The Faith Divide

What's at Stake in Afghanistan

Afghanistan has become President Obama's war. He has committed 21,000 more troops there, re-oriented our understanding of Afghanistan to include Pakistan (foreign policy types like to call this the "Af-Pak" approach) and changed our strategy from nation building in Afghanistan to ensuring the region does not harbor international terrorists. In other words, President Obama has increased resources and lowered expectations.

This makes some sense considering how previous nations seeking to mold Afghanistan in their images - Britain and the Soviet Union - have fared there. But in his column in Sunday's New York Times, Tom Friedman puts a human face on a very difficult problem: girls going to school for the first time. He writes about his experience at the opening of one of Greg Mortensen's new girls' schools in a village in the Hindu Kush mountains, and why it made him think twice about saying we need to walk away from the war and leave the country altogether.

Like Friedman, I keep on wondering: what is the right intersection of America's strategic interest and moral responsibility in Afghanistan? Is it to prevent terrorists, or help little girls go to school, or both?

Other elements of our War on Terror and Aggression:

- Saddam, his sons and major henchmen have been deleted. Saddam's bravado about WMD was one of his major mistakes.

- Iran is being been contained. (beside containing the Sunni-Shiite civil war in Baghdad, that is the main reason we are in Iraq. And yes, essential oil continues to flow from the region.)

- Libya has become almost civil. Recently Libya agreed to pay $1.5 billion to the victims of their terrorist activities Apparently this new reality from an Islamic country has upset OBL and his “crazies” as they have threatened Libya. OBL sure is a disgrace to the world especially the Moslem world!!! Or is he???

- North Korea is still uncivil but is contained. With the opening up of rail traffic between North and South Korea after 50 years and with the assistance of the US Navy in retrieving NK ships and personnel hopefully a fresh sense of civility is afoot.

- North Korea was taken off the terrorist country list recently.

- Northern Ireland is finally at peace.

- The Jews and Palestinians are being separated by walls. Hopefully the walls will follow the 1948 UN accords. Unfortunately the Annapolis Peace Conference was not successful. Unfortunately the recent events in Gaza has put this situation back to “square one”. And this significant stupidity is driven by the mythical foundations of both religions!!!

- Bin Laden has been cornered under a rock in Western Pakistan since 9/11.

- Fanatical Islam has basically been contained to the Middle East but a wall between India and Pakistan would be a plus for world peace. Ditto for a wall between Afghanhistan and Pakistan.

- Timothy McVeigh was executed. Terry Nichols will follow soon.

- Eric Rudolph is spending three life terms in prison with no parole.

- Jim Jones, David Koresh, Kaczynski, the "nuns" from Rwanda, and the KKK were all dealt with and either eliminated themselves or are being punished.

- Islamic Sudan, Darfur and Somalia are still terror hot spots.

- The terror and torture of Muslims in Bosnia, Kosovo and Kuwait were ended by the proper application of the military forces of the USA and her freedom-loving friends. Radovan Karadzic was finally captured on 7/23/08 and is charged with genocide, crimes against humanity and violations of the law of war -- charges related to the 1992-1995 civil war that followed Bosnia-Herzegovina's secession from Yugoslavia.

- And of course the bloody terror brought about the Japanese, Nazis and Communists was with great difficulty eliminated by the good guys.

By declaring war against a weak and impoverished country like Afghanistan it has not only lowered its own dignity it has alienated itself from moderate Muslims. No one would approve if one uses sledge- hammer to kill a fly.

It is regrettable that America, which prides itself for values like freedom, democracy and human rights, has killed largest number of innocent people around the world after Second World War. Such behaviour naturally breeds terrorism in certain sections of population. Terrorism can never be fought with terrorism. This violence torn world needs more peace than ever before. America talks of freedom and democracy but freedom and democracy can flourish only if there is peace and justice in the whole world.

I couldn't agree with the panelist more. No one seems to want to answer his question regarding continued American presence in a country that doesn't want us there. The whole notion that the United States has a real interest in educating "little girls" is flawed as the United States has little interest in educating little American girls. Just take a hard look at an urban school system in the U.S.
I guess my concern is semantics. What does "educate" mean in this context and is the word tied to "terrorist" in the sense that "education" has something to do with making sure that there are no more people bent on using this military tactic against U.S. interest in Afghanistan. If the "education" and "terrorism" are linked in this way it is no wonder that there is such interest in the "little girls" as they rear the next generation. So if this is it, is it any wonder that the people of Afghanistan have no interest in the United States' interest in the "education" of its daughters.

By recognizing the "angelic" foundation of Islam and therefore its reliance on mythical "pretty wingie thingies" would end the conflict in Afghanistan, Iraq and Iran. Unfortunately, this will not happen quickly because the Taliban are basically illiterate and severely brainwashed by their imams who appear to be not only religious leaders but also drug lords.

Eboo and Friedman,

America has a moral responsibility in Irag for an unjust war and its consequences.

Muslims, not Americans, have a responsibility to their girls and women. Girls are suffering not just in Afgahnistan, but also in Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Algeria etc. Americans cannot take moral responsibility for trying to change this, Muslims have to. Muslim culture is the problem, not American culture.

Eboo Patel should be writing a critique of the Koran and Muslim culture, which is the source of the problem. This will start the appropriate dialogue WITHIN the Muslim world. Stop wondering about America's "moral responsibility" to little girls around the globe; start writing the appropriate criticism of Muslim culture.

Or is Ebrahim (Eboo) Patel afraid to honestly criticize Islam and the Koran? What's the worst that could happen for just voicing an opinion against Islam? - just ask Salman Rushdie who fled England for refuge in India.

The question is not either or; to prevent terrorists OR help little girls go to school. It is dismantle the terrorists to help little girls go to school, and open that society to the world. You know that Taliban are not partial to educating women or anyone else.
