Does the power of Jesus’ message of ethics and love change one iota if it is determined that these are his bones?
For Jews, Jesus was a Jew who was killed on the cross by the Romans. Nothing changes if his bones are found. Does the power of his message of ethics and love change one iota if it is determined that these are his bones?
Jesus was a great teacher but nowhere in the Jewish tradition can you find the belief that Jesus was divine or the Messiah. To us, the Hebrew Scripture’s promise is clear: the Messiah’s coming will be marked by the age of peace and justice – an age that did arrive with Jesus. There is no reference to a second coming nor the divinity of the Messiah.
So for me, the resolution of the origin of the bones will have no bearing on how I perceive Jesus or Christianity.
