For more than 40 years, “On Faith” panelist Rabbi Adin Steinsaltz has devoted himself to the monumental undertaking of translating and reinterpreting the Talmud, the vast collection of rabbinic writings that constitute Jewish civil and religious laws. Steinsaltz, who lives in Jerusalem, began this task in 1965, when he founded The Israel Institute for Talmudic Publications. The Steinsaltz Edition of the Talmud, of which 37 volumes have been published so far, has made the Talmud accessible to tens of thousands of Hebrew speakers. In 1989, he began producing an English edition of 22 volumes. Since 1994, 15 volumes have been published in French, and four have appeared in Russian. The Talmud project has been described as the most important Jewish publication endeavor of the 20 th Century. Steinsaltz has written some 60 books and hundreds of articles on a wide variety of topics, including Hasidism and the Jewish mystical tradition of Kabbalah. One of his most popular books is The Thirteen Petalled Rose , which he describes as “a little book for the soul.” In 1989, Steinsaltz established a Russian branch of Mekor Chaim--the first Jewish institution to receive official recognition in the former Soviet Union . He also founded the Aleph Society, and the Mekor Chaim Educational Institutions. In 1988, Steinsaltz received the prestigious Israel Prize--his nation's highest honor. He has lectured at major universities and research institutions in the United States and Europe, including Princeton University , Yale University , Columbia University , the Woodrow Wilson Center , Oxford University and the Sorbonne. IT followed in the Roman Christian minds that "The KiNG Became a G-D" and would have Divine Power , from that Time Forward, to "Answer the Prayers" of the 'CHRiSTiANS' and determine the Course Of HUMAN AFFAiRS , as well as to make known, among all Humanity, On EARTH, the FUTURE Throught 'The SiGNS iN HEAVEN' and through His "PROPHETS" on EARTH similar in the way to which MOSES (another 'G-D Player' & Noval Star of the OT, et al) had dipicted Himself to the

'PASSOVER-LiNE'

Prophets & Profits, Messenger & Cashregister:

And "The P.rophecy is more important than the p.rophet." And

Not just for Profits or for profits!

Mr. Obama is not a 'prophet' and maybe somewhat of a quasi 'messenger' , because of his BARATONE Voice, but surely not as thee 'Prophet' as Messenger!

The Nation Of Islam, Oprah Winfrey, Jesse Jackson, NAACP, Al Sharpton, Malcom-x Shabaaz et al are behind Borack Hussaine Obama.

It is not his Time. He has NOt much Experience to run such a Big Economy via Both Politics & Military Government & Government for a 'Stagflated' & inflation soaked American Society .

GOG = TRUTH (opposite of MYTH) Hence HiLLARY & her Voters, and on the other Hand

MAGOG = iLLUSiON (Not Truth) & Hence BORACK & his Voters!

Here is something to contemplate ON: "PROPHETS oN EARTH;:

When a Semidivine King would Die, it was believed that "The-King became a G-D" and now had divine Powers instead of merely semidivine power.

Hence, when the Christ of Christianity Died after certain Roman sub-National Authorities had superscribed,

"THE KiNG OF THE JU's"

on the sign at Rabbi-Jesus's Death Site called 'Golgotha' in one in one creature tongue and 'Cavalry' in another Tongue of the "Mixed-Multitudes" that watched the "Jewishly" (& Pagans/Idolatars Pre-Islamics "Arabs" who was also in on this Set-up, not unjustly "Pharasees") sanctioned and "Romanly" executed the DEATH PENALTY

Please, see any OT/NT @ JOHN:19:17-24 et seq

Mason:

First, we are talking about an alliance folks, a friendly mutually beneficial relationship. If one is not interested in it one is free to bow out.

Second, as Rabbi Steinsaltz remarked, in our scientific pursuits there has been a lot of damage to humanity and, i would add to the environment.

Third, almost of us have made clear here and/or in other threads that, in our pursuits of religion some of us have done some damage to humanity and, i would add, to the environment.

So, science and religion are coming along, just like i like to believe humanity is coming along. All three are emergent.

Scientific method has evolved and i would add Talmud is a fascinatingly evolved body of intellectual and legal method. The evolution of Democracy and Human rights has its moments of splendor and its setbacks. Capitalism too has been a fascinating and evolving participant in this field of emergence. Generally, when we are not fighting over who's failures and mistakes have done the most damage, we are learning from all of the mistakes.

I appreciate that many here are pleased at the proliferation of alternative politics, religion medicine and ethics. I believe a sincere commitment to a body of ethical study and practice is valuable to everyone who would hold a personal or collective philosophy of action or life. And, yes, i think this is not merely possible, but necessary. To be agreeable, however, i certainly won't say mandatory ;-)

If one's grounding in Secular Humanism keeps one from making harmful political, scientific, environmental and financial decisions, that is a good thing.

I believe Rabbi Steinsaltz may have misspoken slightly when he said: "Science and religion draw their *facts* from different sources," etc.

The fact is Legal, Religious, Scientific and Political disciplines have different methods of evaluating differing states of affairs.

The ongoing questions, methods and goals of these disciplines and the people who pursue them can be (and frequently are) assisted and guided by others in a multi-disciplinary spirit and/or field.

Some of the best Secular Humanism has to offer comes from Psychology, Religion, Anthropology, Science and Law.

Now we can again listen to Rabbi Steinsaltz:
"It is unlikely that these systems will offer the same approach to every subject, but there can be areas of overlap without resulting in entanglement. Similarly, not every idea needs to be discussed; some concepts can remain solely in the realm of science, or of religion. Thus, there exists the possibility of an alliance between science and religion, though it is by no means a simple one.

Far clearer than the “how” of this alliance is the “why.” Science does not have its own purpose or inherent morality; in many ways, its only goal is progress. Science is an extremely powerful tool with the capacity to build, as well as to destroy. It has been used by humans for many purposes, some good and some evil. Oftentimes, the real danger lies not in the failed experiment that causes a catastrophe, but in the scientific successes that are destructive in the long run, even though no one meant to cause harm. The influence of religion helps to preserve and protect life on Earth by giving science a moral direction and higher purpose.

This alliance is beneficial to the religious sphere, as well. Science offers tools for implementing lofty ideas and creates clarity and order, thus providing structure for religious ways of thinking. And in many ways, the difficulties inherent in this tumultuous relationship serve as a form of criticism of religion, which is oftentimes not critical enough of itself."

I found Rabbi Steinsaltz's aspirations refreshing and positive once i realised this is neither a unilateral nor even bilateral issue, but multilateral, multi dimensional, multi disciplinary.

Henry James:

Yuck indeed.

But you are not being "mutually respectful."

I don't know which side to come down on:

Polite mutual respect that ignores truth and reason.

Or plain speaking of the truth (like yours) that runs the risk of being impolite.

Heck:
i think i'll go with truth.
i'll be polite tomorrow.

The_Archon:

Again with the religion + science stuff.

"Similarly, not every idea needs to be discussed"... no kidding. Zombies, talking snakes and donkeys, magical fruit, global floods... at least this author is honest about keeping a firm disparity between reality and fantasy. Trouble is, he wants to apply science *whenever he finds it convenient*, not to examine silly fairy tales.

Points for effort however.

Chris Everett:

I'm reminded of the distinction between science and religion made by Einstein (paraphrasing): "Science is the study of what is; religion is the study of what ought to be." Of course, Einstein was in no way endorsing any established religion; he was mainly trying to show that religion is overstepping its bounds when it makes asseertions about what is true in the physical, natural world.

I agree with Einstein that science is not equipped to be the basis for ethical behavior (although it certainly informs ethical behavior), but in no way do I think religion has earned the right to step into the gap. Over and over again, throughout all of human history, in all ages and all cultures, religion has proved itself incompetent and utterly unworthy of the task, producing misery and hatred wherever it goes.

Why turn once more to the same tired lie? Why not turn to Secular Humanism, or Psychology, or Ethical Culture? At least these approaches aren't intrinsically flawed the way religion is; at least they seek their own development and are open to growth and change; at least they are human enterprises that willingly admit their own imperfections. Unlike religion that seeks to tie our necks to a post.

As for nature and the physical world, we say science. Why not astrology? Why not parapsychology? Why not mesmerism? Because they're shams and we know it, and we just don't buy that kind of nonsense anymore. But for ethics and morality we still have people like Mr. Steinsaltz peddling his oil. Who needs it. Yuck.

Anonymous:

There is no God. And as there is no God,religion is silly nonsense.
It's time to put childish fantasies of a God behind us,and move into the new century, where common-sense
and scientific understanding of the world hold promise of an incredible new age,if religious folk don't blow us all to smithereens before we get there.

Former Christian:

To Henry James: Excellent comments and observations.

To Adin Steinsaltz: Before making general purpose statements, please provide some support by citing specific areas where religion provides a moral direction. Certainly, based on some of the most popular biblical stories, the moral guidance offered in the bible is just plain awful -- even immoral.

The story of Adam and Eve is good example. If they were so innocent then surely God would be smart enough not to punish mankind, forever.

Or how about the flood? What moral values are transmitted when God decides to kill everything but a few? Are babies deserving of death? How about the other animals -- are they even capable of sin? It seems like the God as described in the Old Testament is unjust, holds a grudge forever and unworthy of worship. I would not want my children, let alone science, taking its more values from the bible or religion.

BGone:

Not so fast, Henry James. Nostradamus' "just found" work in picture-writing says the end is near for all three great faiths, bracketed between 1992 and 2012. 2012 is when the sun, dragging earth along reaches the plane of the galaxy. Some kind of bad news?

Ever so rarely those profits say something we can live with. Now picture the joint scientific conference where the representatives of religion begin by saying, "we've been found out."

Among the more interesting aspects of this new work by the great "seer" is his "snake with man head." What does it mean? Could it be a negative of "man with snake [on] head?"

Out of the mouth of another snake headed serpent comes three balls of blood signifying something. What? Could that be the three great faiths that come from Pharaoh, man with snake on head?

Nostradamus' pictures are as crude as those at http://www.hoax-buster.org and have verbiage to give hints at the meaning.

So maybe religion does have "another" source. I'm willing to wager they pick and choose what that source says - end of religion, pope in exile, mass slaying of the clergy, anti Christ identified, (Jesus)... He even shows Jesus dying by "elongated object" through body. Where have I heard that before?

The Vatican confiscated the original book as it was written one page at a time and reproduced it yet there are no copies anywhere to be found. Wonder why they did that, who got the copies and what happened to them?

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Science, yes, is a method for truth in a real world. However inherent morality may also be an evolved strategy for human success that can be discovered by science. Attributing morality to non-real mechanisms is a cop out of thinking, begs for revelation and encourages the worse from those without a sense of humility. My fifty foot Jesus told me that!

Henry James:

the Good Rabbi says
"science and religion draw their facts from different sources."
Can we have an example of a "Religious Fact."?
God exists? The Red Sea Parted? The Bush didn't burn.?

He also writes "The influence of religion helps to preserve and protect life on Earth by giving science a moral direction and higher purpose."

Based on no evidence. And contradicted by lots of evidence.
certainly science needs to be moderated by ethics and morality, but

People are equally Moral with or without religion.
Virtually Godless societies like Holland and Japan are more moral than the Jesus-loving US of A.

The Rabbi is Absolutely Wrong to say we need religion to moderate science. We need morality and common sense, which work as well or better WITHOUT religion.
