Divine Impulses

Divine Impulses: William Boykin

Retired Army Lt. General William Boykin was involved in many perilous operations during his 30-year military career –missions that included the Desert One attempted rescue of Iranian hostages in 1980, Grenada, and serving as commander of Delta Force during Black Hawk Down in Somalia.

Despite all he has endured, Boykin says one of his most traumatic fights came in 2003, when he found himself the subject of a media firestorm after comments he made to a Christian audience were publicized. According to accounts of his speech, Boykin referenced a Somali Muslim warlord he encountered in battle and said "I knew my God was bigger than his. I knew that my God was a real god and his was an idol."

Now Boykin has written a book about his military career and public ordeal.

»Watch Boykin talk about his understanding that America is “ordained by God to be a light in a world of darkness,” and the role he played as a Christian soldier, with On Faith’s Sally Quinn.

“Then the magicians said unto Pharaoh”
“This is the finger of God”
“I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your sons cast them out”
“I with the finger of God cast out devils”
“no doubt the kingdom of God is come upon you”

And the Lord said unto Moses, Say unto Aaron, Stretch out thy rod, and smite the dust of the land, that it may become lice throughout all the land of Egypt.
And they did so; for Aaron stretched out his hand with his rod, and smote the dust of the earth, and it became lice in man, and in beast; all the dust of the land became lice throughout all the land of Egypt.
And the magicians did so with their enchantments to bring forth lice, but they could not: so there were lice upon man, and upon beast.
Then the magicians said unto Pharaoh, This is the finger of God: and Pharaoh's heart was hardened, and he hearkened not unto them; as the Lord had said.
And the Lord said unto Moses, Rise up early in the morning, and stand before Pharaoh; lo, he cometh forth to the water; and say unto him, Thus saith the Lord, Let my people go, that they may serve me.

“Aaron stretched out his hand with his rod”
“and smote the dust of the earth”
“Then the magicians said unto Pharaoh”
“This is the finger of God”
“Pharaoh's heart was hardened, and he hearkened not unto them”

And he gave unto Moses, when he had made an end of communing with him upon mount Sinai, two tables of testimony, tables of stone, written with the finger of God.

“two tables of testimony”
“tables of stone”
“written with the finger of God”

When I was gone up into the mount to receive the tables of stone, even the tables of the covenant which the Lord made with you, then I abode in the mount forty days and forty nights, I neither did eat bread nor drink water:
And the Lord delivered unto me two tables of stone written with the finger of God; and on them was written according to all the words, which the Lord spake with you in the mount out of the midst of the fire in the day of the assembly.
And it came to pass at the end of forty days and forty nights, that the Lord gave me the two tables of stone, even the tables of the covenant.
And the Lord said unto me, Arise, get thee down quickly from hence; for thy people which thou hast brought forth out of Egypt have corrupted themselves; they are quickly turned aside out of the way which I commanded them; they have made them a molten image.
Furthermore the Lord spake unto me, saying, I have seen this people, and, behold, it is a stiffnecked people:
Let me alone, that I may destroy them, and blot out their name from under heaven: and I will make of thee a nation mightier and greater than they.
So I turned and came down from the mount, and the mount burned with fire: and the two tables of the covenant were in my two hands.
And I looked, and, behold, ye had sinned against the Lord your God, and had made you a molten calf: ye had turned aside quickly out of the way which the Lord had commanded you.
And I took the two tables, and cast them out of my two hands, and brake them before your eyes.
And I fell down before the Lord, as at the first, forty days and forty nights: I did neither eat bread, nor drink water, because of all your sins which ye sinned, in doing wickedly in the sight of the Lord, to provoke him to anger.

“the Lord delivered unto me two tables of stone written with the finger of God”
“Arise, get thee down quickly from hence; for thy people which thou hast brought forth out of Egypt have corrupted themselves”
“they have made them a molten image”
“And I took the two tables”
“cast them out of my two hands”
“brake them before your eyes”

And of Levi he said, Let thy Thummim and thy Urim be with thy holy one, whom thou didst prove at Massah, and with whom thou didst strive at the waters of Meribah;
Who said unto his father and to his mother, I have not seen him; neither did he acknowledge his brethren, nor knew his own children: for they have observed thy word, and kept thy covenant.
They shall teach Jacob thy judgments, and Israel thy law: they shall put incense before thee, and whole burnt sacrifice upon thine altar.
Bless, Lord, his substance, and accept the work of his hands; smite through the loins of them that rise against him, and of them that hate him, that they rise not again.

“They shall teach Jacob thy judgments, and Israel thy law”
“Bless, Lord, his substance, and accept the work of his hands”
“smite through the loins of them that rise against him”
“of them that hate him, that they rise not again”

And he said unto them, What counsel give ye that we may answer this people, who have spoken to me, saying, Make the yoke which thy father did put upon us lighter?
And the young men that were grown up with him spake unto him, saying, Thus shalt thou speak unto this people that spake unto thee, saying, Thy father made our yoke heavy, but make thou it lighter unto us; thus shalt thou say unto them, My little finger shall be thicker than my father's loins.
And now whereas my father did lade you with a heavy yoke, I will add to your yoke: my father hath chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.
So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam the third day, as the king had appointed, saying, Come to me again the third day.

“the young men that were grown up with him spake unto him”
“Thy father made our yoke heavy”
“but make thou it lighter unto us”
“My little finger shall be thicker than my father's loins”
“now whereas my father did lade you with a heavy yoke”
“I will add to your yoke”
“my father hath chastised you with whips”
“I will chastise you with scorpions”
“So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam the third day”
“Come to me again the third day”

Speak unto Rehoboam, the son of Solomon, king of Judah, and unto all the house of Judah and Benjamin, and to the remnant of the people, saying,
Thus saith the Lord, Ye shall not go up, nor fight against your brethren the children of Israel: return every man to his house; for this thing is from me. They hearkened therefore to the word of the Lord, and returned to depart, according to the word of the Lord.

“Speak unto Rehoboam”
“unto all the house of Judah and Benjamin”
“Ye shall not go up, nor fight against your brethren the children of Israel”
“return every man to his house; for this thing is from me”

If Satan also be divided against himself, how shall his kingdom stand? because ye say that I cast out devils through Beelzebub.
And if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your sons cast them out? therefore shall they be your judges.
But if I with the finger of God cast out devils, no doubt the kingdom of God is come upon you.

“I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your sons cast them out”
“I with the finger of God cast out devils”
“no doubt the kingdom of God is come upon you”

And Jesus walked in the temple in Solomon's porch.
Then came the Jews round about him, and said unto him, How long dost thou make us to doubt? If thou be the Christ, tell us plainly.
Jesus answered them, I told you, and ye believed not: the works that I do in my Father's name, they bear witness of me.
But ye believe not, because ye are not of my sheep, as I said unto you.
My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:
And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.
My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand.
I and my Father are one.
Then the Jews took up stones again to stone him.

“I told you, and ye believed not”
“the works that I do in my Father's name, they bear witness of me”
“But ye believe not, because ye are not of my sheep”
“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me”
“I give unto them eternal life”

And in those days Peter stood up in the midst of the disciples, and said, (the number of names together were about an hundred and twenty,)
Men and brethren, this scripture must needs have been fulfilled, which the Holy Ghost by the mouth of David spake before concerning Judas, which was guide to them that took Jesus.
For he was numbered with us, and had obtained part of this ministry.

“in those days Peter stood up in the midst of the disciples”
“the number of names together were about an hundred and twenty”
“the mouth of David spake before concerning Judas”
“which was guide to them that took Jesus”
“For he was numbered with us, and had obtained part of this ministry”

But there rose up certain of the sect of the Pharisees which believed, saying, That it was needful to circumcise them, and to command them to keep the law of Moses.
And the apostles and elders came together for to consider of this matter.
And when there had been much disputing, Peter rose up, and said unto them, Men and brethren, ye know how that a good while ago God made choice among us, that the Gentiles by my mouth should hear the word of the gospel, and believe.

“there rose up certain of the sect of the Pharisees”
“That it was needful to circumcise them”
“to command them to keep the law of Moses”
“Peter rose up, and said unto them”
“ye know how that a good while ago God made choice among us”
“that the Gentiles by my mouth should hear the word”
“and believe”

Good and upright is the Lord: therefore will he teach sinners in the way.
Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto thee.

The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple.
The statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes.
The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring for ever: the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether.
More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.
Moreover by them is thy servant warned: and in keeping of them there is great reward.

My strength is dried up like a potsherd; and my tongue cleaveth to my jaws; and thou hast brought me into the dust of death.
For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have inclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet.

“For dogs have compassed me”
“the assembly of the wicked have inclosed me”
“they pierced my hands and my feet”

“Peter rose up, and said unto them”
“ye know how that a good while ago God made choice among us”
“that the Gentiles by my mouth should hear the word”
“and believe”

In that day shall the Lord defend the inhabitants of Jerusalem; and he that is feeble among them at that day shall be as David; and the house of David shall be as God, as the angel of the Lord before them.
And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem.
And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn.

“In that day shall the Lord defend the inhabitants of Jerusalem”
“he that is feeble among them at that day shall be as David”
“the house of David shall be as God”
“as the angel of the Lord before them”
“I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem”

“they shall look upon me whom they have pierced”
“they shall mourn for him”
“as one mourneth for his only son”
“shall be in bitterness for him”
“as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn”

Samuel
“In that day shall the Lord defend the inhabitants of Jerusalem”
So Samuel turned again after Saul; and Saul worshipped the Lord.
Then said Samuel, Bring ye hither to me Agag the king of the Amalekites. And Agag came unto him delicately. And Agag said, Surely the bitterness of death is past.
And Samuel said, As thy sword hath made women childless, so shall thy mother be childless among women. And Samuel hewed Agag in pieces before the Lord in Gilgal.

Saul
“he that is feeble among them at that day shall be as David”
Then Samuel said unto Saul, Stay, and I will tell thee what the Lord hath said to me this night. And he said unto him, Say on.
And Samuel said, When thou wast little in thine own sight, wast thou not made the head of the tribes of Israel, and the Lord anointed thee king over Israel?
And the Lord sent thee on a journey, and said, Go and utterly destroy the sinners the Amalekites, and fight against them until they be consumed.
Wherefore then didst thou not obey the voice of the Lord, but didst fly upon the spoil, and didst evil in the sight of the Lord?

David
“the house of David shall be as God”
Praise ye the Lord. Sing unto the Lord a new song, and his praise in the congregation of saints.
Let Israel rejoice in him that made him: let the children of Zion be joyful in their King.
Let them praise his name in the dance: let them sing praises unto him with the timbrel and harp.
For the Lord taketh pleasure in his people: he will beautify the meek with salvation.
Let the saints be joyful in glory: let them sing aloud upon their beds.
Let the high praises of God be in their mouth, and a two-edged sword in their hand;
To execute vengeance upon the heathen, and punishments upon the people;
To bind their kings with chains, and their nobles with fetters of iron;
To execute upon them the judgment written: this honour have all his saints. Praise ye the Lord.

Solomon
“as the angel of the Lord before them”
Plead my cause, O Lord, with them that strive with me: fight against them that fight against me.
Take hold of shield and buckler, and stand up for mine help.
Draw out also the spear, and stop the way against them that persecute me: say unto my soul, I am thy salvation.
Let them be confounded and put to shame that seek after my soul: let them be turned back and brought to confusion that devise my hurt.
Let them be as chaff before the wind: and let the angel of the Lord chase them.
Let their way be dark and slippery: and let the angel of the Lord persecute them.
For without cause have they hid for me their net in a pit, which without cause they have digged for my soul.
Let destruction come upon him at unawares; and let his net that he hath hid catch himself: into that very destruction let him fall.
And my soul shall be joyful in the Lord: it shall rejoice in his salvation.

Rehoboam
“I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem”
“Aaron stretched out his hand with his rod”
“and smote the dust of the earth”
“Then the magicians said unto Pharaoh”
“This is the finger of God”
“Pharaoh's heart was hardened, and he hearkened not unto them”
“They shall teach Jacob thy judgments, and Israel thy law”
“Bless, Lord, his substance, and accept the work of his hands”
“smite through the loins of them that rise against him”
“of them that hate him, that they rise not again”
“My little finger shall be thicker than my father's loins”
“now whereas my father did lade you with a heavy yoke”
“I will add to your yoke”
“my father hath chastised you with whips”
“I will chastise you with scorpions”
“So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam the third day”
“Come to me again the third day”
“I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your sons cast them out”
“I with the finger of God cast out devils”
“no doubt the kingdom of God is come upon you”

Then answered Zophar the Naamathite, and said,
Should not the multitude of words be answered? and should a man full of talk be justified?
Should thy lies make men hold their peace? and when thou mockest, shall no man make thee ashamed?
For thou hast said, My doctrine is pure, and I am clean in thine eyes.
But oh that God would speak, and open his lips against thee;
And that he would shew thee the secrets of wisdom, that they are double to that which is! know therefore that God exacteth of thee less than thine iniquity deserveth.
Canst thou by searching find out God? canst thou find out the Almighty unto perfection?

“For thou hast said, My doctrine is pure”
“that he would shew thee the secrets of wisdom”
“that they are double to that which is”
“Canst thou by searching find out God”
“canst thou find out the Almighty unto perfection”

Harold,

I'm sure you are quite proud that you have destroyed any possible conversation here with your uber-long posts.

Nobody will read them, even believers such as me.
Endless quotations from the bible only bore and offend.
You have offered nothing, nothing of substance.
But that is meaningless to you, I realize.
Once again, I have wasted my time
Please get off of here, and never come back, unless you can really contribute.

Romulus (c. 771 BC[1]–c. 717 BC) and Remus (c. 771 BC–c. 753 BC) are the traditional founders of Rome, appearing in Roman mythology as the twin[2] sons of the priestess Rhea Silvia, fathered by the god of war, Mars. According to the tradition recorded as history by Plutarch and Livy, Romulus served as the first King of Rome.
There, they were nursed by a wolf, Lupa in Latin. Lupa is a name for the priestesses of a fox goddess, leading to an alternative theory that the "she wolf" was human. This term later was used as a designation for female prostitutes, which may have a similar religious origin that was turned into derision. They were nurtured underneath a fig tree and were fed by a woodpecker. Both animals were sacred to Mars.
Romulus and Remus were then discovered by Faustulus, a shepherd for Amulius, who brought the children to his home. Faustulus and his wife, Acca Larentia, raised the boys as their own. The roots of her name imply a religious cult of an earth mother. Some mythological traditions have her as the prostitute 'she-wolf' who suckled Rome's founders.[6]
Romulus slew Remus over a dispute about which one of the two brothers had the support of the local deities to rule the new city and give it his name. The name they gave the city was Rome. Supposedly, Romulus had stood on one hill and Remus another, and a circle of birds flew over Romulus, signifying that he should be king. After founding Rome, Romulus not only created the Roman Legions and the Roman Senate, but also added citizens to his new city by abducting the women of the neighboring Sabine tribes, which resulted in the mixture of the Sabines and Romans into one people.
Yet another tradition relates also that Romulus and Remus were nursed by the Wolf-Goddess Lupa or Luperca, who was identified with Acca Larentia, whose rapport with wolves kept them from harming the sheep, but add that Luperca's husband is the Wolf-and-Shepherd-God Lupercus who brought fertility to the flocks.

“sons of the priestess Rhea Silvia, fathered by the god of war, Mars”
“Some mythological traditions have her as the prostitute 'she-wolf' who suckled Rome's founders”
“Luperca's husband is the Wolf-and-Shepherd-God Lupercus who brought fertility to the flocks.”

And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ.
I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able.

“I have fed you with milk”

Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.
For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock.

“after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock”

Of whom we have many things to say, and hard to be uttered, seeing ye are dull of hearing.
For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat.
For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe.
But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

“first principles of the oracles of God”
“become such as have need of milk”
“For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness”
“by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil”

“sons of the priestess Rhea Silvia, fathered by the god of war, Mars”
“Luperca's husband is the Wolf-and-Shepherd-God Lupercus who brought fertility to the flocks.”

“the moving creature that hath life”
“fowl that may fly above the earth”
“the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature”
“harmless as doves”
“he that entereth in by the door is the shepherd of the sheep” “thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field”
“the sheep hear his voice” “the Wolf-and-Shepherd-God Lupercus” “Abel was a keeper of sheep”
“the sheep follow him: for they know his voice.” “the god of war, Mars” “destroy all the children of Sheth”

Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them.
For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple.
For your obedience is come abroad unto all men. I am glad therefore on your behalf: but yet I would have you wise unto that which is good, and simple concerning evil.
And the God of peace shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.

Whose end is destruction, whose God is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame, who mind earthly things.

“ye therefore wise as serpents”
“out of the fish's belly”
“out of the belly of hell”

"I knew my God was bigger than his. I knew that my God was a real god and his was an idol."

Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber.
But he that entereth in by the door is the shepherd of the sheep.
To him the porter openeth; and the sheep hear his voice: and he calleth his own sheep by name, and leadeth them out.
And when he putteth forth his own sheep, he goeth before them, and the sheep follow him: for they know his voice.

“he that entereth in by the door is the shepherd of the sheep”
“the sheep hear his voice”
“the sheep follow him: for they know his voice.”

I have not written unto you because ye know not the truth, but because ye know it, and that no lie is of the truth.
Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son.

“ye know not the truth”
“because ye know it”
“that no lie is of the truth”

For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.

“we have the mind of Christ”

Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.

“I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves”
“ye therefore wise as serpents”
“harmless as doves”

In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.
And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven.
And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good.
And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth.
And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind: and it was so.
And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind, and every thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind: and God saw that it was good.

And the Lord God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life:

“thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field”

And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life;
Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field;
In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.
And Adam called his wife's name Eve; because she was the mother of all living.
Unto Adam also and to his wife did the Lord God make coats of skins, and clothed them.

“Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee”
“Eve; because she was the mother of all living”
“Lord God make coats of skins, and clothed them”

And she again bare his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.

“Abel was a keeper of sheep”

This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day that God created man, in the likeness of God made he him;
Male and female created he them; and blessed them, and called their name Adam, in the day when they were created.
And Adam lived an hundred and thirty years, and begat a son in his own likeness, after his image; and called his name Seth:

“that God created man, in the likeness of God made he him”
“blessed them”
“begat a son in his own likeness, after his image; and called his name Seth”

He hath said, which heard the words of God, and knew the knowledge of the most High, which saw the vision of the Almighty, falling into a trance, but having his eyes open:
I shall see him, but not now: I shall behold him, but not nigh: there shall come a Star out of Jacob, and a Sceptre shall rise out of Israel, and shall smite the corners of Moab, and destroy all the children of Sheth.

“the vision of the Almighty”
“destroy all the children of Sheth”

Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,
And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.
Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:
Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.

“be wise, they became fools”
“into an image made like to corruptible man”
“to birds”
“fourfooted beasts”
“creeping things”
“worshipped and served the creature”

But what saith the answer of God unto him? I have reserved to myself seven thousand men, who have not bowed the knee to the image of Baal.

“bowed the knee to the image of Baal”

In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them

“the god of this world hath blinded the minds”
“Christ, who is the image of God”

Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature

“the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature”

Then Jonah prayed unto the Lord his God out of the fish's belly,
And said, I cried by reason of mine affliction unto the Lord, and he heard me; out of the belly of hell cried I, and thou heardest my voice.
For thou hadst cast me into the deep, in the midst of the seas; and the floods compassed me about: all thy billows and thy waves passed over me.

“out of the fish's belly”
“out of the belly of hell”

For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

“three days and three nights in the whale's belly”
“so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth”

I said in mine heart concerning the estate of the sons of man, that God might manifest them, and that they might see that they themselves are beasts.

“the estate of the sons of man”
“they might see that they themselves are beasts”

Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?

“Ye serpents”
“how can ye escape the damnation of hell”

Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?
And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden:
But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.
And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:
For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.

“the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field”
“the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die”
“God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof”
“ye shall be as gods”

Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you.
Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.
For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed.
He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him.
As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father: so he that eateth me, even he shall live by me.
This is that bread which came down from heaven: not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead: he that eateth of this bread shall live for ever.
These things said he in the synagogue, as he taught in Capernaum.

“Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you”
“Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life”
“He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him”
“he that eateth of this bread shall live for ever”
“as he taught in Capernaum”

Now when Jesus had heard that John was cast into prison, he departed into Galilee;
And leaving Nazareth, he came and dwelt in Capernaum, which is upon the sea coast, in the borders of Zabulon and Nephthalim:
That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying,
The land of Zabulon, and the land of Nephthalim, by the way of the sea, beyond Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles;
The people which sat in darkness saw great light; and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death light is sprung up.

“he came and dwelt in Capernaum”
“Galilee of the Gentiles”
“shadow of death light is sprung up”

And the gospel must first be published among all nations.

“the gospel must first be published among all nations”

And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.

“Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature”

And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.

“this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness”
“then shall the end come”

I beheld then because of the voice of the great words which the horn spake: I beheld even till the beast was slain, and his body destroyed, and given to the burning flame.
As concerning the rest of the beasts, they had their dominion taken away: yet their lives were prolonged for a season and time.
I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days, and they brought him near before him.
And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him: his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed.

“the rest of the beasts, they had their dominion taken away”
“their lives were prolonged for a season and time.”
“the Son of man came”
“there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him”
“his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away”
“his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed”

paul:

The issue has never so much been religion. Rather, this is the issue: that one should use religion as a PRETENSE for gain. Mind you, as to my personal beliefs, they are inconsequential. However, I am somewhat familiar with the New Testament and I'm sure somewhere in it it does stipulate that murder is, to put it best, an act worthy of SEVERE punishment. This general is not a madman. He knows what he is doing. Moreover, NO country can be the "Light of the WORLD". That is a FALLACY because it implies that the individuals making up the country in question are "RIGHTEOUS". He is simply employing a common tactic to justify political stratagems and moral inconsistencies. It is as STUPID as someone saying, "I flossed today in the name of ________(fill in the name of any deity you esteem)".

Fate:

I just read the Wikipedia entry for Boykin ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_G._Boykin ). What it says shows Boykin to be a fanatic. He even finds God in failure. His wife left him calling him a religious fanatic. But what surprised me most was his participation in some of America's largest military failures, such as the Iranian hostage rescue attempt and Somalia.

One cannot serve in a military chain of command but have a superior you obey above the chain. He claims to have talked with the Holy Spirit. He should have been removed from service when his fanatism became known.

Terra Gazelle:

Boykin wore his uniform while making the statement in that church. He was then talking as the government, us. He should have been drummed out of the military with a dishonerable.

Those of all religions and none have fought and died for this country...he disrespected my father who fought and was wounded in WW2, fighting for the people of the globe. He did not fight for Christians...he founght to save others and he did not get a bio first.

Boydin is a facist wrapping himself in the American flag, with a bible in one hand and a gun in the other. Dispicable. Treasonous. Ugly hearted. It is time for a Change!

kgotthardt:

"God" never wants a "holy war" from any nation. If you think your "God" does, it's probably not "God" you are listening to. For shame.

mike l:

Somewhere in my 12 years of Catholic schooling, I must have missed the ninth Beatitude-Blesses are those who would kill in my name, for they shall be considered good Christians.
I do remember Jesus on the Cross saying, "Father, forgive them.", not "Smite those lousy Romans and Jews for putting me up here!"
I'm all for defending my country, but don't bring Jesus into it. If He wanted to take sides, then one wave of His hand would settle all disputes.

moe:

To kill in the name of God, sounds like an oxymoron, except to a psychopath.....

a reason for living, I will spend my life killing for God, how reasonable..

Aly:

As a Christian, I couldn't disagree with the general more. Jesus came to announce the in-breaking of the Kingdom of God, a kingdom marked by peace, humility, (non-violent) self-sacrifice, and most of all love- especially love of enemies. The general seems to believe in a different kingdom- one that needs to be defended by swords and finds its fullest expression in the United States of America.

The kingdom of God knows no national boundaries. God loves Iraqis no less than (s)he loves Americans. We who desire to be members of God's kingdom are called to take up our crosses, not our swords or guns. (In other words, we must be willing to be victims of state-sanctioned violence, but never perpetuators of it.)

Long live the Slaughtered Lamb!

Mike:

Any man that would exploit religion for his personal financial and political ends is a bum. Putin, Boykin, Karadzic ... all bums. Just as with those Russians and Serbs, exploiters of religion like Boykin are all over the U.S. military, too. Fortunately, most of the American bible-thumpers are extraordinarily stupid, so they are easily spotted, even when they're not making venal asses of themselves.

Anonymous 2:

The general bases his life and his decision to kill for 'Jesus and country' on one line Jesus sarcastically proclaimed. The rest of the New testament is simply dismissed. Same with his 'pastor'.

He and his military pastor need to be rehabilitated but the guys with the keys to the cell where they belongs for now are their bosses, and many agree with them.

Reading the comments here at least provides reason for hope.

For once US atheists and true Christians agree.

Concerned The Christian Now Liberated:

Retired "General" Boykin is another good example of someone who sees how to make a fast "book buck" by being controversial. And being a "redneck", bigoted, Christian, bible thumper, this was easy to do. He needs to be quickly "Crossanized" before he runs for political office or becomes even more "evangelical" and gets his own TV show.

Jaybird:

Is this kinda where the phrase, "Kill 'em all and let God sort 'em out" comes from?

Janko1:

Two facts:
Even in WW2 the German soldier were carried on their belts:
Gott mit uns - God with us.

Bush is the first responsible for the Iraq war,
where were killed 4.000 American and some hundred Thousand Iraq people,
even more wounded and more than 4 Million people were displaced.
And there is now the big hate between the Iraqis.

The commendment says:
Thous shall not kill!
But the first priest of Catholic Church celebrated his birthday with Bush.

TJ:

Somebody lock this lunatic up before he hurts somebody.

Oh, wait.

rec123:

I find it difficult to understand the logic of "christians" like Boykin who believe that their God now wants them to kill the persons whom they believe that their God had only recently created.

mjo757:

Uh, I don't think Jesus wants you to kill for him buddy. In fact he wants you to do the exact opposite! This old testament crap really makes the US look infantile. I thought the Christians knew better? Didn't Jesus speak to change all that? Isn't the what "Christian" means.....a follower of Christ?!

L.Kurt Engelhart:

"Gen. William Boykin says why he fought, and was willing to kill, for Christ and country"

How is this different from your ordinary terrorist?

Vince Porter:

Thous shall not kill...except by government permission.

Nativson:

This is exactly how the situation in Bosnia developed: Some religious nut is given a forum by mainstream news agencies, and the next thing you know, people are being shoved into mass graves by bulldozers. Nice work Miss Quinn! Not only is this guy a fool, but as a commander, he oversaw the most embarassing incidents in recent military history. The Army should take away his pension.

loulor:

Ah, yes, the old "killing for Jesus" syndrome.

When are the legions of people like Boykin going to get that those he's willing to kill are also ready to kill for their God?

It is absolutely insane (not to mention wrong-headed) to link killing to "God's will."

Why, from that defective premise, one can go on to infer that if killing is God's work, then those who make the killing weapons are helping us do God's work.

"This Just in: Boeing CEO just canonized by the Church of 'Kill a commie for Jeeeeezuz. Details at 11."

Get serious, people, and stop thinking lie eight-year-olds!!

If we have to kill, and it does appear necessary in places like Afghanistan, we should leave God/Jesus COMPLETELY out of it. Let's just admit that we're killing as a nation because we're right (or think we're right),and the other guy -- the one trying to kill us -- is wrong.

To link the process to Jesus or Allah is to make the same dastardly mistake made by the Taliban and al-Qaida.

Haven't we learned anything??????

Ex-G.I.:

The oath which we take upon induction begins, "I, [name], do solemnly swear, that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies..."

General Boykin became one of those enemies everytime he incorporated his own beliefs into the mission.

It frightens me to see so many Army and Air Force General officers who have been allowed to do this.

Gen. Boykin's comment attributing a physical limit (size) to God makes me wonder if he has ever even thought about the concept of God, beyond what some Bible-Thumper told him.

That he made it to the rank of Lieutenant General, makes me say, My God!

Paganplace:

Seems this guy doesn't know that people killing each other over whose religion is 'false' *is* part of that 'darkness.'
