I attended Chapman University as an undergraduate student. The campus Chaplin was Dennis Short, a person with great personal integrity, and a love for fellow human beings. He organized a religious retreat where he had invited Muslims, Christians, Jews, Mormans, Buddhists, and Hindus. Nearly 20 years have passed since that meeting, but what I do remember is that we were very respectful of our humanity, and respectful of our differences, but we did walk out with a profound appreciation for our own faiths, and a commitment not to prejudge any other religion.

Here are two suggestions for Muslims like Victoria and Eboo Patel who would like us to believe that Islam is a decent faith and that Muhammad was not a criminal.

1) Condemn loudly, publicly, and clearly the ban Saudi Arabia places on the entry of non-Muslims into Mecca and Medina and the prohibition on public prayer and the building of non-Muslim places of worship by non-Muslims in the kingdom. Then call for a boycott of the hajj by all Muslims until these shameful prohibitions on non-Muslims are removed. Until such time as Saudi Arabia corrects its evil laws, ask all Muslims to contribute the money they would have spent on the hajj towards a fund for building a university for advanced secular studies, a Harvard type, that all humans can attend. Or maybe secular elementary education for Muslim children. Perhaps locate the university in Turkey or Egypt. Muslims waste billions on the hajj every year, money better spent on education.

2)Organize a march every month by millions of Muslims condemning terrorism by Muslims. Muslims readily march protesting cartoons about Muhammad and I am sure if rightly guided they will march to condemn violence by Muslims.

These two steps, especially the first, will go a long way in enhancing the reputation of Muslims. Mr. Patel can start by condemning the Saudi laws about Mecca and Medina mentioned above.

My question is why does Newsweek and why does WP allow this Eboo Patel to continue to propagate Islam on this board? Islam is a violent religion found by a violent and insane man.

Jerusalem - Israeli police are investigating allegations that, over recent years, a gang of youths who immigrated from the former Soviet Union who espouse neo-Nazi ideology have attacked foreign workers, drawn swastikas on walls and vandalized synagogues. Muslim Family Experiences Nazareth Village

Tom Massey and I visited Nazareth Village over this past weekend to experience a living museum devoted to authentic enactment of village life during the period of boyhood of Jesus. It is located by the YMCA in the center of the city of Nazareth. After the inspiring and educational guided tour by an Arab Christian, Tom and I visited with museum's volunteer director, my good friend Shirley Roth. She shared a story about a Muslim leader who visited the village with a group of other business people from Haifa. He was delighted with the quality of the guided tour and restoration of an important era and asked if he could return with his family and children to share the experience. He returned with his family and children a few weeks later. As they walked through the tour the children asked many questions about Jesus as a boy. It turned out to be a very positive experience. The father was very happy that his children could learn about one of the most important prophets of the Muslim faith...Jesus, the Prophet of Love.

The story is very powerful and illustrates a current living example how people of faith can learn about Jesus without being compelled to change their faith.

I agree that we need more dialogs between the faiths and better understanding. But muslims have a fairshare blame for the the current status of Islam today.

All the major religions (> 50 million adherents) of the world have serious naysayers within the community, except Islam. The most I could find are, apologists like yourself, who believe, or at least pretend to believe, that there is nothing wrong within Koran itself or with Mohammad's life and his teachings. According to them, it is the fault of the followers and that of the interpretations of Koran.

No set of beliefs and morals are absolute for all time to come and for all of humanity. Our values change with time and circumstances. Other religions have made progress due to understanding this fundamental principle. Unfortunately Islam hasn't. I guess, it is only 1400 years old, and hence somewhat immature in comparison.

Until such date, when islam and its adherents will tolerate serious islamic iconoclasts and confer upon them the same status as the rest of muslims the current state of affairs is bound to continue. There is no doubt that there are short comings in other religions as well, but they have checks and balances which rest in the society and the community which is fairly secular. This is conspicuously absent in the muslim community.
