As a Catholic, I find it strange that some commentators presume that the people listening to a sermon are supposed to agree with everything the preacher says

Hillary Clinton called a “baby killer;” Jewish rabbis call Palestinians as “terrorists;” Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson claim the 9/11 attacks were punishment for the sins of the United States [like Rev. Wright]? Yes these are all inappropriate forms of discourse and deserving of condemnation. Parishoners have an obligation to confront this sort of hate speech ESPECIALLY in their own church. If Obama confronted his pastor and was unable to influence a reasonable moderation in view and speech, then he ABSOLUTELY should have disavowed that church.

If politicians certified it as being Christian that would all but guarantee that it wasn't.

To Mark Allen:
I found on a KKK website the same reference to a charter for the 1915 restored KKK. It was charted in several states and backed up with a Congressional version in which the Christian inspiration was reaffirmed.

Elohist and the Catholic church of the Middle Ages claimed Christianity as its owned while busily burning Christians at the stake for heresy. The Klan is no more Christian than bgone. It is in point of fact just another bunch of more or less leftist social engineers whose only difference from the others is what they want to engineer.

The 1915 version, the Imperial KKK was charted by various states and the Congress as a "Christian" organization.

It's different when you have a pastor wearing african clothing, preaching hate for your country and saying crazy things about America giving a race AIDS is not the same as disagreeing about doctrine.

Athena my girl in case you were too blind to notice there are as many if not more haters in Obama's campaign as there are against it and likely a lot more. I dislike Obama's ideas and the notion that we all want peace prosperity and happiness isn't an idea it is a statement of fact. The differences I have with Obama is how best to get there.

ByeByeObama:
be honest. show some intellectual integrity. own up. and don't belittle your readers.
if you don't agree, grow a spine, stand up and leave. then talk about your objections and write about them. but don't come crying back when you are caught!
this is not just a question of not agreeing with some details, this is about a MUCH MORE fundamental objection.
ps: just how can ANYONE think of this nut-job as a person of God, let alone invite him to your wedding and have him bless your kids?! so much for judgement when his own judgement about his friends is so despicable! and coming right after the spitzer episode, this just underlines just why voters should NEVER believe politicans who sound too good to be true!

Athena:
Bowe - I've heard that it's up on YouTube already. I'd send you the link, but my work blocks YouTube.
Mr Stevens-Arroyo - THANK YOU. Although I am a former Catholic, I am also having trouble grasping this idea that one should leave the church if they disagree with what's being said in the pulpit. I mean, in the parish I grew up in, they rotated priests every 3-5 years or so, but the Pastor (we had a Monseignor) stayed put. So, if there was a problem with one guy, the Diocese would rotate him to another church.
In my case, I left the Church because I disagree with it on many fundamental issues. However, my husband is still a Catholic, and I still attend Mass on certain occasions (usually involving his or my parents).
I went out and actually read Trinity UCC's website and made myself acquainted with their teachings. I think that a lot of Catholics who came of age in the "social justice, liberation theology" era would agree with their tenets.

Mark Allen:
I'd like the source on this alleged "Congressional certification" of the KKK as being "Christian." Apart from a blatant violation of the Establishment Clause, if such a thing ever took place, it also flies in the face of the actions of the 48th Congress, which in 1871 passed the "Klu Klux Klan Act," online at http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Ku_Klux_Klan_Act_of_1871, outlawing participation in the KKK.

Mr. G:
I agree with most of what you have to say. The comments that were made in no way invalidates the message that Christianity has to share, nor does it invalidate the faith of Mr. Obama. However, there needed to have been some statement made about the comments. The book of Proverbs has this quote (correct me if I'm wrong): "Rebuke a fool and you'll be scorned; rebuke a wise man and he will thank you." The comments needed to be addressed and were handled well by Mr. Obama, who denounced the comments, not the Pastor himself.

Thanks for making this point. I am waiting to see what Rev. Thistlethwaite says about this, or even Dr. Elliott.
I grew up in the United Church of Christ and the guiding principle we were taught was to think for ourselves. No one, by virtue of education, social standing or position in the church, spoke for the rest of us. Even in matters of doctrine, the most common answer was "read your Bible, pray about it, and follow your conscience." The quotations I've seen from Rev. Wright are not on matters of doctrine.
When I was in the RCIA program to become Catholic, there were many questions about what to do about priests and other religious who seemed misguided and/or overly rigid in their advice to parishioners. We were told to pray for those people, especially if they appeared to misrepresent the views of the church or of Christ.
Neither denomination counseled me to quit the church if I was uncomfortable with words from the pulpit. BTW I never quit the UCC, just moved away (geographically) from my home town and its church.

The Spirit of God says there is a voice inside each and every one of you there is a voice that wants to come out and be heard! For the believer that voice is the Spirit of Truth the Spirit of Love the Spirit of Christ. He says can you hear it? Can you hear it inside of you can you hear it in your conscience? Can you hear it says the Lord for I am speaking and gathering My flock into My pastures. I am gathering them for now is the time that they need safety from the plans of the enemy and I am calling them in and gathering them into My arms so that they might be safe.
The Spirit of God says watch what I do for the time is now where I will come and send you an abundance! I will send it to you and with glory, wisdom, power and strength so that you can overcome in the next few years. Believe what I am about to do for you in the next few years for I know who the next President is and I tell you there will be great leadership under his voice. This Bush that is in the White House as of now will go out with My glory says the Lord.
I am telling you now why all the worry about the economy? For they say recession and I say phooey, phooey, phooey. Soon they will say oh it’s too late but I tell you watch what I am about to do! Watch Me bring you technologies for energy beyond your beliefs and many will say how did we hit this record? For once the spoils are gone I will bring back the fruit from the storehouse in your nation!
Watch what I do in your life for many are about to go through a period where they will look like they are in a daze. They will get the strength they need from Me to get through their period of thoughts of distortion into My peace and grace as they overcome the trials that are about to face this nation.
God says He has heard the cries of the innocent and unborn and as this nation continue to pray without ceasing I will give you something to rejoice about for when I show you life and as the children as such in the kingdom of heaven the numbers of abortion will go down in your nation and the number of adoptions will rise for if you allow Me to have preeminence I will give you another judge that will bring glory to My name for this can come to pass soon while America is least expecting it because of the prayers of the righteous. For life is more valuable that silver or gold in My eyes
I tell you show off your light don’t you know that you are a city on a hill and when people see your light they will be attracted to you like a ship looking for the lighthouse. Let the light shine like a flame that is kindled by Christ so that when you shine it will appear in your life for all to see, says the Lord.

Oh yeah! Now tell me you trust God and not God's word known as the Bible. You can read the Bible?
http://www.hoax-buster.org/sellyoursoul or at least look at the pictures?
Faith is in:
1. Sacred scriptures, all faiths have one.
2. Professionals with sacred scriptures. They go by several names, priest, Ayatollah etc.
3. Any faith left over can be lathered on God.
Lucifer only wants to be God. He gets the next best thing with people trusting ministers that are clearly just like him, out to get everything they can. Barak's minister is typical except he has spilled his innermost feelings.
Bottom line - preaching is a career like bank robbing. The need for a profession of "faith in the Bible" to be a candidate for president causes candidates to get in bed with some rather unsavory folk all of which are not yet recognized for what they are.
