Representative Values

Recently in the news attention has turned to Oklahoma Rep. Sally Kern. She was being recorded while she went on what at best is a rant and at worst a “speech” that could end her political career. I suppose she thought she was in the company of people who shared her views, and decided she would let her hair down about the state of the nation and how homosexuals are a danger to America. The following are a few of her enlightened views:

“Studies show no society that has totally embraced homosexuality has lasted for more than, you know, a few decades. . .”

“I honestly think it’s the biggest threat our nation has, even more so than terrorism or Islam. . .”

“You know, Gays are infiltrating city councils. . . Did you know that the city council of Eureka Springs is now controlled by gays? They are winning elections.”

“One of my colleagues said, we don’t have a gay problem in our community… well you know what, that is so dumb. If you have cancer in your little toe, do you just say that I’m going to forget about it since the rest of you is fine? It spreads! This stuff is deadly and it is spreading. It will destroy our young people and it will destroy this nation.”

I support anyone has a right to free speech. I even support her refusal to recant her statements based on religious grounds. But there is a difference between free speech and hate speech. And we have a serious problem when an elected official spews false speculation, paranoia and opinion and tries to pass them off as facts. Last time I checked the Roman and Greek society stretched longer than a few decades. And to compare gays to terrorists is obscene and wrong. Terrorists inflict terror on society and are malicious in their intent to hurt others. How dare you infer that Americans who happen to be gay are trying to inflict terror on our society, while at the same time many gay Americans are fighting and dying in a war that combats terrorism, not that the military wants to admit that.

If homosexuals strike fear into the heart of Christians like Kern, I hypothesize that it is because they are misinformed about gay people in general. FEAR makes us say and do terrible things: “I honestly think it’s the biggest threat our nation has, even more so than terrorism or Islam.” Come on now. I think it’s important for people of faith, to stand up and say that hate is not a Christian value.
