Welcome to the Navy, Ma'am

Question: How do you like your freedom?

Answer: Soaring overhead at 600 miles per hour.

I am recovering from the sensory overload that is the Blue Angels.

Today was a day straight out The Onion. The Boyfriend is to graduate from the Naval Academy on Friday, so this Commissioning Week is a patriotic bonanza. And with good reason.

His college experience has been intense in a way that mine has not. I have struggled to perform in an academic free-for-all, where my professors do not require attendance nor know my name; he has attended class scrupulously with the certain knowledge that his tardiness or absence would get him fired. Where I subsisted on the ever-economical eggs and pasta diet, cooked alone after a day of school and work, he schlepped to King Hall with his four thousand classmates where he was often presented with every variety of fried food imaginable. In short: I struggled with the lack of accountability; he was aggravated by the oppressive requirements. Although Georgetown and Annapolis are 35 miles from each other, they are a world apart.

The Boyfriend says that if Georgetown is like the United Nations, then the Naval Academy is like Congress. But, I ask, is Congress this good looking?

By the way, ladies, if you ever need a quick pick me up, or want to feel like a goddess among mere mortals, take a stroll around the academy --a magical place where midshipman run to open doors for you, strangers smile at you, and meals are purchased for you. The guys around Annapolis are so helpful! A civilian girl is a rare find during the Dark Ages, and they’ll show you their gratitude.

I like the attention, so sue me. But while I still have your ear, dear military personnel, might I make an appeal for peace? I was speaking to a mid on Sunday who is going to flight school in Pensacola, and I asked him who he thought we would be fighting when we got out of flight school. “To be honest with you Liz,” he replied, “I hope we’re still in Iraq.”

I hope for peace.

If their job is to fight where the government sends them, then our job as civilians is to labor endlessly for a more compassionate, less hostile, more human world. I am under no illusions that this is an ideal that will ever be reached. But I must work towards it.

The job of the American military is to protect this country. That mentality implies that we should “get them (whoever ‘they’ are) there, before they get us here.” Somehow ‘they’ deserve less peace than us. As a follower of Christ, can I accept that?

So I will juxtapose these images, in the hopes that someone will tell me how to get these to communicate with one another:

--A Bumper sticker on a car today in Annapolis that read “If we love our others as ourselves, how can we kill them?”

--A man who walked past me on the yard, who wore a T-shirt with a picture of a bulldog and the words “Marines: Sinking our teeth into the Middle East”

--And little ol’ me, in a sun dress and big sunglasses –and a copy of the New York Times –unsure where to turn.
