for his mercy endureth for ever.

“I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance”

And Job answered and said,
No doubt but ye are the people, and wisdom shall die with you.
But I have understanding as well as you; I am not inferior to you: yea, who knoweth not such things as these?
I am as one mocked of his neighbour, who calleth upon God, and he answereth him: the just upright man is laughed to scorn.
He that is ready to slip with his feet is as a lamp despised in the thought of him that is at ease.
The tabernacles of robbers prosper, and they that provoke God are secure; into whose hand God bringeth abundantly.
But ask now the beasts, and they shall teach thee; and the fowls of the air, and they shall tell thee:
Or speak to the earth, and it shall teach thee: and the fishes of the sea shall declare unto thee.
Who knoweth not in all these that the hand of the Lord hath wrought this?
In whose hand is the soul of every living thing, and the breath of all mankind.
Doth not the ear try words? and the mouth taste his meat?
With the ancient is wisdom; and in length of days understanding.
With him is wisdom and strength, he hath counsel and understanding.

“In whose hand is the soul of every living thing, and the breath of all mankind.”

She is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her: and happy is every one that retaineth her.

O ye simple, understand wisdom: and, ye fools, be ye of an understanding heart.
Hear; for I will speak of excellent things; and the opening of my lips shall be right things.
For my mouth shall speak truth; and wickedness is an abomination to my lips.
All the words of my mouth are in righteousness; there is nothing froward or perverse in them.
They are all plain to him that understandeth, and right to them that find knowledge.
Receive my instruction, and not silver; and knowledge rather than choice gold.
For wisdom is better than rubies; and all the things that may be desired are not to be compared to it.
I wisdom dwell with prudence, and find out knowledge of witty inventions.
The fear of the Lord is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate.
Counsel is mine, and sound wisdom: I am understanding; I have strength.
By me kings reign, and princes decree justice.
By me princes rule, and nobles, even all the judges of the earth.
I love them that love me; and those that seek me early shall find me.

“understand wisdom” “be ye of an understanding heart”
“The fear of the Lord is to hate evil”
“Counsel is mine, and sound wisdom: I am understanding; I have strength.”

After this lived Job an hundred and forty years, and saw his sons, and his sons' sons, even four generations.

“saw his sons, and his sons' sons, even four generations.”

The fourth and last generation

And, behold, the Lord stood above it, and said, I am the Lord God of Abraham thy father, and the God of Isaac: the land whereon thou liest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed;
And thy seed shall be as the dust of the earth, and thou shalt spread abroad to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south: and in thee and in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed.

“thy seed shall be as the dust of the earth”

“to the east”
“to the north”
“to the south”
“in thee and in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed”

All they that be fat upon earth shall eat and worship: all they that go down to the dust shall bow before him: and none can keep alive his own soul.
A seed shall serve him; it shall be accounted to the Lord for a generation.
They shall come, and shall declare his righteousness unto a people that shall be born, that he hath done this.

“All they that be fat upon earth shall eat and worship”
“all they that go down to the dust shall bow before him”
“none can keep alive his own soul”
“A seed shall serve him”
“it shall be accounted to the Lord for a generation”
“declare his righteousness unto a people that shall be born”

Give ear, O ye heavens, and I will speak; and hear, O earth, the words of my mouth.
My doctrine shall drop as the rain, my speech shall distil as the dew, as the small rain upon the tender herb, and as the showers upon the grass:
Because I will publish the name of the Lord: ascribe ye greatness unto our God.
He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he.

“Give ear, O ye heavens”
“I will speak; and hear”
“O earth, the words of my mouth”
“My doctrine shall drop as the rain”
“I will publish the name of the Lord”

And she conceived again, and bare a son: and she said, Now will I praise the Lord: therefore she called his name Judah; and left bearing.

“I praise the Lord”
“called his name Judah”

Gilead is mine, and Manasseh is mine; Ephraim also is the strength of mine head; Judah is my lawgiver;

“Judah is my lawgiver”

I have set the Lord always before me: because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.

“I have set the Lord always before me”
“he is at my right hand”

When my spirit was overwhelmed within me, then thou knewest my path. In the way wherein I walked have they privily laid a snare for me.
I looked on my right hand, and beheld, but there was no man that would know me: refuge failed me; no man cared for my soul.

“I looked on my right hand”
“there was no man that would know me”
“no man cared for my soul”

Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied.

“Then said David”
“I come to thee in the name of the Lord of hosts”

And God remembered Rachel, and God hearkened to her, and opened her womb.
And she conceived, and bare a son; and said, God hath taken away my reproach:
And she called his name Joseph; and said, The Lord shall add to me another son.

“God remembered Rachel”
“and opened her womb”
“she called his name Joseph”
“The Lord shall add to me another son”

And Jacob called the name of the place where God spake with him, Bethel.
And they journeyed from Bethel; and there was but a little way to come to Ephrath: and Rachel travailed, and she had hard labour.
And it came to pass, when she was in hard labour, that the midwife said unto her, Fear not; thou shalt have this son also.
And it came to pass, as her soul was in departing, (for she died) that she called his name Benoni: but his father called him Benjamin.
And Rachel died, and was buried in the way to Ephrath, which is Bethlehem.
And Jacob set a pillar upon her grave: that is the pillar of Rachel's grave unto this day.

“The Lord shall add to me another son”
“she called his name Benoni”
“but his father called him Benjamin”

And he lifted up his eyes, and saw his brother Benjamin, his mother's son, and said, Is this your younger brother, of whom ye spake unto me? And he said, God be gracious unto thee, my son.
And Joseph made haste; for his bowels did yearn upon his brother: and he sought where to weep; and he entered into his chamber, and wept there.

“he lifted up his eyes”
“saw his brother Benjamin”
“The Lord shall add to me another son”
“his mother's son”
“she called his name Benoni”
“God be gracious unto thee, my son”
“for his bowels did yearn upon his brother”

And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,
Speak unto Aaron and unto his sons, saying, On this wise ye shall bless the children of Israel, saying unto them,
The Lord bless thee, and keep thee:
The Lord make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee:
The Lord lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace.
And they shall put my name upon the children of Israel, and I will bless them.

“On this wise ye shall bless the children of Israel, saying unto them”
“The Lord bless thee”
“and keep thee”
“The Lord make his face shine upon thee”

Are there any among the vanities of the Gentiles that can cause rain? or can the heavens give showers? art not thou he, O Lord our God? therefore we will wait upon thee: for thou hast made all these things.

“Are there any among the vanities of the Gentiles that can cause rain”
“or can the heavens give showers? art not thou he, O Lord our God”

These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens,

“generations of the heavens and of the earth”
“the day that the Lord made the earth and the heavens”

She is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her: and happy is every one that retaineth her.
The Lord by wisdom hath founded the earth; by understanding hath he established the heavens.

“She is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her”
“The Lord by wisdom hath founded the earth”
“understanding hath he established the heavens.”
“the day that the Lord made the earth and the heavens”

And it shall come to pass, if ye shall hearken diligently unto my commandments which I command you this day, to love the Lord your God, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul,
That I will give you the rain of your land in his due season, the first rain and the latter rain, that thou mayest gather in thy corn, and thy wine, and thine oil.

And his mother answered and said, Not so; but he shall be called John.
And they said unto her, There is none of thy kindred that is called by this name.
And they made signs to his father, how he would have him called.
And he asked for a writing table, and wrote, saying, His name is John. And they marvelled all.
And his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue loosed, and he spake, and praised God.
And fear came on all that dwelt round about them: and all these sayings were noised abroad throughout all the hill country of Judaea.
And all they that heard them laid them up in their hearts, saying, What manner of child shall this be! And the hand of the Lord was with him.
And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Ghost, and prophesied, saying,
Blessed be the Lord God of Israel; for he hath visited and redeemed his people,
And hath raised up an horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David;
As he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets, which have been since the world began:
That we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us;
To perform the mercy promised to our fathers, and to remember his holy covenant;
The oath which he sware to our father Abraham,
That he would grant unto us, that we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies might serve him without fear,
In holiness and righteousness before him, all the days of our life.

“Not so; but he shall be called John”

In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea,
And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.
And the same John had his raiment of camel's hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his meat was locusts and wild honey.
Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judaea, and all the region round about Jordan,
And were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins.
But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance:
And think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.
And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:

“Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.”
“Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
“And were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins.”
“O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?”
“the axe is laid unto the root of the trees”
“therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down”
“and cast into the fire”
“I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance”

Hear ye the word which the Lord speaketh unto you, O house of Israel:
Thus saith the Lord, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them.
For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe.
They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not.
They are upright as the palm tree, but speak not: they must needs be borne, because they cannot go. Be not afraid of them; for they cannot do evil, neither also is it in them to do good.
Forasmuch as there is none like unto thee, O Lord; thou art great, and thy name is great in might.
Who would not fear thee, O King of nations? for to thee doth it appertain: forasmuch as among all the wise men of the nations, and in all their kingdoms, there is none like unto thee.
But they are altogether brutish and foolish: the stock is a doctrine of vanities.

“Thus saith the Lord”
“Learn not the way of the heathen”
“be not dismayed at the signs of heaven”
“for the heathen are dismayed at them”
“For the customs of the people are vain”
“for one cutteth a tree out of the forest”
“the work of the hands of the workman”
“with the axe”
“they fasten it with nails and with hammers”
“that it move not”
“But they are altogether brutish and foolish”
“the stock is a doctrine of vanities”

Are there any among the vanities of the Gentiles that can cause rain? or can the heavens give showers? art not thou he, O Lord our God? therefore we will wait upon thee: for thou hast made all these things.

“Are there any among the vanities of the Gentiles that can cause rain”
“or can the heavens give showers? art not thou he, O Lord our God”

The word of the Lord which came to Jeremiah the prophet against the Gentiles;

“Jeremiah the prophet against the Gentiles”

The lion is come up from his thicket, and the destroyer of the Gentiles is on his way; he is gone forth from his place to make thy land desolate; and thy cities shall be laid waste, without an inhabitant.

“The lion is come up from his thicket”
“the destroyer of the Gentiles is on his way”

How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity? and the scorners delight in their scorning, and fools hate knowledge?
Turn you at my reproof: behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you, I will make known my words unto you.
Because I have called, and ye refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no man regarded;
But ye have set at nought all my counsel, and would none of my reproof:

“How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity”
“the scorners delight in their scorning, and fools hate knowledge”
“Turn you at my reproof: behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you”
“I will make known my words unto you.”
“Because I have called, and ye refused”
“I have stretched out my hand, and no man regarded”

And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God.
And he blessed him, and said, Blessed be Abram of the most high God, possessor of heaven and earth:
And blessed be the most high God, which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand. And he gave him tithes of all.
And the king of Sodom said unto Abram, Give me the persons, and take the goods to thyself.
And Abram said to the king of Sodom, I have lift up mine hand unto the Lord, the most high God, the possessor of heaven and earth,
That I will not take from a thread even to a shoelatchet, and that I will not take any thing that is thine, lest thou shouldest say, I have made Abram rich:
Save only that which the young men have eaten, and the portion of the men which went with me, Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre; let them take their portion.

“king of Sodom said unto Abram”
“Give me the persons, and take the goods to thyself.”
“Abram said to the king of Sodom”
“I have lift up mine hand unto the Lord”
“That I will not take from a thread even to a shoelatchet”
“that I will not take any thing that is thine”
“Save only that which”
“the men which went with me”

Then Samuel told the people the manner of the kingdom, and wrote it in a book, and laid it up before the Lord. And Samuel sent all the people away, every man to his house.
And Saul also went home to Gibeah; and there went with him a band of men, whose hearts God had touched.
But the children of Belial said, How shall this man save us? And they despised him, and brought him no presents. But he held his peace.

“And Saul also went home to Gibeah”
“there went with him a band of men”
“whose hearts God had touched”
“the children of Belial said, How shall this man save us”
“And they despised him, and brought him no presents”
“But he held his peace”

My bowels, my bowels! I am pained at my very heart; my heart maketh a noise in me; I cannot hold my peace, because thou hast heard, O my soul, the sound of the trumpet, the alarm of war.
Destruction upon destruction is cried; for the whole land is spoiled: suddenly are my tents spoiled, and my curtains in a moment.
How long shall I see the standard, and hear the sound of the trumpet?
For my people is foolish, they have not known me; they are sottish children, and they have none understanding: they are wise to do evil, but to do good they have no knowledge.
I beheld the earth, and, lo, it was without form, and void; and the heavens, and they had no light.

“My bowels, my bowels! I am pained at my very heart”
“I cannot hold my peace”
“the sound of the trumpet, the alarm of war”
“Destruction upon destruction is cried”
“they have not known me; they are sottish children”
“they have none understanding”
“they are wise to do evil”
“but to do good they have no knowledge”
“I beheld the earth”
“it was without form, and void”
“and the heavens, and they had no light.”

In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

“God created the heaven and the earth”
“And the earth was without form, and void”
“darkness was upon the face of the deep”

Recently I went on a pilgrimage
I must go back to acknowledge and remember where I came from and why I am the way I am.

“Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars”
“if thou be able to number them”
“So shall thy seed be”
“the angel of the Lord called unto Abraham out of heaven the second time”
“That in blessing I will bless thee”
“I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven”
“as the sand which is upon the sea shore”
“thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies”
“in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed”
“because thou hast obeyed my voice”
“God Almighty bless thee”
“make thee fruitful”
“multiply thee”
“that thou mayest be a multitude of people”
“And give thee the blessing of Abraham”
“to thee, and to thy seed with thee”
“Joseph is a fruitful”
“fruitful bough by a well”
“whose branches run over the wall”
“the God of thy father, who shall help thee”
“and by the Almighty, who shall bless thee with blessings of heaven above”
“blessings of the deep that lieth under”
“blessings of the breasts, and of the womb”
“The blessings of thy father have prevailed above the blessings of my progenitors”
“unto the utmost bound of the everlasting hills”
“they shall be on the head of Joseph”
“Joseph fell upon his father's face”
“and kissed him”
“Moses said unto the Lord”
“Wherefore hast thou afflicted thy servant”
“wherefore have I not found favour in thy sight”
“that thou layest the burden of all this people upon me”
“Have I conceived all this people”
“have I begotten them, that thou shouldest say unto me”
“Carry them in thy bosom, as a nursing father beareth the sucking child”
“The Lord your God hath multiplied you”
“ye are this day as the stars of heaven for multitude.”
“And I commanded you at that time all the things which ye should do.”
“the Lord spake unto Moses”
“Sanctify unto me all the firstborn”
“whatsoever openeth the womb among the children of Israel”
“both of man and of beast”
“it is mine”
“Only the Lord had a delight in thy fathers to love them”
“he chose their seed after them, even you above all people, as it is this day”
“Circumcise therefore the foreskin of your heart”
“the Lord thy God will circumcise thine heart”
“and the heart of thy seed”
“to love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul”
“that thou mayest live”
“On this wise ye shall bless the children of Israel, saying unto them”
“The Lord bless thee”
“and keep thee”
“The Lord make his face shine upon thee”
“be gracious unto thee”

“give thee peace”
“And they shall put my name upon the children of Israel”

Beware of him, and obey his voice, provoke him not; for he will not pardon your transgressions: for My name is in him.
But if thou shalt indeed obey his voice, and do all that I speak; then I will be an enemy unto thine enemies, and an adversary unto thine adversaries.
For mine Angel shall go before thee, and bring thee in unto the Amorites, and the Hittites, and the Perizzites, and the Canaanites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites: and I will cut them off.
Thou shalt not bow down to their gods, nor serve them, nor do after their works: but thou shalt utterly overthrow them, and quite break down their images.
And ye shall serve the Lord your God, and He shall bless thy bread, and thy water; and I will take sickness away from the midst of thee.

And it shall come to pass, if ye shall hearken diligently unto my commandments which I command you this day, to love the Lord your God, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul,
That I will give you the rain of your land in his due season, the first rain and the latter rain, that thou mayest gather in thy corn, and thy wine, and thine oil.

“the first rain and the latter rain”

Thou leddest thy people like a flock by the hand of Moses and Aaron.

“Thou leddest thy people”
“by the hand of Moses and Aaron”

The children of Israel brought a willing offering unto the Lord, every man and woman, whose heart made them willing to bring for all manner of work, which the Lord had commanded to be made by the hand of Moses.

“the Lord had commanded to be made by the hand of Moses.”

As Moses the servant of the Lord commanded the children of Israel, as it is written in the book of the law of Moses, an altar of whole stones, over which no man hath lift up any iron: and they offered thereon burnt offerings unto the Lord, and sacrificed peace offerings.

“as it is written in the book of the law of Moses”

So Aaron and his sons did all things which the Lord commanded by the hand of Moses.

“Aaron and his sons did all things which the Lord commanded by the hand of Moses”

And when Rachel saw that she bare Jacob no children, Rachel envied her sister; and said unto Jacob, Give me children, or else I die.
And Jacob's anger was kindled against Rachel: and he said, Am I in God's stead, who hath withheld from thee the fruit of the womb?

“who hath withheld from thee the fruit of the womb”

They envied Moses also in the camp, and Aaron the saint of the Lord.

“Aaron the saint of the Lord”

And this is the blessing, wherewith Moses the man of God blessed the children of Israel before his death.
And he said, The Lord came from Sinai, and rose up from Seir unto them; he shined forth from mount Paran, and he came with ten thousands of saints: from his right hand went a fiery law for them.
Yea, he loved the people; all his saints are in thy hand: and they sat down at thy feet; every one shall receive of thy words.
Moses commanded us a law, even the inheritance of the congregation of Jacob.
And he was king in Jeshurun, when the heads of the people and the tribes of Israel were gathered together.

“Moses the man of God blessed the children of Israel”
“came with ten thousands of saints”
“from his right hand went a fiery law for them”
“Yea, he loved the people”
“all his saints are in thy hand”
“they sat down at thy feet”

And she conceived again, and bare a son: and she said, Now will I praise the Lord: therefore she called his name Judah; and left bearing.

“I praise the Lord”
“called his name Judah”

Gilead is mine, and Manasseh is mine; Ephraim also is the strength of mine head; Judah is my lawgiver;

“be gracious unto thee”
“The Lord lift up his countenance upon thee”
“give thee peace”
“And they shall put my name upon the children of Israel”
“and I will bless them”

Circumcision of the eight day
“the day that the Lord made the earth and the heavens”
“And they shall put my name upon the children of Israel”
“and I will bless them”

This is the generation of them that seek him, that seek thy face, O Jacob

Hear, ye children, the instruction of a father, and attend to know understanding.
For I give you good doctrine, forsake ye not my law.
For I was my father's son, tender and only beloved in the sight of my mother.
He taught me also, and said unto me, Let thine heart retain my words: keep my commandments, and live.
Get wisdom, get understanding: forget it not; neither decline from the words of my mouth.
Forsake her not, and she shall preserve thee: love her, and she shall keep thee.
Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.
Exalt her, and she shall promote thee: she shall bring thee to honour, when thou dost embrace her.
She shall give to thine head an ornament of grace: a crown of glory shall she deliver to thee.

My son, despise not the chastening of the Lord; neither be weary of his correction:
For whom the Lord loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth.
Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding.

After this lived Job an hundred and forty years, and saw his sons, and his sons' sons, even four generations.

“Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars”
“if thou be able to number them”
“So shall thy seed be”
“the angel of the Lord called unto Abraham out of heaven the second time”
“That in blessing I will bless thee”
“I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven”

“as the sand which is upon the sea shore”
“all the days of Solomon”
“I will rend the kingdom out of the hand of Solomon”
“and will give ten tribes to thee”

“thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies”
“the number of names together were about an hundred and twenty”

“thy seed shall be as the dust of the earth”
“thou shalt spread abroad to the west”
“to the east”
“to the north”
“to the south”
“in thee and in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed”

All they that be fat upon earth shall eat and worship: all they that go down to the dust shall bow before him: and none can keep alive his own soul.
A seed shall serve him; it shall be accounted to the Lord for a generation.
They shall come, and shall declare his righteousness unto a people that shall be born, that he hath done this.

This is the generation of them that seek him, that seek thy face, O Jacob

“of all that thou shalt give me I will surely give the tenth unto thee”
“and will give ten tribes to thee”

“But he shall have one tribe for my servant David's sake”
“and for Jerusalem's sake”

“Sanctify unto me all the firstborn”
“whatsoever openeth the womb among the children of Israel”
“both of man and of beast”
“it is mine”

“Joseph fell upon his father's face”
“and kissed him”

When thou saidst, Seek ye my face; my heart said unto thee, Thy face, Lord, will I seek.

Selah.
Lift up your heads, O ye gates; and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in.
Who is this King of glory? The Lord strong and mighty, the Lord mighty in battle.
Lift up your heads, O ye gates; even lift them up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in.
Who is this King of glory? The Lord of hosts, he is the King of glory. Selah.

And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to number them: and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be.
And he believed in the Lord; and he counted it to him for righteousness.

“Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars”
“if thou be able to number them”
“So shall thy seed be”

And the angel of the Lord called unto Abraham out of heaven the second time,
And said, By myself have I sworn, saith the Lord, for because thou hast done this thing, and hast not withheld thy son, thine only son:
That in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies;
And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice.

Sojourn in this land, and I will be with thee, and will bless thee; for unto thee, and unto thy seed, I will give all these countries, and I will perform the oath which I sware unto Abraham thy father;
And I will make thy seed to multiply as the stars of heaven, and will give unto thy seed all these countries; and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed;
Because that Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws.

“Sojourn in this land, and I will be with thee, and will bless thee”
“unto thy seed, I will give all these countries, and I will perform the oath which I sware unto Abraham thy father”
“I will make thy seed to multiply as the stars of heaven”
“and will give unto thy seed all these countries”
“in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed”

And God Almighty bless thee, and make thee fruitful, and multiply thee, that thou mayest be a multitude of people;
And give thee the blessing of Abraham, to thee, and to thy seed with thee; that thou mayest inherit the land wherein thou art a stranger, which God gave unto Abraham.

“God Almighty bless thee”
“make thee fruitful”
“multiply thee”
“that thou mayest be a multitude of people”
“And give thee the blessing of Abraham”
“to thee, and to thy seed with thee”

And Jacob went out from Beersheba, and went toward Haran.
And he lighted upon a certain place, and tarried there all night, because the sun was set; and he took of the stones of that place, and put them for his pillows, and lay down in that place to sleep.
And he dreamed, and behold a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven: and behold the angels of God ascending and descending on it.
And, behold, the Lord stood above it, and said, I am the Lord God of Abraham thy father, and the God of Isaac: the land whereon thou liest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed;
And thy seed shall be as the dust of the earth, and thou shalt spread abroad to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south: and in thee and in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed.
And, behold, I am with thee, and will keep thee in all places whither thou goest, and will bring thee again into this land; for I will not leave thee, until I have done that which I have spoken to thee of.
And Jacob awaked out of his sleep, and he said, Surely the Lord is in this place; and I knew it not.
And he was afraid, and said, How dreadful is this place! this is none other but the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.
And Jacob rose up early in the morning, and took the stone that he had put for his pillows, and set it up for a pillar, and poured oil upon the top of it.
And he called the name of that place Bethel: but the name of that city was called Luz at the first.
And Jacob vowed a vow, saying, If God will be with me, and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat, and raiment to put on,
So that I come again to my father's house in peace; then shall the Lord be my God:
And this stone, which I have set for a pillar, shall be God's house: and of all that thou shalt give me I will surely give the tenth unto thee.

“Jacob went out from Beersheba”
“And he dreamed”
“a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven”
“behold the angels of God ascending and descending on it.”
“behold, the Lord stood above it”
“the land whereon thou liest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed”
“How dreadful is this place”
“this is none other but the house of God,”
“this is the gate of heaven”
“If God will be with me”
“and will keep me in this way that I go”
“will give me bread to eat, and raiment to put on”
“So that I come again to my father's house in peace”
“then shall the Lord be my God”
“of all that thou shalt give me I will surely give the tenth unto thee”

Joseph is a fruitful bough, even a fruitful bough by a well; whose branches run over the wall:
The archers have sorely grieved him, and shot at him, and hated him:
But his bow abode in strength, and the arms of his hands were made strong by the hands of the mighty God of Jacob; (from thence is the shepherd, the stone of Israel:)
Even by the God of thy father, who shall help thee; and by the Almighty, who shall bless thee with blessings of heaven above, blessings of the deep that lieth under, blessings of the breasts, and of the womb:
The blessings of thy father have prevailed above the blessings of my progenitors unto the utmost bound of the everlasting hills: they shall be on the head of Joseph, and on the crown of the head of him that was separate from his brethren.

And Joseph fell upon his father's face, and wept upon him, and kissed him.

“Joseph fell upon his father's face”
“and kissed him”

Then Moses heard the people weep throughout their families, every man in the door of his tent: and the anger of the Lord was kindled greatly; Moses also was displeased.
And Moses said unto the Lord, Wherefore hast thou afflicted thy servant? and wherefore have I not found favour in thy sight, that thou layest the burden of all this people upon me?
Have I conceived all this people? have I begotten them, that thou shouldest say unto me, Carry them in thy bosom, as a nursing father beareth the sucking child, unto the land which thou swarest unto their fathers?

“Moses said unto the Lord”
“Wherefore hast thou afflicted thy servant”
“wherefore have I not found favour in thy sight”
“that thou layest the burden of all this people upon me”
“Have I conceived all this people”
“have I begotten them, that thou shouldest say unto me”
“Carry them in thy bosom, as a nursing father beareth the sucking child”

And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,
Sanctify unto me all the firstborn, whatsoever openeth the womb among the children of Israel, both of man and of beast: it is mine.
And Moses said unto the people, Remember this day, in which ye came out from Egypt, out of the house of bondage; for by strength of hand the Lord brought you out from this place: there shall no leavened bread be eaten.

“the Lord spake unto Moses”
“Sanctify unto me all the firstborn”
“whatsoever openeth the womb among the children of Israel”
“both of man and of beast”
“it is mine”

Only the Lord had a delight in thy fathers to love them, and he chose their seed after them, even you above all people, as it is this day.
Circumcise therefore the foreskin of your heart, and be no more stiffnecked.

“Only the Lord had a delight in thy fathers to love them”
“he chose their seed after them, even you above all people, as it is this day”
“Circumcise therefore the foreskin of your heart”

And the Lord thy God will circumcise thine heart, and the heart of thy seed, to love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, that thou mayest live.

“the Lord thy God will circumcise thine heart”
“and the heart of thy seed”
“to love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul”
“that thou mayest live”

“be gracious unto thee”
“The Lord lift up his countenance upon thee”
“give thee peace”
“And they shall put my name upon the children of Israel”
“and I will bless them”

For he had dominion over all the region on this side the river, from Tiphsah even to Azzah, over all the kings on this side the river: and he had peace on all sides round about him.
And Judah and Israel dwelt safely, every man under his vine and under his fig tree, from Dan even to Beersheba, all the days of Solomon.

“he had peace on all sides round about him”
“Judah and Israel dwelt safely”
“every man under his vine and under his fig tree”
“from Dan even to Beersheba”
“all the days of Solomon”

And he said to Jeroboam, Take thee ten pieces: for thus saith the Lord, the God of Israel, Behold, I will rend the kingdom out of the hand of Solomon, and will give ten tribes to thee:
But he shall have one tribe for my servant David's sake, and for Jerusalem's sake, the city which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel:

“I will rend the kingdom out of the hand of Solomon”
“and will give ten tribes to thee”
“But he shall have one tribe for my servant David's sake”
“and for Jerusalem's sake”
“the city which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel”

And in those days Peter stood up in the midst of the disciples, and said, the number of names together were about an hundred and twenty,

“the number of names together were about an hundred and twenty”

And, behold, the Lord stood above it, and said, I am the Lord God of Abraham thy father, and the God of Isaac: the land whereon thou liest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed;
And thy seed shall be as the dust of the earth, and thou shalt spread abroad to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south: and in thee and in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed.

Recently I went on a pilgrimage
I must go back to acknowledge and remember where I came from and why I am the way I am.

“And they shall put my name upon the children of Israel”

“Sanctify unto me all the firstborn”
“whatsoever openeth the womb among the children of Israel”
“both of man and of beast”
“it is mine”

“Joseph fell upon his father's face”
“and kissed him”

When thou saidst, Seek ye my face; my heart said unto thee, Thy face, Lord, will I seek.

Selah.

“Circumcise therefore the foreskin of your heart”
“the Lord thy God will circumcise thine heart”
“and the heart of thy seed”
“to love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul”
“that thou mayest live”
“On this wise ye shall bless the children of Israel, saying unto them”
“The Lord bless thee”
“and keep thee”
“The Lord make his face shine upon thee”
“be gracious unto thee”
“The Lord lift up his countenance upon thee”
“give thee peace”
“And they shall put my name upon the children of Israel”

“So that I come again to my father's house in peace”
“then shall the Lord be my God”
“of all that thou shalt give me I will surely give the tenth unto thee”
“he had peace on all sides round about him”
“Judah and Israel dwelt safely”
“every man under his vine and under his fig tree”
“from Dan even to Beersheba”
“all the days of Solomon”
“I will rend the kingdom out of the hand of Solomon”
“and will give ten tribes to thee”
“But he shall have one tribe for my servant David's sake”

“thou shalt spread abroad to the west”
“to the east”
“to the north”
“to the south”
“in thee and in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed”

And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to number them: and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be.
And he believed in the Lord; and he counted it to him for righteousness.

“Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars”
“if thou be able to number them”
“So shall thy seed be”

And the angel of the Lord called unto Abraham out of heaven the second time,
And said, By myself have I sworn, saith the Lord, for because thou hast done this thing, and hast not withheld thy son, thine only son:
That in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies;
And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice.

Sojourn in this land, and I will be with thee, and will bless thee; for unto thee, and unto thy seed, I will give all these countries, and I will perform the oath which I sware unto Abraham thy father;
And I will make thy seed to multiply as the stars of heaven, and will give unto thy seed all these countries; and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed;

And God Almighty bless thee, and make thee fruitful, and multiply thee, that thou mayest be a multitude of people;
And give thee the blessing of Abraham, to thee, and to thy seed with thee; that thou mayest inherit the land wherein thou art a stranger, which God gave unto Abraham.

And, behold, the Lord stood above it, and said, I am the Lord God of Abraham thy father, and the God of Isaac: the land whereon thou liest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed;

And, behold, the Lord stood above it, and said, I am the Lord God of Abraham thy father, and the God of Isaac: the land whereon thou liest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed;
And thy seed shall be as the dust of the earth, and thou shalt spread abroad to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south: and in thee and in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed.

“thy seed shall be as the dust of the earth”
“thou shalt spread abroad to the west”
“to the east”
“to the north”
“to the south”
“in thee and in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed”

"My family has roots there, something that I don't have in Georgia or Boston."

Yes, but you can, if you're lucky, put down new roots.

I was born in Chicago, grew up in a Boston suburb, and went to college and law school in Massachusetts.

Not an adherent of any Abrahamic religion, I lived in Israel for a year after college and loved the country - I almost put down roots there, but came back to the U.S.

Then I lived and worked as a lawyer in the Virgin Islands and Washington D.C. No roots put down there and they didn't seem like home.

In 1968, sick of D.C. summers, our government's carrying on of the Vietnam war, and the riots that burned down part of the city, I took a law job in Vermont and have been here ever since - 40 years.

I felt completely at home in Vt. on my first day
there. Got elected to the Vermont legislature in my fourth year in the state. Met my wife (an expatriate North Carolinian) in Vermont and our two kids were born here.

My conclusion: you have to find a place that's hospitable and provides fertile soil for your own particular new roots.

Vt.'s for me. Hope you find your place soon.
