Divine Impulses

Divine Impulses: Caroline Casey

Born the youngest of five children to an Irish Catholic congressman and his wife, Caroline Casey was an unlikely student of astrology.

But for the past thirty years, in her work as a Washington area astrologer, Casey has formed a spirituality of her own by melding social action, myth and astrology.

Casey has a degree in Symbol Systems from Brown University and broadcasts a weekly radio show on astrology and social action.

»Watch Caroline Casey talk with On Faith's Sally Quinn about astrology's role in religion, the mythology of this year's presidential campaign and how she brings metaphysics "even to the intelligent."

Frere Loup:

I've heard her before, she's good people but the whole notion of 7 "planets" and 12 "constellations" having direct spiritual, psychological, and physical impact is laughable. 2 of the 'planets' aren't and those "constellations" were Rohrshotz Blots 4 millennia ago and the Procession of the Equinoxes wiped out any tentative configuration long ago. No, as much as we'd like to pretend, this is not the 11th century c.e. spontaneous generation does not produce rats, although politics does, and there are 400 billion solar systems in our local neighborhood. If "planets" and "constellations" SHAPE human lives, fire up your supercomputer and get cracking. The Universe has no center and it is filled with 'planets', all of them influencing everybody and each other 24/7. That said, the "human attributes" that are assigned to "planets & constellations" are direct projections from our Id. It's about a symbol system that reflects stuff that's "in us" not in the stars. Traits, attributes, tendencies, take it as a first level human psychology. For many, that's not enuf. They want a flat earth fixed creation where somebody's deity "does things to them", they want superdaddylovemeboss, anything but personal responsibility for their lives. That's why America elected Nixon, Raygun, Bush, Clinton, & Bush - and here we are. Astrology and the auguring of chicken entrails won't get us out of this one. Only we can do that.

To quote songwriter John Prine: Your flag decal won't get you into Heaven anymore, its already overcrowded from your dirty little war, and Jesus don't like killing no matter what the reasons for, YOUR FLAG DECAL WON'T GET YOU INTO HEAVEN ANYMORE.

Every community should have an astrologer with the integrity and good humor of Caroline Casey.
Even skeptics benefit from her work in the world, even if they don't know her personally.

Brooks Cole:

Caroline Casey is without a doubt one of the most articulate, well educated and deeply wise thinkers and activits in recent history. She brings a fresh systemic perspective in a time where man-made systems everywhere are breaking down, insight that can be applied to the task of regaining sustainability of our environmental, financial, health, societal and governance systems by studying how nature itself creates wholeness and balance.

Astrology is not about Rams and lions and goats and witches; it is about whole systems perspective. Astrology is a profound, ancient and time-tested symbol system masterfully suited to examining complex problems -- the Interdependence of time, space, and meaning that our culture has nearly lost and desperately needs to regain.

Witchcraft is still witchcraft no matter what other names some might call it.
