Perplexed, separating religion and state is as much about protecting religions from the meddling of the state as it is about any one religion exploiting and abusing political powers in the name of the said religion. Separation of state and religion is not about abolishing religions and the influence of religion in people's lives. It is about an individual's right to practice any religion or none.

An anti-theist who demands everybody should be prohibited from practicing any religion is violating basic human rights. That is not what separation of state and religion is about.

Since much of religion consists of metaphysical fabrications that people either choose to believe in or not, why then should particular religious beliefs be allowed to influence public policy in any way??

The Founders were practical to the point of understanding how influential religious belief was and still is, in terms of governing the behavior of believers - but on the other hand, not so much on the part of non-believers.

In an almost preternatural inspiration of fairness, they decided that religion should be reserved for the religious - and that the machinery of government should be free of the special interests of religion in so far as possible....otherwise, government might thereby be compromised and may not be able to fairly serve the interests of the many.

Even then, the great diversity of beliefs regarding the sacred and the profane were widely recognized - and yet, it was recognized that all must ideally be governed equally and fairly under the law.

Separation of church and state is indeed such an implied protection. Religions are many, and none can be proven to be superior to any other in terms of the validity of their underlying principles or belief structure.

Religion is for the most part based on mythology - the literal truth of religion just isn't.....except through contrived misunderstandings and creatively inspired dogma that suited the purposes of the early founders of said religions. Much of religion seems to be based on administrative decisions tendered by clerical hierarchies, as much as anything - Papal authority represents this tradition like no other.

Politics today now reeks of religion in a truly unholy alliance designed for inordinate control of government by the few - as if we didn't already suffer enough from the collusion of corporate interests and their lobbyist attack/lap dogs. Has Congress become completely powerless in the face of these forces, or simply corrupted by their own self-interest?

On the other hand, our Supreme Court is dominated by Catholics that very much follow Vatican protocal in terms of their ultra-conservative persuasions and thinking - is this right?? Probably not - and probably a dominance and coherence in thinking that should never have happened at all. Nevertheless, our government allowed it to happen.

In the age of Bush, there are really too many Constitutional transgressions sponsored by the executive branch to count - facilitated by and starting with Bush as president thanks to the Supreme Court ruling that ultimately put him there.

At present, the judicial & legislative autonomy of the state (e.g. government for and by the many) is threatened by the over-mastering religious beliefs of the few, not to mention the powerful contiguous corporate and financial interests that have put our very economy and social well being in such jeopardy as we witness today.

In addition, there is little doubt that the war in Iraq has played a major role in compromising our economy to a maximum degree. As for human suffering, apart from the dead and otherwise war- wounded, and just among US troops alone, it is estimated that over 300,000 have suffered some degree of closed head injury due to the chronic proximity and exposure to IEDs (explosive devices) in this particular war. How this will play out medically and socially in the years to come is incalculable.

Separation of church and state was an excellent idea - will we live to see it again??

and number 2, Speed123 is the one who is wrong to state that the Separation of Church and State is a false interpretation of the Constitution. There is nothing, absolutely nothing, that the government does now to Speed123, nor to anyone else, that prevents them all the freedom in the world, ALL THE FREEDOM IN THE WORLD to practice their religion any way that they like. Being a cloak and dagger, conspiracy, "stone wall it" type yourself Mr Colson maybe you'll appreciate this tidbit a little more than others.

When Napoleon era French brought back certain Egyptian documents to Europe the Vatican recognized them as containing the fundamentals of the Bible and took action. Vandals were dispatched to Egypt to destroy evidence. And, an initiative was launched to down grade the importance of the Bible. Catholics were taught that church law superseded what the Bible says and the pope would have final say etc. I'll bet you get it.

Did you know the documentation to verify what I have said is in the archives at the Vatican right now? Small wonder his holiness is in favor of public religion even though the discard of the Bible as it's base seems to have failed due to fundamentalist Christians.

The government cannot support or suppress one religion over the next; however, this does not mean that religions are excluded from public dialogue or policy.

Not entirely surprising, since the irrational concern over any mention whatsoever of God in politics is a relatively recent phenomenon.

Of course, many on the opposite side of the debacle go way to far in claiming that the U.S. is a "Christian nation". Hopefully, the majority of Americans will meet up in the middle...

Some people, like me, use no last name on this web site. Others will use some made up name to post their thoughts. For me, it is because while I post here for the world to see, I also prefer to preserve my privacy. Does that mean I think religion is a private matter? Well, yes and no. I think all of us here who post without our full names to some extent think that our religion is a private personal matter. But then because we post here we also believe our beliefs need to be shared with others. So this issue is not an easy issue and there are many shades of gray.

My friends know my beliefs and I am happy to tell others if religious topics come up in the course of a conversation. But I am not the one on the street corner asking people if they know Jesus. I tried that once and it was awkward for me. It is like some people are good at sales and marketing while some of us are in the back room doing the accounting. To that extent my religion is a private matter and I don't push it on others and I do not like it when they push it on me. Some guy approached me in my bank the other day and asked me if I knew Jesus. I was polite and told him yes I did but in my mind I was thinking how inappropriate this was and it turned me off.

I don't like to see people wearing big gold crosses anymore than I like to see a Burka or head covering. I would just as soon these people not push their beliefs with these displays. Dress codes are really bad and Turkey what right to pass laws against the Islamic dress code so as to maintain their secular society. The real purpose of the head covering is political but disguised as some kind of display of modesty and religion. This is when your religion needs to be a private matter.

So my religion is not private but it is not arrogant either. I will push my religion here on this web site because this is an appropriate forum of interested people and here you are not blindsided by my voice. However, don't look for me in your local bank doing any more than cashing a check or conducting other related banking business. In that bank my religion is a private matter and so is yours.

The following remarks were delivered at the opening of a debate which will be aired on PBS over the next few weeks (Yes, check local listings).

The event took place in Richmond Virginia at the splendid Jefferson Hotel and was sponsored by the Miller Center for Public Affairs and MacNeil/Lehrer Productions.

There were four participants debating the proposition that “religion should have no place in politics and government.” I was, as you might surmise, on the “pro” side and my teammate was the Reverend Barry Lynn. On the “con” side were “On Faith” panelist Chuck Colson and Bishop Henry Jackson. It was a wild ride, but a civil one.

There is No Religious Freedom Without Freedom from Religion

Tonight we are debating the proposition that “religion should have no place in politics and government.” Let me state from the outset that I--a garden-variety Jewish atheist—wholly concur.

It has come to my attention, however, that many of my compatriots do not. Reverend Barry Lynn’s organization recently reported that 65 % of Americans believed that "the Founders intended the United States to be a Christian nation.” A 2006 study by the Pew Forum noted that nearly 7 out of 10 citizens say that “liberals have gone too far in keeping religion out of schools and government.”

In short, many Americans of good conscience have rejected the core principles of secularism. For them, considerations of faith must inform our leaders’ political deliberations. That, they argue, it what the Founding Fathers wanted. Our inability to respect their wishes, it is alleged, has transformed our country into something of a secular Apartheid State. Ours has become a nation where the whims of a small elite have supplanted the will of the majority.

Now let me be frank: The most pressing challenge facing American secularism today consists of refuting these beliefs. But the challenge cannot not only be waged in the higher courts--up until recently the “home field” of our secular worldview.

Instead we must prevail in the arena of public opinion. For, American secularism is facing a “legitimation crisis.” As the statistics cited above indicate, we have yet to convince our fellow citizens of truths we hold self-evident. Therefore it is our task not merely to litigate, but to persuade.

So in the name of persuasion here are three reasons to adopt tonight’s proposition. First, mixing religion and politics will grant an unfair advantage to one religion. Why is that? In a country where 80% of the population self-identifies as Christian, those who infuse faith into the government risk creating some sort of Christian Establishment.

But Christianity is many things. It is Southern Baptism and Catholicism, Mormonism and Methodism, Presbyterianism and Pentecostalism. Given how diverse American Christendom actually is, such an Establishment will not only alienate religious minorities, but most Christians as well!

This brings me to a second point: keeping the public square free of religious considerations has been a boon for people of faith. It keeps Christians, among others, off one another’s backs. Moreover, it provides believers of all stripes with the ability to worship the divine in peace and security.

Finally, the idea of segregating faith and politics is not antithetical to Christian thought, but lies at the very heart of its intellectual tradition. We find traces of it in Bible. We glean hints of it in the writings of Augustine (and isn’t it interesting that Pope Benedict recently commented that he found “true secularism” in Augustine’s City of God. If the Holy Father can find something redeeming in Secularism than it must be kosher, so to speak). We see this idea engaged in the political philosophy of Martin Luther and John Locke, to name but a few. The endeavor to keep the public sphere naked—pornographically naked if you like those sorts of metaphors-- is an idea with a Christian genealogy.

To conclude, I will proclaim that “there is no religious freedom without freedom from religion.” The two go hand in hand. It is this idea which I wish to convince you of tonight.
