Faith's Role in Coping with Cancer
Can faith prolong suffering in cancer patients?
That's the surprising and questionable conclusion of a new study by Dr. Andrea Phleps and the Dana Farber Cancer Institute. The study, published by the Journal of the American Medical Association, found that "cancer patients who use 'positive religious coping' -- collaborating with God to overcome illness -- are more likely to seek heroic measures in an attempt to prolong life."
The study interviewed 345 patients with advanced cancer. Thirty-one percent were determined to have "a high level of positive religious coping." The rest were felt to have a low level of positive religious coping. The high-coping patients were nearly four times more likely to be on ventilators at the end of their lives; they were three times more likely to receive intensive life-prolonging care during the last week of life. But the actual percentage of high-coping patients receiving end of life care was relatively small, only about 4 percent of all those surveyed.
There were three key variables that I didn't find in the study that may have confused its conclusions.
First, what were the ages of the patients who were interviewed? Young patients will usually do everything possible to overcome their disease, while patients over 70 will ususally opt for quality of life. Young patints often have families, spouses, children, loved ones they must take care of; they feel that life is just beginning. Older patients have seen life and done most the the things they wish to do.
Second, how many of the high-coping patients were religious fundamentalists? Fundamentalist Christians have a more definitive belief system in place, compared to progressive Christrians who are apt to have a less sharply defined belief system.
Third, and most important, how many were extroverts? Extroverts are proactive; they take action to fight their disease. Introverts are not as likely to take action; they are more likely to exist with their disease.
Dr. Bernie Siegal, a famous oncologist from Yale, suggested that his patients visualize something destroying their cancer -- for example, a seagull pecking away at the borders of tumors. This is easy for extroverts and very difficult for introverts. In prayer, extroverts prefer intercessory prayer and telling God what they want. Introverts usually pray "Thy Will be done." Neither way is wrong. But we must recognize that people deal with disease differently, and it's not entirely dependent upon "high or low level of religious coping."
I am fond of the story that Dr. Larry Dossey tells of an introverted woman who waited last in line to see him following one of his talks. She wanted him to know that 30 years ago she had undergone surgery for colon cancer and was told she had 6 months to live. Dr. Dossey asked her what she did, for she was an obvious survivor. She told him that she did nothing. She just lived with the faith that she was well.

What a fascinating story. I disagree strongly with the contentions of the study's authors. It seems to be judgmental and anti-religion to me.

Actually, it's simpler than that. 'Religion and faith' as defined by many *involve* some kind of strident belief that there is only one life and that
'coping' with suffering *is* synonymous with faith.
You know, people screaming and wailing and holding demonstrations about 'small government' being supposed to not let go of someone brain-dead of anorexia and an hour or three of hypoxia,...way too long... Still wanting to claim that the faithful should demand... what? Bodies kept 'alive' on machines for people to be pious over, cause of what...
Someone else's fear.
Some may *say* it's 'faith' to cling so, however expensively for the living.
I'm not so sure that's what 'faith' is.
Much is said to be 'faith' by some, which is simply about fear, and control. 'Faith' is to too many, some unspoken notion that no one is ever good enough, but must be 'forgiven' or be tortured eternally by 'goodness.'
Weird. Sketchy.
Given who gets to be called 'faithful' in America, if you wanna try and rationalize the descriptions, I'd ask, ...who that's actually called 'at peace' with their end, actually gets counted as 'faithful?'
It's a sad irony that panic over this study seems to be... Not about, 'Are we helping our dying,' but, 'Why doesn't demanding they hang on through 'faith' *work?*
What if these desires *aren't* what 'works?' What if you just call it lack of faith' if someone can let *go?*
*My* faith doesn't hold to that.

Collaborating with the "imaginary god" would be more accurate. But just plain old positive attitude works just as well.
No need to believe absurd fairy tales to get well. That's for the kiddies.

Colin - is gravity imaginary as well? You can no more see God than you can see gravity. But you can see the effects of gravity, just as you can see the effects of God's influence on the world. You can come up with alternate explanations for God's influence, but you can also come up with alternate explanations for gravity.
Scientists have been searching for the gravitron, and all the other stuff in quantum physics. I myself have not been a part of that search. I believe in protons and electrons on faith - I've not actually seen them myself. But I'm pretty darn sure that they are there.
Just because I've never actually seen an electron, does that make it imaginary? Or is it alright for me to believe in them on faith, without ever actually having seen them?
The big bang theory is .... a theory. If I believe in the big bang, am I believing in something imaginary? I didn't actually see the big bang myself...
