The better question is it God's will for a Christian to lead a nation?

In regards to politics and holding public office, what are Jesus Christ’s teachings?
When Jesus was on earth, thousands of honest hearted people recognized, not just his greatness, but his concern for others. It’s no surprise that they wanted to make him king.
(John 6:10, 14, 15) 10 “Jesus said: “Have the men recline as at meal.” Now there was a lot of grass in the place. Therefore the men reclined, about five thousand in number…. 14 Hence when the men saw the signs he performed, they began to say: “This is for a certainty the prophet that was to come into the world.” 15 Therefore Jesus, knowing they were about to come and seize him to make him king, withdrew again into the mountain all alone.”
Jesus declined to get involved in politics.
Jesus' response was based on at least three factors: his Father's view of expressions of human self-determination, which include human rule; Jesus' awareness that there are powerful, hidden forces working against even the best human efforts at rulership; and God's purpose to establish a heavenly government to rule over the entire earth.
His Father’s view: The lamentable record of human self-rule confirms the truthfulness of Jeremiah 10:23: "I well know, O Jehovah, that to earthling man his way does not belong. It does not belong to man who is walking even to direct his step." History has proved that humans do not have the capacity to rule successfully without their Creator.
Jesus fully agreed. Independence from God was loathsome to him. "I do nothing of my own initiative," he said. "I always do the things pleasing to [God]." (John 4:34; 8:28, 29) With no divine authorization to receive kingship from humans, Jesus did not even consider accepting it. This does not mean, however, that he was reluctant to help his fellowman. On the contrary, he did all in his power to assist people to find the greatest happiness then and in the future. He even gave his life for mankind. (Matthew 5:3-11; 7:24-27; John 3:16) But Jesus knew that "for everything there is an appointed time," including God's time to assert his sovereignty over mankind. (Ecclesiastes 3:1; Matthew 24:14, 21, 22, 36-39)

Jesus kept out of politics because he was aware of powerful, hidden forces.
Satan, the world's secret ruler, the Bible tells us, offered Jesus "all the kingdoms of the world and their glory" in exchange for one act of worship. (Matthew 4:8-10) Jesus was offered world rulership—but on the Devil's terms. Satan could actually make such an offer because, as Jesus himself called the Devil, he is "the ruler of the world". (John 14:30). The apostle Paul described him as "the god of this system of things." (2 Corinthians 4:4; Ephesians 6:12).
Jesus did not fall prey to this temptation. Jesus knew that the Devil does not have mankind's best interests at heart. He described Satan as "a murderer" and as "the father of lies and of all that is false." (John 8:44). A world "lying in the power" of a wicked spirit can never be truly happy. (1 John 5:19) But the Devil will not have this authority indefinitely. Jesus will shortly depose Satan and completely eliminate his influence.(Hebrews 2:14; Revelation 20:1-3).
A third reason why Jesus stayed out of politics is that he knew that at a future set time, God would establish a heavenly government to rule over the earth. The Bible calls this government God's Kingdom, and it was the main theme of Jesus' teaching. (Luke 4:43; Revelation 11:15) Jesus taught his disciples to pray for that Kingdom to come, for only under its rule will 'God's will be done on earth as it is in heaven.' (Matthew 6:9, 10)
Daniel 2:44 says, "In the days of those kings [ruling at the end of the present system] the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that will never be brought to ruin. And the kingdom itself will not be passed on to any other people. It will crush and put an end to all these [man-made] kingdoms, and it itself will stand to times indefinite." God's Kingdom will have to "crush" earthly rulerships because these insist on perpetuating the God-defying spirit of self-determination promoted by Satan back in the garden of Eden. In addition to working against mankind's best interests, those who strive to perpetuate that spirit put themselves on a collision course with the Creator. (Psalm 2:6-12; Revelation 16:14, 16)

Jesus always did things God's way. Instead of choosing an independent course and trying to prop up or improve the existing system of things by political means, he worked hard to advance the interests of God's Kingdom, the only solution to the world's ills.

God's Kingdom is the real key to a truly happy world, and the message announcing it is rightly described as good news.

In order to help people make an informed decision about rulership, Jesus commissioned his disciples to preach the "good news of the kingdom . . . in all the inhabited earth for a witness to all the nations" before the end of the present system comes. (Matthew 24:14)

This is the message all true Christians should preach: God’s Kingdom is the only solution to the world’s problems.

Oh puhleeze. Is book censorship in God's will? No. Is sarah's anti-gay stance in God's will? Most definitely NOT. Is her LYING about being able "see Russia from Alaska" in God's will? How about lying about earmarks, such as the money for her "bridge to nowhere"? Um, no.

About the ONLY job she's qualified for is dog catcher, and I'm not even sure about that.

Actually Palin did not assert the War in Iraq was God's will, thank ABC editing for that. When her statement is heard in its entirety without the ABC editing crews assistance you find Governor Palin humbly admitting we should hope what we do is in God's will. A big difference. I certainly want a leader humble, honest and religious enough to hope that the decisions she makes are in God's will.

If Lehman left you out in the cold and AIG gave you the jitters then there's the futures market and Google should get you Burning Man. It's going to hot on those servers and we'll serve it up cold turkey for a diet Thanksgiving.

Ike did $22 billion of damage there and now we are going to send some failed Wall Street firms all this cash for screwing themselves so we can all get screwed on future deals. Sources close to AIG were quoted as saying it might go bankrupt if it could not raise massive new finance by Wednesday.

It beats having everybody else go bankrupt because your world domination scheme failed to dominate. If there's one thing worse than a monopoly, it's an international monopoly. Chapter V: The Keating Five

As a war hero and U.S. senator, John McCain's life has been chronicled in pictures.

There are grainy mug shots of a young McCain, printed in U.S. newspapers after his jet was shot down over North Vietnam. There are black-and-white images of his return, grinning and waving, his hair turned prematurely gray by 5 1/2 years of malnutrition and torture in a Hanoi prison camp.

In happier times, there is McCain holding his newborn daughter while his wife, Cindy, smiles from her hospital bed.

But it is an innocent vacation picture that symbolizes McCain's Achilles heel and carries the reminder of the scandal that threatened his political career.

In the picture, which was taken in the Bahamas, McCain is seated on a bandstand while wearing an outrageous, straw party hat. Next to him on the dais, a bottle tipped to his lips, sits Charles Keating III, son of developer Charles H Keating Jr.

McCain calls the Keating scandal ''my asterisk.'' Over the years, his opponents have failed to turn it into a period.

It all started in March 1987. Charles H Keating Jr., the flamboyant developer and anti-porn crusader, needed help. The government was poised to seize Lincoln Savings and Loan, a freewheeling subsidiary of Keating's American Continental Corp.

As federal auditors crawled all over Lincoln, Keating was not content to wait and hope for the best. He'd spread a lot of money around Washington, and it was time to call in his chits.

One of his first stops was Sen. Dennis DeConcini. The Arizona lawmaker was one of Keating's most loyal friends in Congress, and for good reason. Keating had given thousands of dollars to DeConcini's campaigns. At one point, DeConcini even pushed Keating for ambassador to the Bahamas, where Keating owned a luxurious vacation home.

Now Keating had a job for DeConcini. He wanted him to organize a meeting with the regulators. The message: Get off Lincoln's back. Eventually, DeConcini would set up a meeting between five senators and the regulators. One of them was John McCain.

McCain knew Keating well. His ties to the home builder dated to 1981, when the two men met at a Navy League dinner where McCain was the speaker.

After the speech, Keating walked up to McCain and told him that he, too, was a Navy flier, and that he greatly respected McCain's war record. He met McCain's wife and family. The two men became friends.

Charlie Keating always took care of his friends, especially those in politics. John McCain was no exception.

In 1982, during McCain's first run for the House, Keating held a fund-raiser for him, collecting more than $11,000 from 40 employees of American Continental Corp. McCain would spend more than $550,000 to win the primary and the general election.

In 1983, during McCain's second House race, Keating hosted a $1,000-a-plate dinner for McCain, though he had no serious competition and coasted into his second term. When McCain pushed for the Senate in 1986, Keating was there with more than $50,000.

By 1987, McCain had received about $112,000 in political contributions from Keating and his associates.

McCain had also carried a little water for Keating in Washington. While in the House, McCain, along with a majority of representatives, co-sponsored a resolution to delay new regulations designed to curb risky investments by thrifts like Lincoln.
HESITANT PARTICIPANT

Despite his history with Keating, McCain was hesitant about intervening. At that point, he had been in the Senate only three months. DeConcini wanted McCain to fly to San Francisco with him and talk to the regulators. McCain refused.

Keating would not be dissuaded.

On March 24 at 9:30 a.m., Keating went to DeConcini's office and asked him if the meeting with the regulators was on. DeConcini told Keating that McCain was nervous.

''McCain's a wimp,'' Keating replied, according to the book Trust Me, by Michael Binstein and Charles Bowden. ''We'll go talk to him.''

Keating had other business on the Hill and did not reach McCain's office until 1:30. A DeConcini staffer had already told McCain about the wimp comment.

When he arrived, Keating presented McCain with a laundry list of demands for the regulators.

McCain told Keating that he would attend the meeting and find out whether Keating was getting treated fairly, but that was all.

''Keating gave me the clear impression that he expected me to do more,'' McCain said later. ''He had several specific requests.''

When Keating questioned his courage, McCain invoked his POW experience. He told Keating that he didn't spend 5 1/2 years in the Hanoi Hilton to be called a coward.

The two argued, then Keating stormed out.

Despite the dust-up, McCain attended not one but two meetings with the regulators. McCain later explained that he thought it was the right thing to do, because Keating was a constituent.

McCain would live to regret it.

The first meeting, on April 2 in DeConcini's office, included Ed Gray, chairman of the Federal Home Loan Bank Board, as well as four senators: DeConcini, McCain, Alan Cranston, D-Calif., and John Glenn, D-Ohio.

The meeting had a clandestine air. Gray came alone. None of the senators brought their aides. DeConcini asked Gray to withdraw a regulation in order to help Lincoln. Gray shook his head.

For Keating, the meeting was a bust. Gray told the senators that as head of the loan board, he worried about the big picture. He didn't have any specific information about Lincoln. Bank regulators in San Francisco would be versed in that, not him. Gray offered to set up a meeting between the senators and the San Francisco regulators.

The second meeting was on April 9. The same four senators attended, along with Sen. Don Riegle, D-Mich. Also at the meeting were William Black, then deputy director of the Federal Savings and Loan Insurance Corp., James Cirona, president of the Federal Home Loan Bank of San Francisco, and Michael Patriarca, director of agency functions at the FSLIC.

In a recent interview with The Republic, Black said the meeting was a show of force by Keating, who wanted the senators to pressure the regulators into dropping their case against Lincoln. The thrift was in trouble for violating ''direct investment'' rules, which prohibited S&Ls from taking large ownership positions in various ventures.

''The Senate is a really small club, like the cliche goes,'' Black said. ''And you really did have one-twentieth of the Senate in one room, called by one guy, who was the biggest crook in the S&L debacle.''

Black said the senators could have accomplished their goal ''if they had simply had us show up and see this incredible room and said, 'Hi. Charles Keating asked us to meet with you. 'Bye.' ''
'ALWAYS HAMLET'
The five senators, including McCain, seemed like a united front to Black.

''They presented themselves as a group,'' Black said, ''and DeConcini is the dad, who's going to take the primary speaking role. Both meetings are in his office, and in both cases it's 'we' want this, with no one going, 'What do you mean we, kemo sabe?' ''

According to nearly verbatim notes taken by Black, McCain started the second meeting with a careful comment.

''One of our jobs as elected officials is to help constituents in a proper fashion,'' McCain said. ''ACC (American Continental Corp.) is a big employer and important to the local economy. I wouldn't want any special favors for them. . . .

''I don't want any part of our conversation to be improper.''

Black said the comment had the opposite effect for the regulators. It made them nervous about what might really be going on.

''McCain was the weirdest,'' Black said. ''They were all different in their own way. McCain was always Hamlet . . . wringing his hands about what to do.''

Glenn, a former astronaut and the first American to orbit the Earth, was not as tactful.

''To be blunt, you should charge them or get off their backs,'' he told the regulators. ''If things are bad there, get to them. Their view is that they took a failing business and put it back on its feet. It's now viable and profitable. They took it off the endangered species list. Why has the exam dragged on and on and on?''

Added DeConcini, ''What's wrong with this if they're willing to clean up their act?''

Cirona, the banking official, told the senators that it was ''very unusual'' to hold a meeting to discuss a particular company.

DeConcini shot back: ''It's very unusual for us to have a company that could be put out of business by its regulators.''

The meeting went on. McCain was quiet, while DeConcini carried the ball. The regulators told the senators that Lincoln was in trouble. The thrift, Cirona said, was a ''ticking time bomb.''

Then Patriarca made a stunning comment, according to transcripts released later.

''We're sending a criminal referral to the Department of Justice,'' he said. ''Not maybe, we're sending one. This is an extraordinarily serious matter. It involves a whole range of imprudent actions. I can't tell you strongly enough how serious this is. This is not a profitable institution.''

The statement made DeConcini back off a little.

''The criminality surprises me,'' he said. ''We're not interested in discussing those issues. Our premise was that we had a viable institution concerned that it was being overregulated.''

''What can we say to Lincoln?'' Glenn asked.

''Nothing,'' Black responded, ''with regard to the criminal referral. They haven't, and won't be told by us that we're making one.''

''You haven't told them?'' Glenn asked.

''No,'' said Black. ''Justice would skin us alive if we did. Those referrals are very confidential. We can't prosecute anyone ourselves. All we can do is refer it to Justice.''

After the meeting, McCain was done with Keating.

''Again, I was troubled by the appearance of the meeting,'' McCain said later. ''I stated I didn't want any special favors from them. I only wanted them (Lincoln Savings) to be fairly treated.''

Black doesn't completely buy that argument. If McCain was concerned about Keating asking him to do things that were improper, why go to either meeting at all?

Black said McCain probably went because Keating was close to being the political godfather of Arizona and McCain still had plenty of ambition.

''Keating was incredibly powerful,'' Black said. ''And incredibly useful.''

McCain's reservations aside, Keating accomplished his goal. He had bought some time, though the price was very high.
SHORT-LIVED REPRIEVE
A month later, the San Francisco regulators finished a yearlong audit and recommended that Lincoln be seized. But the report was virtually ignored because of politics on the bank board.

Gray was being replaced as chairman by Danny Wall, who was more sympathetic to Keating.

The audit, which described Lincoln as a thrift reeling out of control, sat on a shelf.

In September 1987, the investigation was taken away from the San Francisco office, away from Black and Patriarca. In May 1988, it was transferred to Washington, where Lincoln would get a new audit.

It was a win for Keating. A battle, not the war.

In Phoenix, the move sparked a triumphant party at the posh headquarters of American Continental.

Someone hurled a computer from the second floor, shattering a window. Keating, all 6-feet-5 of him, struck a Superman pose and ripped open his shirt to display a hand-drawn skull and crossbones over the letters FHLBB - the Federal Home Loan Bank Board.

A secretary climbed onto a desk to take photos, and American Continental executive Robert Kielty joined her. Keating grabbed a roll of tape and lashed their legs together.

Potted plants were knocked over. Beer and champagne were spilled on the carved wood desks. Kielty took a bottle of champagne and poured it down another secretary's blouse.

''Get this champagne colder,'' Keating yelled.

Back in San Francisco, Black was fuming.

''Clearly, we were shot in the back,'' he would say later.

Despite the reprieve, Keating's businesses continued to spiral downward, taking the five senators with him. News of the meeting leaked out, and now all five men were answering some very embarrassing questions.

''Did you lean on regulators for Charlie Keating?''

''Did you get campaign contributions in exchange for your cooperation?''

''Why did you protect Keating?''

Together, the five senators had accepted more than $300,000 in contributions from Keating, and their critics added a new term to the American lexicon:

Keating Five.

As the S&L failure deepened, the sheer magnitude of the losses hit the press. Billions of dollars had been squandered. The Keating Five became shorthand for the kind of political influence that money can buy. The five senators were linked as the gang who went to bat for an S&L bandit.

S&L ''trading cards'' came out. The Keating Five card showed Charles Keating holding up his hand, with a senator's head adorning each finger. McCain was on Keating's pinkie.

As the Keating investigation dragged through 1988, McCain dodged the body blows. Most landed on DeConcini, who had arranged the meetings and had other close ties to Keating, including $50 million in loans from Keating to DeConcini's aides.

But McCain made a critical error.

In spinning his side of the Keating story, McCain adopted the blanket defense that Keating was a constituent and that he had every right to ask his senators for help. In attending the meetings, McCain said, he simply wanted to make sure that Keating was treated like any other constituent.

Keating was far more than a constituent to McCain, however.

On Oct. 8, 1989, The Republic revealed that McCain's wife and her father had invested $359,100 in a Keating shopping center in April 1986, a year before McCain met with the regulators.

The paper also reported that the McCains, sometimes accompanied by their daughter and baby-sitter, had made at least nine trips at Keating's expense, sometimes aboard the American Continental jet. Three of trips were made during vacations to Keating's opulent Bahamas retreat at Cat Cay.

McCain also did not pay Keating for the trips until years after they were taken, when he learned that Keating was in trouble over Lincoln. Total cost: $13,433.

When the story broke, McCain did nothing to help himself. When reporters first called him, he was furious. Caught out in the open, the former fighter pilot let go with a barrage of cover fire. Sen. Hothead came out in all his glory.

''You're a liar,''' McCain snapped Sept. 29 when a Republic reporter asked him about business ties between his wife and Keating.

''That's the spouse's involvement, you idiot,'' McCain said later in the same conversation. ''You do understand English, don't you?''

He also belittled the reporters when they asked about his wife's ties to Keating.

''It's up to you to find that out, kids.''

And then he played the POW card.

''Even the Vietnamese didn't question my ethics,'' McCain said.

The paper ran the story a few days later. At a news conference, McCain was a changed man. He stood calmly for 90 minutes and answered every question.

On the shopping center, his defense was simple. The deal did not involve him. The shares in the shopping center had been purchased by a partnership set up between McCain's wife and her father.

But McCain also had to explain his trips with Keating and why he didn't pay Keating back right away.

On that score, McCain admitted he had fouled up. He said he should have reimbursed Keating immediately, not waited several years. His staff said it was an oversight, but it looked bad, McCain jetting around with Keating, then going to bat for him with the federal regulators.

Meanwhile, Lincoln continued to founder.

In April 1989, two years after the Keating Five meetings, the government seized Lincoln, which declared bankruptcy. In September 1990, Keating was booked into Los Angeles County Jail, charged with 42 counts of fraud. His bond was set at $5 million.

During Keating's eventual trial, the prosecution produced a parade of elderly investors who had lost their life's savings by investing in American Continental junk bonds.
'THE ULTIMATE SURVIVOR'
In November 1990, the Senate Ethics Committee convened to decide what punishment, if any, should be doled out to the Keating Five.

Robert Bennett, who would later represent President Bill Clinton in the Paula Jones case, was the special counsel for the committee. In his opening remarks, he slammed DeConcini but went lightly on McCain, the lone Republican ensnared with four Democrats.

''In the case of Senator McCain, there is very substantial evidence that he thought he had an understanding with Senator DeConcini's office that certain matters would not be gone into at the meeting with (bank board) Chairman (Ed) Gray,'' Bennett said.

''Moreover, there is substantial evidence that, as a result of Senator McCain's refusal to do certain things, he had a fallout with Mr. Keating.''

McCain, the ultimate survivor, had dodged another missile.

Among the Keating Five, McCain received the most direct contributions from Keating. But the investigation found that he was the least culpable, along with Glenn. McCain attended the meetings but did nothing afterward to stop Lincoln's death spiral.

Lincoln's losses eventually were set at $3.4 billion, the most expensive failure in the national S&L scandal.

McCain also looked good in contrast to DeConcini, who continued to defend Keating until fall 1989, when federal regulators filed a $1.1 billion civil racketeering and fraud suit against Keating, accusing him of siphoning Lincoln's deposits to his family and into political campaigns.

In the end, McCain received only a mild rebuke from the Ethics Committee for exercising ''poor judgment'' for intervening with the federal regulators on behalf of Keating. Still, he felt tarred by the affair.

The government can take all the remaining AIG and Lehman assets and use them to pay for the war. They wanted the war and now they have it. Sterns & Foster gave 80% and stayed in business. Somebody always has to pay and the war is Big Money and big business. There are all kinds of companies that can make donations to pay for the war. You aren't going to stick the next generation with the tab. They didn't start the war, so they should not pay for it. There's going to be payment or hell to pay. With Big Money, we must always collect. We have to get paid. If some people go bankrupt, well that beats bankrupting the kids in 20 years with interest and penalties for being born American. That won't work.

A life behind walls, doing time on the inside. I'm an outdoorsman, so my idea of Gods will is inside out. You need to start it from seed and let them watch it grow. They seem to want to hold on to the same agenda that led to their decline as recent editorials on gun control in Washington suggest.

The newspaper has beat the drum for a surrender of arms and the message has been rejected, profits have dropped and the business has turned into a hell of a daily challenge. The reader has rejected the view of the editorial writers and responded to a call to arms that echoes across time. The cause of liberty does not change and we need more effort, more arms and less editorial control, leading to false security. That is how the publisher and public benefit from both the first and second amendment protections we inherit and pass to the next generation. We'll see who disarms and who gets armed. It looks worse everyday for the newspaper business. Things can always get worse, they can also get better. We just keep shooting and the presses keep rolling. Newspapers around the world, understandably, recalled the great tragedy that had overtaken America on Sept. 11, 2001--- a tragedy that sprung from religious fanaticism, intolerance and hatred. But hardly any of them referred to an equally significant, but far more constructive, 9/11 of one hundred and fifteen years ago, which was the auspicious date on which the First World Parliament of Religions started in the same country---in Chicago to be precise. It was in this international interfaith gathering that the celebrated ‘Hindoo Monk of India’, as Swami Vivekananda was affectionately described by the American media, preached the importance of religious tolerance and understanding among the followers of the various faiths. In a prophetic utterance (Romain Rolland dubbed him the ‘Prophet of New India’), the Swami had, in his opening speech there, said, “The present convention, which is one of the most august assemblies ever held, is in itself a vindication, a declaration to the world, of the wonderful doctrine preached in the Gita: ‘Whosoever come to Me, through whatsoever for, I reach him; all men are struggling through paths which in the end lead to Me. Sectarianism, bigotry, and its horrible descendant, fanaticism, have along possessed this beautiful earth. They have filled the earth with violence, drenched it often and often with human blood, destroyed civilization and sent whole nations to despair. Had it not been for these horrible demons, human society would be far more advanced that it is now.”1
Alas, if only the world had listened to that voice of sanity of the Swami, and eschewed religious dogmatism, bigotry and intolerance, the second 9/11, that shook America a hundred and eight years later, would never have take place.

We have no way of knowing. All we can do is push things beyond the limits in search of God. It's like love, it's meant to be unlimited and passed to the next generation. Forget take it to the limit. The president is just a social figure. The DOD and CIA are busy right now. The president is having a drink or watching TV and having a good time. Maybe they are having a dinner party. You think you know who is running things and you don't that much. The marketing makes it seem like the president is master of the universe. Everybody gets all excited over nothing. I think the better question is "Does God have a will for us?" then you could ask "Can we know God's will?" A "yes" to either of these suggests that we should all try to understand that will and do it, whether its a question of what I do today, or what the nation does tomorrow. A "no" suggests that anyone who thinks otherwise is wasting time and possibly dangerous.

I'd say the implicit message from most of the media is that the answer is "no". They look down on those who request wisdom from God, and if they try to do God's will, then they are somehow threatening all those don't believe likewise.

I will not suggest that Sarah Palin or George Bush are particularly good at listening to God, but at least they recognize the need to listen.

On the issue of Palin's views, they are scary. Why? Because, unlike Obama, she wishes to impose them on everyone. Obama was unfairly called out and made to affirm his religious faith - he was accused of being a Muslim, which is a phrase we shouldn't have to use anyway. "Accusation" implies wrongdoing, and being a Muslim is not wrongdoing, is it?

Setting that aside, Palin is clearly not all there in her understanding of America. America is, was and always has been a secular nation. It's that simple. Her religious views have no place in her governmental role, her governmental persona. She has a right to say insane, horrible things at her church as Sarah, but as Governor Palin, she has to shut her trap and abide by the law and Constitution. That means, no proselytizing and no calling the Iraq war a mission from God. No banning books in the library based on her personal views. No imposing religious myth and legend on science classes in school. No imposing religious views of fidelity and marriage on sex education. No using her own personal traditions to define what a "traditional" marriage is.

This is a very, very simple concept that most right-wingers, Christian right wingers in particular, just do not get. They ask, "If we can't use the Bible, our beliefs for our ethical code, then we are lost." Hm, I suggest you do what the Founding Fathers did - search your intellect, your reason, and you will find that ethics are self-evident. Did you take Philosophy 101 in college? Did you read your history books in high school? Secular ethics are possible, and far stronger than religious ethics because they do not rely on one's own personal convictions, merely reason, which can more easily be argued, discussed or refuted.

All in all, Palin is...disturbing at best. She clearly doesn't have much of an understanding of what America is or what it ought to be, and, in this super-charged nationalistic environment, should be enough to keep her out of office...

Knowles signs sexual assault bill

ANCHORAGE - Gov. Tony Knowles recently signed legislation protecting victims of sexual assault from being billed for tests to collect evidence of the crime, but one local police chief said the new law will further burden taxpayers.

The governor signed House Bill 270, sponsored by Rep. Eric Croft, D-Anchorage, outside the Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) exam room at Alaska Regional Hospital. In attendance at the signing were members of victims advocate groups, law enforcement agencies and legislators.

The new law makes it illegal for any law enforcement agency to bill victims or victims insurance companies for the costs of examinations that take place to collect evidence of a sexual assault or determine if a sexual assault did occur.

We would never bill the victim of a burglary for fingerprinting and photographing the crime scene, or for the cost of gathering other evidence, Knowles said. Nor should we bill rape victims just because the crime scene happens to be their bodies.

While the Alaska State Troopers and most municipal police agencies have covered the cost of exams, which cost between $300 to $1,200 apiece, the Wasilla police department DOES (my caps) charge the victims of sexual assault for the tests.

Wasilla Police Chief Charlie Fannon does not agree with the new legislation, saying the law will require the city and communities to come up with more funds to cover the costs of the forensic exams.

In the past weve charged the cost of exams to the victims insurance company when possible. I just dont want to see any more burden put on the taxpayer, Fannon said.

According to Fannon, the new law will cost the Wasilla Police Department approximately $5,000 to $14,000 a year to collect evidence for sexual assault cases.

Ultimately it is the criminal who should bear the burden of the added costs, Fannon said.

The forensic exam is just one part of the equation. Id like to see the courts make these people pay restitution for these things, Fannon said.

Fannon said he intends to include the cost of exams required to collect evidence in a restitution request as a part of a criminals sentencing.

Palmer police chief Laren Zager said that to his knowledge, no sexual assault victim has ever been billed by the city of Palmer for an exam to collect evidence of a crime. Zager, who has been police chief since January, said he would never expect a victim to be burdened with the cost of a police investigation.

Im prepared to pay every dime in an investigation. As long as I am chief, I would never bill a victim, Zager said.

The new bill would also make law enforcement agencies that are investigating a sexual assault responsible for the costs of testing victims for sexually transmitted diseases and emergency contraception.

At this point, with as much verifiable falsehood that's been floated about Governor Palin, I'm reluctant to believe anything I hear about her.

Actually ANON it was August 17th- which is pretty darn recent- and it wasn't her prayers- she got up on a stage, took a microphone in hand, and gave a publc discourse- and go on camera-

If she were a private citizen, it would still be reasonable to expect hr to take responsibility for her speech in a public forum-
but she is NOT- she is a public servant, in a public space.

Also, when a church allows political causes to be advocated in their space- they must change their tax status.
I wonder if her church took the legally and morally responisble and correct action to adjust their tax status.

Let's talk betting. The last poll numbers I saw showed them tied at 42%. Then there are the undecided people, so it could go either way. Yes I'm very concerned. Everyone is free to believe or not believe, but I am concerned when someone makes public policy for all based upon religious beliefs without a balance/alternative for those who don't have religious beliefs. I am concerned because I don't want to live in a Taliban like theocracy where I no longer have rights as an atheist. It's bad enough that the general religious public treats atheists with such contempt and distrust, which is unwarranted. What if the positions were reversed and religious people were treated with contempt, in the public venue? The religious would be up in arms about it, but atheists are supposed to sit down and shut up about it. The VP, for example has the ear of the President and can influence policy if the Pres listens to him or her. If the VP has the agenda of one particular group, policy could be implemented that reflected that bias that could effect others freedoms. For example, prayer in schools or christian religious symbols being put up on public property. Another example is school boards. If a board has a religious agenda, traditional science could be out and "intelligent design" (un-intelligent design) could be in.

Ms. Palin's comments certainly do not bother me as I believe in a soverign God who is in control of everything. We are doing a ladies' Bible study on how to know when God is talking to you and how to live your life where you have no idols, put God first in everything you do. She, like almost all Christians believes that God's hand is in every detail of life. You have to parse what she said accurately. She asked for prayer that the humans plans for the war be those of God's intention.

The Pipeline issue is a bit more complex. She beleives she has a divine call to her occupation as governor. Many Christians see their occupations as callings. She wants success in her calling to serve the interests of her state. If she were praying that her intention to funding a hospital would be the will of God, no-one would bat an eye.

I have no comment about Sara Palin personally, I just observe that when Obama selected Biden it was as someone already remarked (in the Wash. Post) bad casting because when Obama and Biden stand together it seems as if it is Biden running for the presidency (the visual aspect of things). The GOP understands such things (visuals) much more clearly than the democrats--the GOP has checked (as in chess) the democrats by selecting Palin. Regarding "Anonymous's" 13-point list of beliefs that "every Christian" shares with Sarah Palin . . .

Not so fast! If we were to poll a very large random sample of Americans who describe themselves as Christians, and if we were to de-satirize the 13 points, I think we'd find quite a few who would deny that they agree with at least 4 or 5 of the 13 points, just as many of these "Christians" would not concede that they believe in the 39 Articles of the Church of England.

Many self-described Christians take refuge (notice that I didn't say "cling to") a vague religiosity without necessarily believing in an omniscient god, in heaven and hell as physical places, in the Trinity, in the divinity of Jesus, or his physical resurrection (something that even St. Paul didn't necessarily believe in).

And probably majority (perhaps a slim majority) of self-described Christians don't REALLY believe in even the less controversial tenets of the Nicene Creed. They contrive or pretend to believe for complex social and emotional reasons, because if they ever believed, they feel too trapped, too scared, to guilty, or too embarrassed to admit that they never believed or no longer believe.

Despite all of Gov. Palin's speechifyin' about the power of prayer and hoping to do God's will, etc., none of us can really be sure whether Gov. Palin actually believes what she professes . . . unless she is prepared to drink poison, forego medical treatment for a ruptured aorta, or run into a hail of bullets because God told her to.

Are Sarah Palin's religious beliefs that much wackier than the norm? Here are beliefs that every Christian shares with Sarah Palin:

1. There's an invisible, supernatural entity out there that we call god

2. This god created the universe

3. This god is omnipotent

4. this god is omniscient

5. this god created man in his image

6. this god - like his creation - has wide-ranging emotions, just like a human

7. this god lives in a heaven where believers in him will spend eternity after they die

8. this god will condemn non-believers in him to everlasting torture and suffering

9. the beings that this perfect god created became so imperfect that this god had to incarnate himself as a human to redeem humans, and that he chose the avenue of birth by a virgin to do so

My comment does not center on today's topic, so much as it does on an interview I heard Ms. Quinn give today on Fox News.

I believe Ms. Quinn said that more serious investigation into Governor Palin's views, background, religious convictions, maternal responsibilities, etc. is warranted because John McCain "will probably die" during his first term.

Ms Quinn should look no further than her own living room to see that folks do sometimes live beyond 76 or even 80. Her own husband, Mr. Bradlee is, by my reckoning 87 years old (born 8/26/21)!

The GOP is making great headway in mitigating Palin's deficits. The complete absence of foreign policy experience will be more than compensated for by her ability to 'speak in tongues'... if they can train her how to do it without rhythmically waving her arms over her head, frenetically jiggling, gyrating and prancing in the aisles, and writhing ecstatically on the floor.

Regarding Sarah Palin, I have some solid disagreements with her, yet, unlike the democrats, these two - McCain and Palin - are saying that they will work with both sides. You really need to think before you write/speak. You can also just opt to SHUT UP! I do not know any women who would applaud what you have been doing. And to me, this is the worst part: It also makes all your other work suspect, because of your character and judgement in this matter regarding Sarah Palin. These qualities - character, judgement - are very important things for me to realize. Don Rickles - the phrase "lipstick on a pig" was used by John McCain earlier in the year to talk about Hillary Clinton's health care plan. He didn't seem to have a problem with the phrase then. Why is it that when Obama uses it in reference to McCain is it low-class? Just another example of McSame taking things out of context and getting offended by it. I find it hard to believe that this guy has been in politics for 30+ years if he has that much of a thin skin.

As for Miss Mooseburger and her church - people think that God interferes in everything from touchdowns to global warming. It makes no difference to me. I am always concerned about the religious views of politicians and candidates — it is too much to hope that they have none — and I am especially concerned if a politician or candidate appears intent to turn his or her religious views into public policies under which the rest of us must live.

On September 13, 1862, Abraham Lincoln read (or wrote) the following in the context of deciding whether to issue a proclamation emancipating the slaves:

“I am approached with the most opposite opinions and advice, and that by religious men, who are equally certain that they represent the Divine will.. I am sure that either the one or the other class is mistaken in that belief, and perhaps in some respects both. The foregoing from our first “Republican” President, who never claimed to know, with any confidence, what God’s will or plan was, and who never joined a church.

The problem with a politician, or anyone else, claiming to know that some policy is consistent with God’s will or God’s plan is that every “personal revelation” is just a feeling, an instance of self-deception or pious fantasy, and no personal revelation is superior or inferior to any other, unless it is tested against what Lincoln called “the plain physical facts of the case.” If the task of crafting sensible public policy is to “study the plain physical facts of the case, ascertain what is possible and learn what appears to be wise and right,” what value is added to the enterprise by invocations of or imprecations to a supernatural being? It seems to me that after most people pray, they go ahead and do what they would do if they hadn’t prayed and if they had no expectation of that prayer being answered.

Whenever any political candidate of any party or stripe starts talking about prayer and God’s will and God’s plan, I hear white noise, and I check to make sure my wallet is still in my pocket. I think I know what the candidate is trying to do — to push the buttons of the “faith ‘n’ values” crowd and motivate them to cast a vote on some almost reflexive, unthinking basis — but to me it’s all b.s., and it motivates me to cast a vote for the candidate who engages in this tactic with the least frequency.

McCain made one of his typical shoot-from-the-hip errors when he failed to vet this loon. Now, it's coming back to haunt him.

As the scary news about the REAL Sarah Palin piles up, the country is getting a good look at what John McCain would bring to the presidency, and it doesn't like what it's seeing.

Oh, sure, the rabid Republicans and Christians simply love Palin, but they have no choice. They were never going to vote for Obama, they were indifferent to McCain and they now have a loon out on the campaign trail whose nutty ideas match their own. They'll follow Palin over the cliff along with Teflon John.

The news media that loves a horse race hopes that this race becomes one, even as Obama looks to have an insurmountable lead in the Electoral College and even as the polls are swinging wildly from one candidate to another, often on the same day and often from the same polling source.

But even the media eventually tires of the personality wars. Unfortunately for McCain, realities on the ground continue to work against him, from the horrible unemployment numbers to the ever-sinking economy to the expanding debt to the fact that his VP pick is becoming a liability for him outside of every group that doesn't identify as a radical Republican.

ALL of this will be discussed in the debates, and the "I was a POW and she's a woman - vote for us because you feel sorry for us" meme won't substitute as a cogent answer away from the rabid Republican crowds on the campaign trail.
