Why Wright Versus Wrong Matters

What made the Philadelphia speech so moving is that it wasn't political in tone but moral and reflective. Obama's integrity is genuine on the face of it. As long as that remains true, people will have no trouble telling Wright and wrong.

Hello, nice site :)

karela:

Much thanks to Deepak Chopra for speaking out on this issue. I have felt the same about these things, but Dr. Chopra's voice impacts on more hearts and minds and it is greatly appreciated.

-C-:

Do you fully disagree with what Jeremiah Wright stated in those speeches? Was it not a sort of Karmic equation that was responsible for the WTC attack---if indeed the US gov. was not responsible in the 1st place? What effect does the NON-publicized US invasions, bombings, killing of innocents around the world have on the karma of the people who blindly support such actions and policies?? Karmic debt??

Deepak are you purple? Yin and yang represent balance, why so hard on yang and a noble war to keep Americans safe? You obviously have written on the shadow and probably familiar with McKays Madness of Crowds, why then is the Islamic threat recognized? In your writings, it seems, that Christain fundamentalists are more dangerous than those who blow up children or use childeren as bombs. For instance the bomb before the one that killed Bhutto was strapped on an infant. Whilst we pat on ourselves on the back for being spiritual the shadow stays on the move. If war is utterly evil why does Krishna urge Arjuna to rise and fight! Is their a war you would support?

And now Wright?

Does being spiritual make us close minded and naive? Why the knee jerk aversion to all forms of Nationalism?

What racism would that be? The fact the mainstreams finally got off their duffs and started to examine where Obama has been and what his said and done in the past? Hell it's about time. Those at ABC NBC CBS and CNN have been so busy rolling out the Red carpet for Obama that they've forgotten all about doing their real job.

Titus:

I'm not a fan of Barrack, but the racism in this society is exposed right in plain view by the punditocracy. I can only assume that their parents use to lynch black folks right up until 1968.

Of course summoning the wrath of the Abrahamic Saklas isn't good either. But lets not pretend that black people don't have a right to this anger. Heck, I'm hacked off at whitey and I'm not even black.

Jess:

Great post. I for one think idealism is winning. I think that people are starting to realize that idealism does not equate to irrationality or unrealistic dreams, but rather to the better nature of what is possible in the human experience.

garyd:

Nerakami in Africa proceeded the United States of American by something on the order of three millenia. It was done by Africa to Africans. It was briefly halted by European colonialism. The Europeans were only there for about 70 years and now it is beginning again please note the tragedies in Darfur and other places.

Even in the US today the chief killer of Young black males is other young black males. You can blame whitey for this until you're blue in the face but in the long run until you provide these young men with a belief in something better than payback the situation won't get any better. And sorry but what Obama is promising isn't any better.

nerakami:

A lot of Americans seem unable to understand much less forgive the Rev. Wright's anger and yet these same people want black people to "get over" the psychological horrors of centuries of abuse heaped upon them, which by the way is the very reason Rev. Wright is angry as he himself grew up in a time when discrimination and segregation was still law. America, we need to grow up. We all need to forgive each other and move on, if we are to ever go beyond the stains in our past...

Bajagirl:

Hey! Pioneer King! I have news for you: it's not bigoted to be offended by remarks like those made by Rev. Wright. I think MOST Americans, who love their country, are offended by these remarks, and we now understand exactly where Michelle Obama's attitude about her country come from.

Hate speech is hate speech, whichever side of our many divides it comes from. Try to imagine the reaction if Hillary Clinton had been a member of a church - for 20 YEARS - whose minister preached White supremacy, railed against the mongrelization of white culture by African elements, etc. She would be toast - and rightly so.

Rev. Wright is not the crazy uncle in the closet, or even BO's grandmother. We don't get to CHOOSE our relatives. We do, for darn sure, choose our church, pastor, associates. Twenty years and he had no idea? What does that say about his acuity and judgment?

My guess is it was politically expedient for him to belong to that church and turn a blind eye for his advancement in Chicago politics. Now he's on a national stage, and those old connections are a problem. It's not bigotry to point this out. It's common sense.

Arminius:

Time to move on:

And what rank do you hold in the KKK?

Your despicable racism does not belong here, or anywhere.

Arminius

Time to move on:

"But one major theme of the speech was that moving beyond the racial divide can't be accomplished in a single election." is so no doubt but it can get us well down the pike.

The problem is the minister's cry-baby whining that opens wide the door to many racially charged and politically devastating racial expressions that can't be stopped. I can't give an example without it being censored but we know there is no censorship at the watering hole where it will be said and stick with, "who wants one of them to be president" that need not be said.

Looks like the preacher is on Clinton/McCain's side.

When a black person is elected president then we can turn to our black whiners and say, "there's something wrong with you alright but it's not the color of your skin. There's millions of white folks that will never be president so shut up about your race already."

The big turn-off of the obviously not poor or deprived minister is his use of race as though there were no poor deprived people of other races. It's the perception that being white is some kind of free pass -bound to be resented by the millions of struggling whites. Let all former slaves be granted a billion dollars each from the national treasury. And the black people who have never been slaves shut up about it all. What's wrong with them is not their race as much as the tension they create using it as a battering ram.

When a bomb is battered it can and in this case seems to have gone off. Hard to set off a bomb while staying far enough away to avoid the blast using close in instrument, the battering ram.

Isn't it time black folks held a "white slave owner appreciation day" to thank them for being here where they can and are running for the highest office in the land. How did a black person get into Harvard anyhow? Without slavery they would still be in Africa where theres rampant aids and starvation just to mention a couple of many good reasons to be thankful one is here.

Just wonderful. Obama dishes out the usual pablum and the babes in the political woods and a few adults who should frankly know better lap it up like it's the nectar of the God's.

The whole blasted speech distilled down to its most basic -some would say basest - elements Is we can get by the racial divide if we just get on board with socialized medicine and a few billion more in other social programs.

Arminius:

Terra,

Thanks, dear Lady. Obama is the Man.

Please see Starhawks's thread. I have a problem I wish you to view.

Terra Gazelle:

Arminius,
Thank you dear...

I was over at Barack's web page and what they do is not answer the trolls and haters. They post a joke or a recipe. Lovely one of chocolate chip cookies on there. lol

The haters will hate. There is no way to change them, change is hard for some, they feel comfortable with what they know. What have they known for the last 7 years? Lies and more lies...they are out of practice with the truth...that is a muscle that has not been used in DC lately.

I made a contribution to Obama after his speach...a small one and my fifth, it is more then I have ever donated to any other politician. Let the trolls sob and grind their teeth...Obama is making millions. : )

Oh and last poll...Obama 52, Clinton 45.

His speach of unity and his life of living it, follows my faith and my logic. What was it Lincoln said..a house divided can not stand.

For those who are focused on the grain of sand will miss the wonderful landscape opening up before us. Obama gave a speech but there are some of us who "have ears and heard beyond the words, and eyes that looked into his soul and saw our own.

I truly feel a sense of lost for those who did not feel the stirring within these moments because, this goes far beyond politics and transcends our different races or faiths.... what happened today, speaks directly to conscious beings who are able to recognize the rare opportunity to turn a page in our human evolution.

It is from our minds that reality is created and if enough who have heard are joined together.... no man can put asunder.

Pioneer King:

The speech was not enough. Regrettably, there is nothing that Sen. Obama can do or say to change the minds of bigots.
Sen. Obama's idelisim was never enough and the events of the past weeks are affirmation that the racial divide is insurmountable.

Malcolm:

The people who are castigating Wright would have had a field day with Moses, Jesus, Paul, and Mohammed. None of them were tolerant. They were all bigots. Yet those same people sing their praises every day like they were pure saints.

So go ahead and find any excuse not to vote for Obama. Chances are you didn't support him in the past anyway. We'll see how well your choice of Hillary or McCain worked out for you in four years.

Ex-Deepak:

dear deepak,
scientists said that you are a mere quack, but i disagreed. now you disappoint me (are you just trying to be in the good books of your benefactor- oprah?):

be honest. show some intellectual integrity. own up. don't belittle your readers. and certainly don't lessen your own credibility for a weak defense.

obama's loyalties are now suspect. why? not for wright's WORDS but for his own ACTIONS to patronize those words. a mere speech can best be seen as reactionary and convenient. and it was shameful/telling of him to drag clinton and ferraro into his speech.

if he didn't agree, he should have grown a spine, stood up and left. then talked about his objections and written about them. but he shouldn't come back now whining when his is caught. afterall, this is not just a question of not agreeing with some details, this is about a MUCH MORE fundamental objection.

in search of his black identity, obama tiltled too far against his white self. while doing so, he manipulated the powerful chicago church to counter the "ain't black enough" allegations and win the state legislature. now he finds his old friends dispensable. pity. and telling.

just how can ANYONE think of this nut-job as a person of God, let alone invite him to your wedding and have him bless your kids?! so much for judgement when his own judgement about his friends is so despicable! and coming right after the spitzer episode, this just underlines just why voters should NEVER believe politicans who sound too good to be true! or spiritual leaders who fail to parse the moral issues correctly!

Concerned The Christian Now Liberated:

I wonder if the Rev. Wright ever preached to his his flock about the value of education and the dangers of drugs, sex and guns? Maybe a lot more time on these subjects vs. blaming others would help the dear reverend reach the fulness of Christianity. And if does not like the current bible, he should write his own version. Thomas Jefferson did. So did Martin Luther. So did many Christian members of the On Faith panel of religion specialists.

And expanding his own education in the field of genealogy and the historic Jesus would aid his sermons and attitude.

Kris Rafferty:

How can one man carry all the accolades you and the media have heaped on him. He has to be FDR, JFK, MLK all wrapped up together. What about his flaws? Are we allowed to not like his saying one thing, and then finding out he really didn't mean it? Are we allowed to be offended when he lies and he's found out? Or does that not matter because he gives a good speech?

I am a well educated white man and,I am even more impressed with Obama after his speech. This man will end special interest lower our gas prices, and have government work for us.Sean Hannity and others are rich people&favor the status quota and they think white america is so stupid to not vote for a man that can really help this country because what his Rev said come on America wake up people like Hannity&Rush are the real frauds!!!!!!!!Bush can't even put two sentences together without sounding like a fool!!!

Amy:

What Obama has confirmed with his Candidacy is all politicians be they White, Black, Democrat or Republican will say or do anything for money to get votes or for votes. The only honest Politician in the race was R. Paul. The rest puts, self number one, Party second, and lobbyist third. The best interest of this Nation or American citizens is not on their priority list. We only exist at election time to be lied to, spun, or whatever it takes to get out votes! In the final analysis Obama is just another lying Bottom feeding Politician!

Anonymous:

Birds of a feather flock together & Obama has flocked to that hate filler Preacher for 20 years & now try to make us believe he is not the same bird as his spiritual advise. Too little, too late and 20 years overdue Obama!

Joe:

There can be no Doubt that Obama and his wife are both Racist & American haters. After watching videos of their preacher I have lost all respect for Obama and anyone the attended that Church or still supports Obama. If any white had belonged or attended even one sermon of a church that spews that kind of hate they would be vilified by everyone, and rightly so. Michell was being honest when she said for the first time in her life she was proud of American. Because for all of her life she has hated American and most of its White Citizens! Obama belonged to that church for 20 years yet he does not share those views? That is beyond belief! How can he expect any one intelligence enough to vote, even a left wing loony to be that stupid? We have to get away from this double standard where it is ok for blacks to do things way over the line esp. ones that would be be President! It is very scary to think that someone that supported that preacher and went to that hate filled church for 20 years may be President! After watching those videos I can very easy see where Obama may well be a Muslin with a secret agenda for this Nation when elected! One thing for sure it is hard to see how anyone that listen to the venom spewed out from that so called preacher for 20 years can be a Christen! If Obama gets elected after this he will have did a better con job on the American public than any President in History even better than the Moron in the WH now.

Obama gave a great speech and one of the best speech I ever heard on racial issues. His speech was inspirational, described in details the modern racial issues from an historical perspective, and was aiming at uniting all americans. I would like to hear this type of speech (inspirational, historical, and unifier) more often. I think that Obama would be a great president.

This speech did not do it for me. It seemed like it was more excuses for blacks feeding their anti-American, anti-white, anti-semantic out-dated hatreds.

This behavior is not allowed, excused or tolerated with any other group of people. Enough is enough.

gary:

Blacks need to start taking some personal responsibility for high rate of high school drop out, sexual promiscuity, children born out of wedlock, , absence of male parenting/role models, drugs, crime, incarceration, AIDS, and lack of personal responsibility instead of playing the victim hood game and blaming everyone else for their plight! Until that time there will always be hate mongers & race baiter,s to use them and profit from their plight like the Rev. Wright, Rev. Jessie Jackson and Rev. Al Sharpton as well as 10,s of thousands of White and Black Politicians. In fact the whole Democrat party! Hands outs, instead of a hand up, is the means of keeping Blacks down and economic Slaves! Keeping Blacks as an race of victims instead of a race of achievers is in the best interest of Black preachers and Democrat politicians! Blacks will never be lead to the promise land by hate mongering Preachers like Rev. Wright or by bottom feeding Politician that wants and works to keep Blacks in the Ghetto on Welfare, and voting Democrat!

Terra Gazelle:

I take it you who are doubting how Barack feels would not have voted for him anyway. His biggest crime...his race.

Are you also the ones that swallowed Bush's screed? If you believed that Saddam had WMD then you have a problem with judgement. If you can not tell a lie from the truth, if you can not feel in your heart the difference between lies and truth, you have the problem.

If you want to continue the hate and division, then Obama is correct...we will slowly slide into oblivion. Each man or woman can be seen as imperfect, none of us lives our lives without mistakes. But tell me,in this video world, in this world were each person wants their 15 min. of fame....why has not one person not sold a story or come forward with any hate filled or anti american remarks from Obama? Why is it someone elses words that you attack. Is Rev Wright campaigning for President?

Wouldn't it be refreshing to have someone tell you the truth? He could have said I will have nothing more to do with Rev Wright. It would have been politically better...and the easiet thing to do. But he didn't. He was honest, knowing that he may have lost the Presidentcy because of it. I guess truth is now so rare that we do not know what to do with it.

You Catholics...do you live exactly what the Church and the pope tells you? Do you adher to each quote of your Priest and does he abide each word of his Cardinal? I doubt if any of us agrees with each word of our religious leaders. Do we leave our church? Heck as a student of Wicca I did not agree with my teacher, who was my religious guide. I am now a Wiccan clergy and leader myself...and I know have said things my members and students have not agreed with. But they find that I have much to offer besides what they do not agree with. They stay with me.

As far as NAFTA...The Canadians apologized to Obama and the Canadian parliment is screaming for the fireing of alot of people...including the Prime Minister. See, it started out being Hillary Clinton, but as the Canadian Gov. is Conservative and the PM being hand in glove with the Repub. party...and with even Limbaugh sending repubs to vote for Hillary...Obama was drawn into a lie.

http://www.cbc.ca/news/reportsfromabroad/macdonald/20080310.html

As far as getting out of Iraq...Samantha Powers said...that Obama has always said he would get out as fast as possible...but, he would leave with more care then we enterd. He could not make a plan in 2008 for something in 2009. How many soldiers are still going to be there? Will the surge be working? will sadir be back in the fight? He said...he could get the people that are on the ground, the Generals and experts and get their expert opinions and make a decision on what was happening then, not a year ago.

Now if you want someone like Bush who makes a decision and never changes it... you will have what we have. Chaos and death.

So keep on with not thinking..don't you know if you don't use it you lose it, and a brain is a terrible thing to waste.

You do not have to vote for him, but make your decisions out of truth not lies. Be informed and make a decision yourself..not from the lies of Limbaugh...yes I heard his talking points.

His very close 20 year relationship with a "Pastor" that spews hate is embarrassing to say the least. If this was any of the other candidates, they would no longer be in the race.

Here he is praising him:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qpzHQ_PC1uI

His current description of his relationship with his Pastor is just the latest example of Obama changing his story to suit his audience. The public is not buying it.

He has changed stories on other issues: NAFTA, public financing, relationship with REZCO, using other speeches, money from special interests, etc. Then when someone dares to criticize his inconsistencies, they are charged with racism. It reminds me a little of the GWB administration calling people unpatriotic for criticizing them. His campaign has been playing with the race issue from the beginning:

http://www.tnr.com/politics/story.html?id=aa0cd21b-0ff2-4329-88a1-69c6c268b304

Deception has become the pattern.
Enough is enough. There is no credibility left.

Appleby:

There is an old saying that if you lie down with dogs, you arise with fleas.

Obama apparently thought it was possible to spend twenty years immersing himself in anti-white rhetoric and blasphemy, disgusting commentary about the country he now purports to want to lead, and even sexual innuendo ("Bill Clinton was doing to the Black people what he was doing to Monica Lewinsky...") from the Pulpit given to Rev. Wright by the grace of God, and arise without taint or blemish.

Now he would have us believe that in twenty years in the pew, he was immersed in his Tunes, text-messaging his friends, or passed out cold after Saturday night, and not only was he not stirred to wakefulness by the thunder from the pulpit, but he was not even awakened by the foot-stomping, hand-clapping and Hallelujahs coming from the wealthy young Black men and women seated all around him as this filth spewed forth.

A man that oblivious ought not to even be allowed to walk in the street, much less lead America, lest he be that oblivious to the siren of an approaching fire truck behind him or the headlight of an oncoming train.

Hopeful:

Dear Barack, Please continue to be honest and open with us. It is a joy to hear you speak and offer us hope. Stay true to your beliefs. Some believe in you and hope that your words can be implemented. Others distort your statements and hope for your failure. If you are eliminated from the political scene by naysayers, that will be our loss. Please know that you have planted the seeds for hope and unity. Whether you will be allowed to see those seeds grow to fruition, may be out of your control. Be the best that you can be and please never give up hope. Someday, if not tomorrow, your words of unity and hope will become reality. Eventually, we will all honor your words and your sacrifices. I want you to be the one to lead us to unity and hope. If others will not allow that to be, I thank you for planting the seeds.
