Morality Cannot Be Divided

Christians do not believe that we can separate public and private morality. A man who will cheat on his wife will cheat on the taxpayers.

REPLY TO Patrick@OnlyJesusSaves.com:

Your comment is an early April Fools joke, right? Nobody could write such a parody of religious tomfoolery with a straight face. Somebody does something wrong. Then he judges himself. Then Jesus forgives him. All's right with the world.

This does, of course, offer a solution to abortion. Woman gets abortion. Judges herself. Jesus forgives her. All's right with the world. Woman gets another abortion...

Everybody's satisfied. No more bitter divide among Americans.

Not so regarding the attempt to restrain your freedom of speech, only your style of presentation to me of it.

Sincerely, my intention after reading your first post, was to make light of what I thought was you being in a "bad mood" or having a "bad morning," as we all do sometimes.

It escalated downhill after that. As I already stated I did not intend to offend you and still feel that way.

As far as Chuck Colson's past involvement I can not comment. I only know him as a Christian based teacher. You know more about his past then I do.

"MODERN-MORALiTY is Superior to Biblical-Morality."

"MODERN-MORALITY" has it that everything is relative and nothing can be judged to be good or bad. Perhaps "I don't know and I don't care, so why bother?" is superior to an attempt to find truth by reason, and thereby secure the long term good?

i enjoy reading your columns... i am far from a perfect person and paul is my favorite bible charictar so i like the idea of redemption and forgiveness... and continuing to contribute to life after falling ungracefully from grace. so to speak. I have always heard it said and i somtimes have to remind myself or be reminded by the truth in the statements that faith and righteousnes should be worn like a loose garmet or it soon becomes a straitjacket and make a person who geuinely desire to do good to be helpless, no matter how righteous the effort might be and that is is always good to remember that if you move a holo down 6 inches it becomes a noose... i have found these and forgivenes s and tolereance when i am able to be the best medicine for keeping me doing the things that i can actually accomplish. and some days i do a much better job than other days.. but i dont think that means i should give up... everone does somthing unexplainable from time to time or bites off more than they can cheww from time to time, when i do this i try at the earliest opprotunity to admit reality and i simply have to chew or I spit it out until i have grown a little and might can more realistically take a bite. i dont think the answer is to throw away an actual lifes good works and say it no longer matters or was incorrect only that the person who accomplished some great things has found out he like i am and we all are all to human at times. when one chapter ends there can be another started with the wisdom gained from the previous. mistakes. if a person keeps the good stuff and becomes willing to correct the mistakes then they have the operotunity to do great things or at least to do the things God would have them do. but please check 4 truth i'm just a very imperfect dyslexic artist.

ChurchStateWall:

As often as I disagree with Colson, and resent the seemingly unavoidable slam at "tolerance," he's basically right this time.

But then again, he's been surprising me lately, speaking out as almost a lone voice in the Religious Right to call Christians to look in their own mirrors first.

I dislike a lot of the backward thinking, but Colson isn't quite a Pharisee, either...

BGone:

The first lady, Miz Bush should be real happy to hear, "Christians do not believe that we can separate public and private morality. A man who will cheat on his wife will cheat on the taxpayers."

If that's so then, a man who will cheat on the taxpayers will cheat on his wife. Ever hear of "tax breaks for the wealthy"? That's cheating twice. First the ones that avoid paying and then those that must pay, just like religion and the tax law enforced tithe. You getting any other tax dollars besides the tithe for your efforts selling tickets to hell to those already in a hell they made for themselves? You do accept tax deductible donations?

Give your brain a chance! http://www.hoax-buster.org/sellyoursoul But then your pocketbook will suffer so maybe not.

It "pays" to be ignorant, to be dumb to be dopey to be ignorant just like you. Go for the big money. Lucifer pays well with the money collected from the victims. You deserve every penny after all you've been through.

Brambleton:

Luke,

If you could, please expand on your comments. What justification and immorality are you speaking of?

Thank you.

Gordon Walker:

I agree with Chuck Colson 100%. If Mr Spitzer was a run of the mill governor and not Mr honesty and integrity who cares about a little dalliance.

Looking for answers:

Can we agree on one thing please?

All are not free of wrong doing and committing sin, Christians, on-Christians alike.

What we can do is try and accept people where they are and help each other through difficult times by being kind and understanding.

Hard thing to do sometimes, but nevertheless necessary to bring about harmony in relationships.

The first step to resolving conflict is to admit that one exists. I cannot help anyone resolve a problem, whether it is to support and love them through a difficult time if I do not know that the problem exist; which means they need to tell me.

integrity:

I don't see integrity as wholeness. I see integrity as one who will make mistakes and does not hesitate to admit it. Mr. Colson, we are all on a journey.

GeorgiaSon:

No question. And if cheating indicates a moral fault that might have consequences for public sevice, what about outright divorce? Especially, the type of divorce in which a successful, powerful male simply wakes up one day and decides to trade in the old wife for a newer, younger, and prettier model? Not just a few flings, mind you, but a ruthless turning of one's back on any semblance of respect for family values? What does that tell you about a man's true moral worth and his fitness for public service?

It seems to me that Mr. Colson has spelled the death knell to the politial futures of:
Rudy Giuliani (two major sins)
Newt Gingrich (two major sins)
John McCain (one major sin, so far)

Jesus says explicitly that all the above, and their wives, are adulterers. Shouldn't we treat them accordingly--especially now that so many people, like Mr.Colson, are on record about how we should treat the sins of Eliot Spitzer?

TRUTH:

>>Christians don't have to isolate public and private morality - they just use their religion as a justification for their immorality.

Same is true with those who dont believe in God..they dont have to isolate public and private morality, they just use their 'freethinking' as a justification for their immorality.

So whats the point? A baseless statement on Christianity is all one can derive from that.

Any Christian, or any religous person for that matter, who uses their religion as a justification for their immorality are not Christians at all.

So, lets put the blame where it belongs...on man, mans views, mans 'enlightenment'...which are all batting below zero with regard to morality and fiscal responsibility..to name a few things in the news recently.

Ash:

Chuck,

What about people who betray their nation? Might they possibly betray the religion they suddenly espoused when trying to reduce their jail time?

Robert B.:

Patrick,

I'm more than willing to admit my faults. I don't need an (probably rigged) Internet test to tell me how far I fall short of sanctity. Christianity teaches that all men and women, even the esteemed Rev. Colson, are sinners. This is why we need divine grace to be saved.

Colson has advocated using torture against people and yet dares to lecture everyone on the evil of Gov. Spitzer's actions. In doing so, he maintains a double-standard that borders upon hypocrisy. You remember Christ's attitude towards hypocrites, right, Patrick?

Also, where in the good Reverend's post is the compassion that Christ had towards the adulterous woman? Where is "hating the sin, but loving the sinner"? Shouldn't Gov. Spitzer's actions remind us all of our own human frailty? Can't we judge his actions as wrong and yet hope that he will "go forth and sin no more"? Of course not. He is, after all, a Democrat and therefore deserving of as much hellfire and brimstone as possible. Would Rev. Colson have shown such a lack of compassion for a Republican governor in the same situation. The tenor of his previous posts (especially the pro-torture one) leads me to say know. As Paul (I think) said, "By their fruits you shall know them."

Gov. Spitzer did commit a crime and I feel that he did right to resign his office. But Colson is not as lily-white as he chooses to seem. Neither are you, Patrick.

Athena:

I suppose that goes for David Vitter and Larry Craig as well.

Patrick@OnlyJesusSaves.com:

And do you Robert judge yourself as Jesus said you should do with the standard Mr. Colson has indeed judged himself with?
Do you consider yourself to be a good person Robert?
Have you Lied? Stolen? Lusted?
If you have you are as guilty as Spitzer. And if you judge yourself honestly, as Mr. Colson has you will know you are guilty, guilty and guilty. See the fruit of repentance and a new birth in Mr. Colson's life? See the change? Mr. Colson has already judged himself guilty and thrown himself at the mercy of Jesus. Have you?
If you think you don't need to then you are not being honest; you are the one who is judging unrighteously; you have the BEAM in your own eye.
Take the Good Person test, as Chuck has done, and BE HONEST about who you are.
Only when you judge your self righteously will you be able to, as Jesus says to do, judge righteously, as Chuck Colson can and does so wisely.

I welcome emailed replies and communication concerning this matter...

Robert B.:

So, the man who equated torturing people to trespassing is now going to lecture us on why public and private morality are one and the same.

There's a line of Scripture that I'm reminded of. Something about a mote and a beam being in people's eyes...

Luke:

Christians don't have to isolate public and private morality - they just use their religion as a justification for their immorality.

Garyd:

Well and truly stated sir.
