The presidential primary season is about to begin. What should we be looking for in a presidential candidate? What do we need to know about the moral values and religious beliefs of a candidate?

I put less stock in formal religious profession than I do in spirituality (or the lack of it) when I evaluate a presidential candidate.

Character Counts First

From my perspective, moral values flow from one’s deepest personal convictions, which is why a candidate’s religious beliefs are relevant.

We should explore and know the moral values and religious beliefs of presidential candidates wherever they are key to their broader public moral sense and the decisions that they will make if elected.

We Need More Tell, Less Show

Fewer prayer breakfasts and more public discussion of moral issues with a faith dimension would suit my taste better- and give me less cause for concern that it is all for show.
