Mandatory celibacy comes with enormous problems. The Catholic Church did it for materialistic reasons. The priests who belonged to rich European families would leave all their wealth to the Church if they remained celibate, at least with no legal heirs.

When priests have sexual relationships in spite of a vow of celibacy, they make a mockery of their vow, make the Catholic Church a butt of non-Catholic jokes, make Catholics lose faith in their Church and the clergy. It would be much better for the Catholic priests to be allowed to marry, leaving celibacy an option for those who feel truly called to it.

As for sexual promiscuity and sexual abuse among the clergy, the rate is about the same among the lay, and among non-Catholic clergy. Married people abuse children sexually as much as celibate/non-celibate clergy do. Just because only a few cases get reported in the media about sexual abuse of children by total strangers or celibate Catholic priests, one should not conclude that all is well in families. With increasing divorce rates and children being exposed to "stranger" revolving door step-fathers, the rate of child sexual abuse is on the rise.
