If we believe that God is so great that our best thought of God is like a child's crayon picture of the sky ...then we'll know that however true, beautiful, and good our knowledge of God may be, it is nothing close to a monopoly

A lot of talk of ignorance in the comments to this piece. The real ignorance I see associated with the situation Great Britian (GB) and so many other western countries finds themselves today with respect to Islamic barbarians was the ignorant decisions that allowed these barbarians in western countries in the first place. Why they thought a culture so foreign to our advanced societies with liberties, respect for wormen, and individual rights could easily assimilate I do not know. Now they are here. What to do about it? Who knows! Edward Gibbon, the eminent English historian, postulates in his book the "Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire" that one of the significant reasons that Rome was eventually vanquished by the barbarians was the effect of an effeminate form of Christianity on the martial Roman culture. He says it was the Christian doctrines of pacifism and pusillanimity that changed the Roman culture from a martial to a wimpy (my word) culture. I do not believe authentic Christianity ascribes to these degenerate doctrines. Well, by the Archbishops statements of proposed compromises to the muslims we see these liberal Christian doctrines are still alive and well in post modern Europe today. Are we headed the way of Rome?

In response to Brian Mclaren's article on God's greatness overshadowing any presumed monopoly on truth we may claim... Bravo!
He reminds us that " we are all searching... for a humble confidence that would move us toward respectful conversation".
Dare we listen to the other? Are we rooted and deepening enough to open to others in their faith? Rather than living out of fear let us live from the trusting of faith. In our common humanity and humility we find a source of joyful and respectful conversation.
Thanks Brian Mclaren for a timely reminder.
Peace,

I am in tune with you about the greatness of God. this is the first time I have read OnFaith and Brian. There are some thought provoking moments and beautiful descriptions. I am 59 and have lived more then 1/2 my life. The question comes to me what is next? From what I have read here, it feels like God grads on the curve, or not at all. If there is a heaven will he take our flawed selves there. Is perfection there perfection that I can achieve on my own without God's intervention? No doubt we are children when compared to the God of the universe. The concepts I have read this afternoon seem to be a throw back to the late 1800's when it was conceived that man would just keep getting better, and that the discovery of the modern world proved it. History has proven that to be an incorrect proposition. Is the message of Christ the true way to God or just one of the ways. There is a lot of nice talk here but what is the consequence of my life one second after i die? Should i be reading Jane Fonda instead of the Jesus, it seems that if I am just a nice enough guy, care for the poor, and take care of my neighbor God automatically says yes to my eternal future...that I have earned a spot. I would be interested to hear some views on this....gk

Kelly,
You have the right idea - it is God who has the monopoly on truth - not us. I wish I could share with the other Christian brothers that everyone comes to the Bible with a dark lens that distorts what we hear.
If one cannot even imagine that thier own interpretation may be wrong, discussion is futile. Although a conservative protestant that has some issues with Brian, I wholeheartly support his exploration of Biblical truth - we can all learn more about the truth of Jesus.

In the context of this question, I thought sharing some of the instructions the Apostle Paul gave on Christian dialogue would be enlightening:
PHILIPPIANS 1:15-17
“15 True, some are preaching the Christ through envy and rivalry, but others also through goodwill. 16 The latter are publicizing the Christ out of love, for they know I am set here for the defense of the good news; 17 but the former do it out of contentiousness, not with a pure motive, ....”
PHILIPPIANS 2:1-4
“2 If, then, there is any encouragement in Christ, ...., 3 doing nothing out of contentiousness or out of egotism, but with lowliness of mind considering that the others are superior to YOU, 4 keeping an eye, not in personal interest upon just YOUR own matters, but also in personal interest upon those of the others.”
2 TIMOTHY 2:14-15
“14 Keep reminding them of these things, charging them before God as witness, not to fight about words, a thing of no usefulness at all because it overturns those listening. 15 Do your utmost to present yourself approved to God, a workman with nothing to be ashamed of, handling the word of the truth aright.”
2 TIMOTHY 2:23-25
“23 Further, turn down foolish and ignorant questionings, knowing they produce fights. 24 But a slave of the Lord does not need to fight, but needs to be gentle toward all, qualified to teach, keeping himself restrained under evil, 25 instructing with mildness those not favorably disposed; . . .”
I especially like the last verse about keeping restrained.

Kelly,
I agree with Thinking Out Loud. If a Christian cannot support the authority of Scripture as the ultimate authority, what faith can we have? The Apostle Paul makes it very clear in 2 Timothy 3:16 that "ALL Scripture is God-breathed and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness." God himself said that about His Word, and has given it to us as His revelation about Himself FOR US to learn more about Him. We'll never know everything about Him this side of heaven, but what He has told us about Himself, we can trust as truth. I just want to understand your point...are you denying that fact? Paul also states in 2 Timothy 4:1-5 that we are to preach the Word. That's it...nothing else but the Word because the time is coming when people will not endure sound doctrine. They want to hear anything and everything except the truth of God's Word. If they will endure something from the Bible, it is usually something that will tickle their ears. However, we must preach and teach the whole counsel of God, which does include John 14:6. You can spin it anyway you want to, but it means exactly what it says: Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. And no one will come to the Father except through Christ. I don't want to do much exegetical work, but quickly, here's what it means:
1. Jesus is THE way to the Father. He is not A way, but THE way.
2. Jesus is THE truth. Anything that He says we can take as absolute truth because He is God incarnate.
3. Jesus is THE LIFE. In Him, we can have eternal life. Without Him, the condemnation for our sins remains on us.
4. The second part of this verse is just a summary in case you didn't understand it the first time. Jesus reiterates, "No one can come to the Father except through me." It is the inverse of the same argument. In essence, He says, "I am the way to the Father, all of the other supposed ways are not."
Kelly, if this isn't your interpretation of this verse, please share.
Just one more passage to quote: John 3:19-21 - "And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their deeds were evil. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his deeds have been carried out in God."
I pray that God will cleanse us all from our pride so that we may walk in His marvelous light and we will know the truth. May God bless us as week seek to more fully understand Him. To Him be the glory!

Kelly,
It's not that hard. Just read the rest of John 14 and it's made abundantly clear what was meant by those words.
Regarding your comment / question:
"There have been MANY great Christians, many great men and women who have studied the Scriptures, in Hebrew and with a great knowledge of Chrisitan history, and they do not all agree. Why is that? "
That's simple, Read Matthew the 7th chapter and you will see that not all claiming to be christian are. Paul backed this up at Acts 20:29-30, but you already knew that.
I will say you are an interesting case - A Christian who takes issue with quoting the bible.
To properly reciprocate let me say - I guess that's to be expected from a member of a church who accepted all the pagan holidays into christianity. The same church that says tradition and the bible. Kinda reminds me of Matthew 23:27.

So is God the God that Brian believes in? If so, why that God and not another god? Why should I or anyone follow the way of Jesus? Does Jesus have truth for me to believe and obey? If he does, why would Brian encourage me to believe it if he himself cannot trust his grasp of God's truth?

We offend our common dignity when we approach each other with the power of “being right” instead of grace. Arguing about the piety and purity of each other will just find us all lacking.
I hope we can return the discussion to our understanding of God. We have much to discuss and much to learn.

Neil-
Don't be so uptight. Quoting a bunch of Bible verses at people will never get you anywhere. In fact, you'll turn most people listening too you "OFF."
Christ has made many things clear, indeed. About that, you are right. As to what ALL the implications of His words are... that is NOT clear. It is such a protestant thing to do, to assume that we can just read a verse and know what EXACTLY God meant... to assume that we, not God, have the monopoly of truth. You assume that your own understanding of the Scripture is the only truth. There have been MANY great Christians, many great men and women who have studied the Scriptures, in Hebrew and with a great knowledge of Chrisitan history, and they do not all agree. Why is that? Because God's truth is greater than we are. I would think, you should respect the Lord enough not to presume that you would put limitations on God's truth.
"I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."
-What does that MEAN? The typical analogies given to explain this, are actually no where in Scripture. You act as if this is clearly laid out with a step by step process. It's not.
At the very least, try to understand where your brothers and sisters in Christ are coming from. Don't just quote Bible verses at them. Brian's read them. So have I.

Brian, thanks for being bold enough to engage the tension that so many of us feel everyday: the tension between holding onto what we believe, but not so tightly that we mangle it into something worthless.
Your words, as usual, are encouraging, and spurn me onto understanding the Way of Jesus more and more.

Brian still doesn't understand Christianity and continues to run from the cross of Christ. If he were a believer (Christian), he would be pointing everyone to the Truth-Jesus Christ.
Jesus declared a monopoly on the truth when He said, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." (John 14:6) He also said, in Matthew 12:30, "He who is not with me is against me, and he who does not gather with me scatters."
In these two verses Christ made it clear that there is only one right way, and it is His way. Every other way is wrong. Coming from a man who claimed to be God, these two statements should certainly gain our attention.
Here's a verse for the pastor who is afraid to place a cross outside his building. In Luke 9:23 Jesus said, "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me." The cross is the essential meaning of Christianity. The cross should be embraced and preached about on every possible occasion.
Make no mistake, there are many false brothers out there claim that they know Christ, but they only know human wisdom and selfish pride. Jesus Christ never minced words when He preached the Gospel. No one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born again. (John 3:3) In the same way, any of you who does not give up everything he has cannot be my disciple. (Luke 14:33) The man who loves his life will lose it, while the man who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Fatheer will honor the one who serves me. (John 12:25-26)
Brian told me over 10 years ago, when I first got saved, that I had a fervent spirit because I was a young Christian, but that would fade. Well, I found out that his wisdom was earthly, uspiritual, and of the devil (James 3:15) Jesus Christ, who is my life (Colossians 3:4), never fades. He only grows stronger in me.
