If Governor Huckabee meant this the way it sounds, I would not agree with him. But I don’t think he did, because he understands, as I do, that when you study the founding of our nation -- as Professor Daniel Dreisbach of American University has for example -- you will see that the founders were insistent that this free society reflected the fundamental truths of “nature and nature’s God,” as Jefferson put it.
God’s standards were quite explicit as well as implicit in all of the founding documents.
What is needed today is not to amend the Constitution but to interpret it according to its original intent. Doing so would eliminate 90 percent of the so-called church-state issues which so bitterly divide us.
America was founded as a unique experiment, bringing together the best of Enlightenment teaching with the best teaching of faith. It was founded, as Michael Novak wrote in his book On Two Wings on both faith and reason. They are never incompatible because human reason and faith are both gifts of God. If we understand that, we can put most of today’s issues in very clear perspective.
