It is not for me to categorize everyone who subscribes to a particular religion as violent, because many Muslims are not. However, it is a historical fact that Islam has advanced mostly by imposition, force, war and violence, including forced conversions.
If Islam wishes to coexist with other faiths it must "excommunicate" the violent from within its ranks. Muslim scholars and leaders must also recant on the meaning of "jihad" as the violent destruction of "infidels" and teach a faith that is advanced by example and persuasion, not violence and anger.
If the violent do not speak for Islam, Muslims must remove them from leadership positions. If they do not do so effectively and convincingly, most people will come to regard their faith as inherently violent and unworthy of the God they claim to worship and represent.
