I just watched Ari Fleischer on Hardball, he's working for something called Freedom's Watch. The host played a new ad that shows a legless soldier walk out of his house on prosthetic legs with a voice over saying we need to stay in Iraq and finish the job or they'll come and get us here. The ad ended with a shot of one of the planes smashing into the WTC. The interviewer (Mike Barnacle, I think) wanted to know the name of that soldier, but Ari Fleischer had no idea what the soldier's name was. I phoned Freedom's Watch to find out more. There was an Orwellian recorded message announcing that we must finish the war on terror in Iraq or etc etc etc Finally, a woman came on and asked me in a bored voice if I think failure in Iraq threatened my freedom (she was reading from a script) I asked her who was financing Freedom's Watch, but she wasn't at liberty to say. All in all it was a creepy and sinister experience.
There's something equally creepy and sinister about men like Charles Colson. They lie and manipulate and burn with righteous conviction, but they are lethally dangerous.

Although I not be an american, I have folowed the Iraq war II since the begining. I agree with you in almost all points. I just want to remember that when World Trade Center Towers came down 3,000 people died while many people from Middle East were screaming with joy by the streets of their nations. Of course their oficials laughed a lot far from any camera.
President Bush did exactly what the major part of american wanted: threw down two governments: Afganistan and Iraq of Sadan. It was a response. And when America did so, of course there can be consequences, pehaps not expected, include. I don't know if there be a fair war.
In recent times, the voice of american people began to change; now, people want US withdraw their forces from Iraq to leave that people to kill thenseves, till a new Saddan begin all that again.
I bet if president Bush had not done nothing, by this time Sadan would be awarding Osama and His Father-in-Law from Afganistan for their "great" act against US targets. Then, I would like to see the faces of these pseudo intelectuals and artists - that now are very angry - acuseing Bush as a coward!
All war is stupid. But to fight back in some cases, is not. I know it is realy hard to see a dead son comeing from Iraq. But one attack of a big proportion such as World Trade Center Towers was, might have a response at the same level.
US soldiers should remain in Iraq till everything be under control, to avoid a new Saddan Hussein over there.

I must caveat my first paragraph. If the intent of the war is to remove the existing government and replace it with another one more favorable towards the invading force/international community/local population, then we do have a moral obligation to stay and see it through, especially if we went in for dubious reasons.
If the intent of the war is a retributive strike in response to some grevious injustice that was supported by the citizens of said nation as a whole, then we are not obliged to do anything more than blast the nation to smithereens and then leave.
But one of the great things about the United States is that we do not do that. Even when a mjority of the Germans supported the Nazi's, we helped rebuild their country after its' capture. And thus, we are obligated not only by morality, but by presidence, to do the very same for Iraq. Failure to rebuild Germany would have signaled weakness to the Soviets, and the French would probably now be speaking Russian. Failure to restore Iraq to a functioning, viable State will lead to it being torn apart and ensure that war will continue in that region for decades to come, which will lead to future US military involvement. Does anyone see the cycle here?
You just have to ignore those fools. Most of them have no idea what is really happening in Iraq, nor do any of us really. Most of us get our news from organizations slanted one way or the other. The point of Mr. Colson is that once one enters into a conflict, be it rightly or wrongly, it is morally wrong to walk away and wash their hands of the mess created, a point with which I agree.
I was travelling in the Czech Republic a few years ago and met some locals that expressed how torn they were over their feelings about Americans. The striking thing to me was that they loved us because we try so hard to do the right thing in the world, but they were still unable to comprehend how we could just let the Soviets have their country after WW2. This is not something I have ever heard from the Vietnamese, but then again, I have never been there, nor heard anyone from there complain about anything.
It's going to be a long painful road for the Iraqi's and us, but we need to assist the best we can, be it from the streets or from remote bases, whatever the final deal that is struck between Republicans and Democrats may be.
On a side note in response to a very early poster, here is a history lesson: The United States entered into the Vietnam conflict because it was a memeber of SEATO - the South East Asia Treaty Organization, and assistance was requested by the South Vietnamese Gov't. Just like we are obligated by treaty to come to the aid of a member of the NATO alliance when attacked, we were also obligated to come to the aid of any SEATO member State. So, in short, we sent military advisors to train their military in fighting against the Guerrilla insurgency that was known as the Viet Cong. The conflict escalated when it was discovered that the NVA (North Vietnamese Army) had entered the fight. While we actually were doing a pretty good job of winning the war, it was our liberal politicians and their "grass roots" supporters that blocked the war fighters from carrying it to North Vietnam in force (which would have, more than likely, put a decisive victory in our hands). Unfortunately, for some reason, the liberal politicians (not necessarliy just the Democrats, by the way), seem to be unable to see what is known as long-term strategy. Since war movies are over in 2 hours, they seem to think that a real war should't take that much longer either. Most of them (especially during the Vietnam conflict) spent so much time avoiding the obligation to their Nation to serve it in times of war, they have no understanding of how one is fought.
Query: is the WaPo publishing this convicted felon because he is a Christie, or is it publishing this Christie because he is a convicted felon? Does anyone have any reason to believe anything this lousy little jerk has to say?
Hey, Chuckie-poo! Did Jesus help you burglarize the Watergate? Come on, convicted felon! Why the hell do you believe anyone should have any trust in your word, you poor pathetic little liar?
Dear Tooth Fairy
Where were you last weekend?
I put my tooth under my pillow
Next morning there was nothing there.
Not even my tooth.
Wotwentwong?
I know you're somewhere around
because everyone tells me you are.
But any more disappointments like that,
and I might stop believing in you.
80+ posts and each one communicates the same "talking points" from the blogs. So much for "On Faith" being a conversation where progress can actually be made. Disappointing.....

There's something equally creepy and sinister about men like Charles Colson. They lie and manipulate and burn with righteous conviction, but they are lethally dangerous.

Dear Mr. Colson

Marty,
You just have to ignore those fools.

Dear Tooth Fairy
Where were you last weekend?
I put my tooth under my pillow
Next morning there was nothing there.
Not even my tooth.
Wotwentwong?
I know you're somewhere around
because everyone tells me you are.
But any more disappointments like that,
and I might stop believing in you.

80+ posts and each one communicates the same "talking points" from the blogs. So much for "On Faith" being a conversation where progress can actually be made. Disappointing.....
